Appearance: |
Ransom is an odd halfbreed of a halfling, though most at the Nidus have such little context for halflings that to them, he appears as a particularly short boy with particularly hairy feet.
At full adulthood, Ransom will stand about four feet tall. At present, he's only about half that. He has a lank mop of strawberry blonde hair that he keeps shorn in a bit of a mullet. Unlike his halfling father, Ransom shows absolutely no likelihood of putting on an ounce more fat than he's likely to use on any given day. He's got a light spattering of freckles over pale skin, and there is an odd little charm over his life that gives him a bit of a "charming little monster" where, without it, others might take him as being a little bit feral. |
Personality: |
Ransom is no orphan, not like those who came from Star City on the back of a terrible disaster... and yet there are many who grew up as such who recognize the after-effects of trauma in him. His mother is a vapid draconar--a dragon rider--and his father is an ex-pirate still battling with paranoia over being found by his past. That's left Ransom rather by himself, existing off of his connections with foster aunties and uncles who take pity on him.
Life in the Nidus isn't awful, generally, but it isn't perfect... and Ransom's childhood has been lately plagued by a bully that often shoves him around for his small size, who doesn't fall for his unusual charms, or perhaps focuses on Ransom exactly because he stands out just a little more than anyone else in their cohort.
Ransom has been begging to stand on the sands and bond a dragon since he was seven, partially to escape this bullying, but has been denied as being too young. He has fantasies that one day he'll become a powerful dragonrider whose bond will shred his bully to pieces, to the point that he's snuck into the hatching sands more than once after hours in an attempt to catch the youngling dragonets not yet hatched from the shell. Alas, none have chosen him.
Perhaps it's inherited halfling luck after all, part blessing and part curse for allowing him to get into terrible scrapes without properly succumbing to mistakes, but Ransom has overheard that several other candidates, most older than him, are being shipped out to other Weyrs to help bring genetic diversity to the Nidus. He did the same, sneaking off with a Capito to Shigan Weyr to bond.
Since Claravith found him, Ransom has had little time to worry about bullies. This is partially because the Decurio (or Weyrlingmaster) has kept him incredibly busy, and partially because Claravith has strategically found ways to occupy him and prevent his erstwhile bully from getting him alone anywhere. Ransom is grateful for that, and makes plans with his companion to fly to the highest nidulus once they graduate, where they can watch for trouble together and escape the common folk of the lower caverns. |
