If there's one thing that Darkling is convinced she knows, it's that she's better than 90% of all the people around her. She was raised to think this way and it's stuck, this arrogance, but sometimes a person who can't be emotionally backed down from any challenge is just the person to have on your side. Her sense of superiority has also imparted on her one of responsibility, not in the sense of providing for others' every need, no, but at least as far as providing hand-outs and definitely in the sense of stepping in against threats she thinks they couldn't handle on their own.

Her name might come from the darkling beetle, but her behavior is decidedly very "wasplike" to some.
