Description: |
Scylla is, simply put, a sea serpent, though she is rather far from the serpent-dragon beast usually called to mind by the term. Thirty-six feet long and perhaps a foot-and-a-half wide at her thickest point, Scylla is more reminiscent of a giant eel. Her head is thick and rounded, and she is eyeless, instead sensing her surroundings via a pair of long, extremely sensitive barbels on her chin. These barbs give her a sense of smell even greater than a shark. Her bulbous head is also the perfect receptacle for her sonar, and every inch of her oily black skin is sensitive to temperature and vibration. Her gaping mouth has blue gums, a long blue tongue, and only a few teeth, most notably her gigantic canines. Given the fact that she swallows prey whole, however, the odd two dozen teeth she has are more than enough. Her pectoral fins are long and thin, and her dorsal and ventral fins extend from about a fifth of the way down her body, all the way to the end of her whippy tail. Long black spines support them, and the webbing itself is a slightly lighter version of her body color. |
Personality: |
It would be unfair to call Scylla an evil creature, though she is certainly not good-natured or benevolent -- she is simply unfettered by the heavy chains of conscience as only an uncivilized being can be. Unguided by things like right or wrong, her actions are directed only by one thing: the best interests of herself and her companions. Other living creatures fall into the categories of prey, enemies, and ignorables, and only her enemies are afforded any measure of respect. Scylla is very intelligent, if not wise, with the ability to learn and adapt with impressive alacrity. She is adept at ferreting out weaknesses and learning how to exploit them. She is curious in her own way, thoroughly investigating any new thing she discovers, but quickly loses interest once she reaches the point where she thinks she has learned all she can and has filed it into one of her three mental categories. She is definitely sentient, and communicates with a mind-to-mind touch better qualified as advanced telempathy rather than telepathy. Her relationship with Charybdis would be considered symbiosis rather than friendship: they are totally different species, but they are always together because their lives would be much harder without the other around. Though Charybdis essentially raised Scylla, she does not have the emotional development necessary to understand something like gratitude. Her fellow sea-beast is simply beneficial to have around, and thus to be protected and cared for. |
