Like his father, Horntail is rather reclusive. He avoids people when possible, seems uncomfortable in the presence of others, and is often taken to be shy due to his social avoidance. This is not entirely untrue, but it's not that others make him anxious directly -- it's much more a factor of his magic, and that being around life makes him so much more aware of death. As if compelled to, looking at the living makes him imagine alternatives that they might exist as instead: be it dead, undead, or some even more complicated variant. Anything that's not, strictly, alive.
As a result, he's not unwilling to manipulate others' views of him to his own ends. If thinking he's shy and timid gets them to give him more space, then all the better. He's not yet willing to find out what might happen if his imagination suddenly demanded to be worked into reality. Not yet.
