Young Etek is nothing out of the ordinary when it comes to your typical Atuan native. The harsh desert climate of her homeworld has already weathered her skin and tanned it under her lifetime in the sun. She is a fairly small child, but hardy, and takes the often-trying task of living on a desert planet completely in stride, since it is, after all, the only thing she's ever known. Her hair is a dark, woody brown, falling to her back and bound into dozens of tight-woven braids, which are in turn bound together with twine, like a ponytail. Since she's too proud of her long hair to cut it off, binding it as such is the second-best way to keep it out of her ink-black eyes as she goes about her daily duties.

Like any proper desert-dweller, she dresses in layers to keep in moisture, but in pale colors so as to reflect sunlight and keep cooler. She prefers wearing long-sleeve shirts and full-length pants in pale grey-green colors, but always has a sun-faded orange bandanna tied around her neck. It might clash, but she adores that little bit of cloth, and has never been persuaded to part with it.

The desert life might not be easy, but it certainly hasn't had an adverse effect on the bundle of cheer that is this young girl. Optimistic and frequently smiling, Etek rarely suffers a bad mood, and bounces back from sadness and disappointment with impressive ease. She is not, however, a bouncy child. Though cheerful, she is restrained, and doesn't get loud or hyper like many children tend to do when excited. She is possessed of a great deal of common sense and is unusually perceptive, since the time she spends watching and observing is the time other children waste caught up in their own enthusiasm.

Though she is a hard worker and never lets her chores go undone, Etek is prone to daydreaming. Ever since her older brother Ineju bonded his dragon Siebel and became a Nexus-roaming messenger, Etek has imagined what it would be like to live a similar lifestyle. Hers, however, is not the dream of a child that wants to be a dragonrider simply for the sake of having one's own dragon. She likes working hard and doing a job well done, but would like a more entertaining career than living on the harsh desert world of Atu and fighting to raise crops in Kraul's magical greenhouses. She went along with Ineju on one of his message-runs once, and getting to see worlds beyond the dry sands of Atu was without a doubt the best experience of her young life. She has never voiced this desire to anyone, since she's reasonable enough to know she is neither the first nor the last child in existence to have such a fantasy.

When Ineju whisked her off to stand at the Summer of Flames Frenzy, and she bonded not once, but twice, it was more than a dream come true: it was a gift she'd never thought she'd know.
