Description:

As a bodiless poltergeist, Paulie can only be described as invisible and intangible. Though capable of manipulating his surroundings in extreme, he cannot himself be touched or otherwise detected by normal mortal senses. Though he can imitate any sound that he's heard before, he cannot truly speak on his own. Communicating phrases and full sentences is done by careful mimicry of words he's recently or frequently heard spoken, right down to emulation of the original speaker's voice. He does not enjoy this chaotic-sounding communication, however, so he prefers to limit himself to environmental sounds or a repeated word or two at most.

Having bonded a creature with the ability to see and describe him, his true appearance is now known he is a halfling and appears about twenty (which is still very young as far as halflings go!). He is round of face and feature, with bright blue eyes and a mop of very curly red-brown hair on his head, mirrored by the ruddy curls on the tops of his bare feet. He appears to be dressed in a loose white tunic, leather vest, and baggy brown slacks -- clothes which never change in appearance or state, given his spiritual nature.

Personality:

In movies and lore, the poltergeist is a spirit of malevolent and mischievous intent, capable of disrupting the lives of those it haunts to the point of mental trauma and actual physical harm. Paulie, as he has been dubbed by the Janidans, is nothing of the sort. He is bright and cheerful, and though he is certainly mischievous it is only in the innocent, playful manner of a young child with less than perfect behavior. Though he has startled and annoyed the family at times with his jokes, has never harmed the Janidans, and is in fact highly protective of them. The only thing he desires is the laughter of those around him.

Biography:

Janoch and Kajarni Janidan lived in their apartment for three years without any sign that they weren't alone in their small home, and the family that had had the suite before them had never reported any odd occurrences, either. It wasn't until after their daughter Tachza was born that strange things started happening. When they caught the little girl laughing as toys hovered over her crib, they thought perhaps she was a developing telekinetic. Testing, however, proved Tachza was utterly without psychic talents. No doctor could explain the phenomena that continued to occur around the girl, eventually spreading to affect areas throughout the house.

Though bewildered, the Janidans were more fascinated by the phenomena than frightened, for the occurrences proved to be quite helpful. Toys set out of reach would drift into Tachza's grasping hands if she began to whimper. If her nap was interrupted and she started to cry, the cradle would gently rock itself until she drifted off to sleep. If Kajarni had to change her daughter's diaper, invisible hands would take the soiled garment from the change table and deliver it to the trash for her.

When Tachza began to learn how to talk and her garbled half-words would be repeated to her out of thin air, the Janidans decided their apartment was haunted. As if pleased to be recognized, the phenomena around their home increased and little jokes started to mix in with the helpful occurrences. At dinnertime, a spoon might scoot out of the way as it was reached for. Janoch might finish tying his shoes only to sit back and watch them be untied again. Little objects would vanish from where they had been left and replaced in a different, though obvious, location. Tiny hands tugged playfully at their hair and clothes, and sounds like a kitten's mewl or chirping bird would greet the Janidans as they moved from one room to another. Sometimes the jokes were a nuisance, but their ghost would stop if chastised -- at least for a while.

Eventually a family friend suggested the term 'poltergeist' to them, but little Tachza didn't like the big word so she took the first syllable of it and turned it into "Paulie." Thus the apartment's fourth inhabitant became Paulie Poltergeist, and as much a part of the family as if he were flesh and blood like the rest of them.

The Janidans do not know where Paulie came from, and neither does Paulie himself. With careful mimicked-word answers, he has been able to communicate that he is a boy, but knows nothing more than that. He remembers nothing before the Janidans came into the house, and before his bonded and Myithat identified him, he did not even know what species he was, nor does he even know if he ever had a name other than Paulie. He also, however, doesn't really care. He is happy as he is, sharing the apartment with the Janidans, and has no desire for anything else.
