My excuse is that I just.. don't adopt >_> I mean sure, I'll enter the occasional draw and I absolutely love seeing all the dragons and reading the stories, but I haven't submitted a character to anything for four or five years now. I got tired of paging, and story-writing, and of being all jealous and covetous, and.. well, I have my reasons, but it's just not something that interests me anymore.

I didn't think this was a problem, since I love adopting out to other people, and I quite enjoy the community here. But if, as a member of the community, I'm expected to write candidates and characters to send to other people.. then I dunno.

With the Enkeyn I'd thought I've been giving to the community, but in actuality I guess I'm only taking - people send candidates to me and I never send them any in return. Should I be making an effort to do something which I no longer enjoy so that I am giving back to the community?

Well... my opinion is that it would be really nice if you could send out candidates... but that no one is going to boot you out of here or anything if you don't.

Heck... if you don't like writing, you could just make stats sheets... or even sponsor from clutches. That is pretty much the same level of effort as giveaways... or at least not as much effort as writing a candie story.

That's how I feel--why do something I don't enjoy? I've gotten rather picky who I adopt from, and if it's in my interest to write up something. I have been forcing myself to write stuff.

If being a part of this community means that everyone has to send out something and participate, I'd rather not be a part of it--and to me, sending sponsers takes up just as much time as sending a canidate, they just don't bond.

I think what the issue here is is that our newer members who we're delighted to have here didn't come because they like to write or even /want to/. We don't want to discourage them from participating just because they're not just like the rest of us, do we?

I honestly don't remember the last candidate I actually managed to finish, actually, wait, I do, and they were all for Dray's OABP. I can't stand spending hours working on the perfect story and waiting so freaking long for the clutch to hatch that I don't even care about the character or their dragon by the time they bond. So I send my candidates (when I actually manage to complete them) to places like the OABP and AD because I know I'll recieve a dragon in a reasonable amount of time and I'm more likely to still be interested in the character when I get the dragon.

But I'm working a ton, and taking classes, and trying to be on a game design team. I don't honestly have time for any of this. Giveaways offer me the chance to remain active in the Nexus, still collect and give out the dragons I love. If I can't do that, what point is there in me busting my butt to stay here when I have so much else trying to keep my attention?

I don't want anyone to feel bad here, I'm not trying to attack anyone personally, but the Nexus cannot be black and white when there's so much gray in our world...and blue and gold, and fuzzy and smooth, and horns and feathers and.....get the picture? We're a diverse group, why can't our mode of adopting be just as diverse?

>.< I'm going to shut up now before I'm run away by my messed up feelings...maybe I should just take a break and get over my break up before I open my mouth in here again...

Well... the issue isn't who likes what... it really comes down to getting support for some of the clutch-based adoption agencies out there that have been getting ignored lately.

Hmmm... I remember that Sapphire or someone used to have a clutch database of all the clutches available in the dragoning world in those days. How about starting one of those, complete with links and parentage and such? I know that would help me in figuring out who needs candidates and it would help to organize things a little bit...

And if people got more candidates then the clutches wouldn't take so long to hatch... ^^; Which leads to a vicious cycle when interest drops...People don't want to send candies to clutches that never hatch that can't hatch because people don't send candies...

Deadlines. People are more apt to send in stuff when they know they can't get away with putting it off forever.

And sometimes we just can't send in something for a certain clutch. your current one, Sherra, would not fit into Lanse'shri..I have no real tech areas, and therefor no tech-based canidates.

That is fine... Quite honestly, I'm not too worried about my clutch. When I get bored of having a clutch on my sands I slap deadlines down, but I have enough other dragon-y stuff to do that I don't mind it sitting. I was thinking more of the newer agencies, and some of the older ones that the newer folks here don't know as much about. It just makes me kinda sad when I see people imploring for candidates when the Nexus is so bustling with activity...

I wonder what would happen if people hosted their own giveaways instead of using the Nexus board; similar to how Myrror gives away creatures using a form, or Kitsuneko adopts out Rukels (or Phe with her Terigon eggs?)

For one thing, it would take the emphasis off of that whole feeling of "I have to check the board to get in on the latest giveaway!", which means that people would feel less stressed about dragoning altogether (face it, for all that they're just gif or png images, collectables like marbles or cards or pokemon or whatever, we still get emotional about them! XD They're characters, they need someone to angst over them!), and perhaps force less people to get into "damnit, I need a break" mood-sets.

For another, it would prove advertisement for the bonding-proper sort of place. Now... a drawback could be that "Well, if I'm hosting it from my own site, why don't I just run it as a usual clutch?" And that's probably a good point... but this way, if a person wants to run a clutch, they have more options then the 'sit and wait' variety. Heck, put out enough giveaways, keep your rules and expectations fairly lax, and you may get some of those giveaways back as candidates! (I know I love seeing my dragons come back to me in any form, especially fleshed out!).

Another problem could be that of who hosts the clutch, if multiple owners of parents are involved. That, I think, is something that would have to be worked out between the owner(s) and artist(s?). Giveaways of late seem similar to less-hastley flights: The owners submit their dragons, the artist's draw the babies and sometimes give them out, or the owners do... like I said, you'd have to talk it out amongst yourselves.

Lastly, hosting a giveaway clutch at your own site can be more work then slapping it up here. No question about that. I don't think we should abolish said giveaways on the board, but putting that extra bit of effort into hosting them at your own site and posting advertisment about them will let people know that you're more committed. o_o I assume that after they sign up for the giveaway, some of them will wander around a little and see what else you have to offer (like I said before) so in the end, it seems like a more proactive way to run the dang things.

XD I've rambled on enough... but yeah. So long and short of it: you don't have to take breaks, but think about hosting your giveaways at your own sites instead of on the board, and just advertise their presence, here. Take the heat off of dragoning and give people more of a chance to write candidates by not being intimidated by the mass amount of pretties going out, here!

*takes a deep breath*

Sorry for spamming. XD

Ooooh, Dray, that is a really good idea. It would help include the people like Trix who don't use this board more too.

*ponder ponder* If I do any more giveaways anytime soon I might have to try hosting 'em at Cy just to see what happens...

*blinks* Wow... there are cobwebs down here...

(ends on a completely unrelated note then goes back to writing a Flurry candidate! XD)

Actually this might be a great idea. :)

A list of sites which need candidates (for any number of clutches, doesn't matter), would be a good place to start. People could set a goal - doesn't have to be a big goal, just *a* goal, of "I'm going to write 3 candidates" "I'll send one candidate each to these 5 clutches" "I'll write a big group and send them to a dozen clutches".

I would think that the agencies would then need to take the reserves, but the reserve date would then trigger the hatching come hell or high water. :) A lot of clutches out there have indeed been waiting a long time to hatch. That's why I suggest *doing candidates*. It's like complaining about how a law passed or how a person got elected if they didn't vote. It's not fair saying, "but they just sit there" if you don't send any candidates out - because it might be *your* candidate that fills that clutch. Five other people could be doing the same thing, waiting for someone *else* to fill a clutch.

Just send out something, if you *want* to. I'm not now nor have I ever said, "everyone MUST" do any of this. Myrror, Sky, I know you don't like to write candidates. Don't participate then, we love your critters the way they are and will gobble them up whenever you send them out to us.

One compelling reason I just realized about why we *should* continue to do standard clutches, is that the breeding generations of dragon images has gotten way beyond any plotline based storylines that some agencies relied upon to guide their own candidates. How many years have passed for some dragons, they're sent off to breed and breed again, their grandoffspring are breeding... But their original riders are still just sitting there... Waiting for a plot to happen or a hatching to occur that would have taken place "years ago" in THEIR time line.

It's confusing when you've got a candidate-earned dragon, flying at a site and waiting for suitors, who all come from 17 generations later... :) How lonely those girls must feel eh? :D

I'm just saying, it'd be a good thing to post clutch needs, fill those clutches up, and start new. Deadlines are good things, but they're hard to keep when no one even tries to send candidates. :D

List of clutches needing candies someplace might be nice. I know I usually only frequent a few places, and forget about the others, cuz I don't have links handy for 'em, or don't know what's there, or whatnot o.o

Shard has a point, too : P S'one reason I haven't put any chars into the breedables database yet (there are several, one of which just being laziness XD ). But so many of my chars have plot tied to 'em, so I can't have them randomly breeding all over the place! XD

Anyway. That's my two cents: list of clutches, necessity of plots tied to breedings at times o.o Says the girl who never does giveaways, doesn't give out dragons, and pretty much only does candidates... heh....

Well I can say for sure that I keep the Destiny to deadlines exactly because I know I hate seeing my candidates sit for aeons at other sites, even when the clutch is full! And similarly, as of late I've only sent candidates out to places that had definite deadlines of their own. Maybe more folks should adopt a deadline stance?

And I really like Dray's idea with doing giveaways from one's site-- I think I'll do that myself. :)

And for the record, I love giveaways too and keep participating in them by choice... I think the real "problem" here is finding that line of balance between giveaways and real clutches. :P

My problem is that I just don't feel like writing. I'm okay with doing stats, but when I get to the actual story, I just get nowhere. Consequently, most of my 'quality' candidates take months (sometimes years!) for me to actually finish.
Lately, I've just been wanting to draw, so I really like the giveaways, cause it gives me an excuse to draw without the hassle of running a traditional clutch.
Darkling Dawn: Fauna Frenzy Open to candidates; flights open to males/females; rukel eggs/breedings available.
Drockh-Tallahn Castle: 3 eggs, 2 available. Females and males needed.
Sgiath Wolfkeep: 7 pups available
Sedona Weyr: 12 eggs, Deadline March 8. Chasers and a female needed.

Hey, just a weird thought based on Kit's last post...

Stat pages are considered acceptable as sponsorships go for most places, including numbers of my own, but they do get kinda dry.

What about setting up a thread with adoptable stat sheets that people can claim if they're inspired to use for a more full candidate? Any kind of stats would probably be acceptable, I know I've got my own which I used for the A/B giveaway, but there are others which have more or less info on them. Something like 'gender, age, background or origin' up to 'no gender, no species, but what if they were a bartering mage on a rampage after their cousin was murdered'...

Then if suitably inspired, someone else could supply the rest of the info and send out the candidate or fit them into a bigger story. Any ideas?

Yes! Yes! That sounds awesome, Shard. Actually, I've had a similar idea running through my head for a couple months now, so... good idea. :)

'Nother idea - what about a candidate exchange, run sorta like the dragon exchange? Form would look something like:

Your name
Your e-mail
Whether you'll be doing a stat sheet or story or both

Site candidate will be for
Any pertinent requirements
Dragon species applying for
Clutch applying for
Preferred candidate gender
Ideas/Theme

So, you'd write up a candidate to /send/ to the site of the person you go, and someone will write one to send to you. Sound interesting, or no?

This is probably going to be kind of long, but... my opinions:

I seem to recall (not sure, I have a mind like a sieve as you probably all have noticed) that when I first joined back in August, everyone was shuffling about saying that there was going to be a "break" from something. I THINK it was giveaways so that people could catch up on everything/writing/etc., and I seem to recall that I felt extremely unhappy that everyone seemed to be taking a break right when I joined >_> But then, the break didn't happen, at least not really. So, uh, the point of all that is, I think taking/enforcing a month-long giveaways break might be really, really bad... it would certainly cause some peoples' interest in the whole thing to wither, perhaps die entirely. I know I, myself, would go "bleh" and never get around to submitting my Schatties to the breeding database even after the break was over. That probably sounds really harsh and bad :/ I don't mean to sound snappy, but that's how I feel about it.

And this is also something ridiculous, but here goes. Anyone who's looked at my Nexus profile has probably seen that I want to be an author... I want it to be my career in life, and I'm working really hard at it. So it's like... almost everything I write these days has been with the intent to publish, make a living, finally realize my goal. So, in some ways, I have absolutely no inspiration/urgings to write candidate-stories. I know it sounds selfish, but it's not because I'm not going to make money from them (I haven't made any money with my published short stories yet, hehe). It's just that... I don't know exactly, sometimes I just can't get ideas for them because my brain is so full with my novels' characters or working out a problem I found in a rewrite, that I just can't write for candidates. Anything I do write comes out feeling hokey, forced, stupid, and Mary Sue-ed. So, stat-page giveaways are an incredible relief to me - and yet I feel bad at the same time, for not putting any effort into something and getting a dragon in return, kind of the opposite of what Skysong is feeling. Plus, the characters I make up for bonding just DON'T feel like complete characters to me for some reason. My novels' characters have been living in my head for so long that they're completely fleshed-out. They have histories, futures, opinions, food preferences, and I KNOW them all. My candidate-characters? They're strangers to me. And Mary Sues. ::tears out her hair:: The characters I send to Phe are an exception because I know exactly where they're going, to the Abstract Destiny, and I know exactly what kind of critter they're going to be hoping to bond or sponsor, so I can focus their stories towards that.

And as for Shard's idea, that's probably a great one to help inspire people to write! Sometimes all you need is an outside idea to spark your own. I myself would have a hard time with it... I have a hard enough time writing lines for Dr. Schroeder when my characters go to the Abstract Destiny because I feel like I'm "stealing" someone else's characters and using them for a mouthpiece or puppet XD I just have issues using other peoples' characters/ideas sometimes because I know how hard I work on the ones in my novels. I'd probably get pissy if someone took my snotty little fuzzball princess and stuck her in a story and started writing lines for her :/ I dunno. I probably won't participate in it - I just don't like the concept behind it - but that's just me.

And I think DEADLINES R GRATE! XD More people should have deadlines. I work SO much better with a deadline. I know some people have wonky schedules and can't finish said clutches at said deadline, but it seems overall if you're the kind of person that makes the images early on and then waits for candidates, deadlines are the way to go.

Overall I don't know what to say about what to do about clutches that don't get filled. I have some Schattarneki ladies out there who might have behbies in their future, but no one's applying to the clutches, so I'm sad :/ But I, myself, don't apply to some clutches because I just don't have the interest in them for one reason or another. I think we should have a Sticky, or perhaps even a seperate board within the forum entirely, just for people listing their "regular" clutches and their requirements, themes, deadlines or whatnot.

Wow, I go away for five minutes, and a debate springs up!

I also feel that the real clutches have been ignored of late, but I hate how people wait forever to bond at real clutches and the characters stop being interesting by the time they bond. That happened to two of my characters, who are more or less canon characters in my story, who waited and waited and never bonded (one finally did, the other still hasn't) and I had to write stories about other characters involving them sort of pretending that they were still on Cyrna when they werent really and skirting around technical details like no other. I really like the deadline thing of the AD, and the bond-as-you-go feel of the OABP. These things encourage candidate writing, because stories get better dragons, but don't make you wait forever and a day. I see nothing wrong with this, and think it's the "wave of the future" in dragoning, as it were. I am planning on re-opening World of Cyrna adoptions soon ... very soon, as soon as I'm done with the page ... and I THINK I'm going to run it like the OABP and the MFF and others, because it seems to be the most efficient way of doing things. I'd do it deadline based, but then I'd be afraid that I wouldn't get ANY candidates, because, well, I'm not as talented as Phe XD.

I personally would be very sad to see this forum go to straight giveaways and see the writing aspect die out because I for one am about a gazillion times better at writing than I am at drawing. Some people, like Sky and Myrror, are better at drawing, or at least prefer it. Ain't diversity fun? There's nothing wrong with having a community of both artists AND writers, and I'd be very sad to see people leave just because they think they're obligated to write 400 page novels in order to get a dragon.

There is room for candidate-sending clutches, and giveaway-sponsor clutches in this world, and everyone needs to see that. However, progress always wins out over stagnation, and I think the bond-as-you-go and deadline methods are far superior to the limited-number-of-eggs-wait-forever method, and will eventually replace traditional clutches altogether. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

And those, friends, are my two copper pieces :)

Okays - to stop the derailment of this poor thread... :)

In the CANDIATES AND CLUTCHES forum, I've stickied two threads:

Clutch needs, and Candidate-shell donations! Both should be pretty self-obvious, they've got instructions. :)

Okay, back to the normally scheduled banter!

Just a little thought- I really like using giveaway critters as candidate fodder, either as a companion, roommate, pet, archrival, or candidate itself.

That is all.

^^ Yup I agree, which is why I would never say stop them entirely. Two of the giveaways/draws I've got (Mor Zamk and Mikkimak) make such a great pair of troublemakers I plan on writing them up with stuff in the future. It *is* nice to try for something that's 'just right' but I still love the allure of not quite knowing what you're going to get based on what info you've given.

I haven't even began my Luera/Ghaniya babies yet... I'm a bit daunted by the number of appendages...

Can't wait to see those Luera/Sera'Jocosa babies though... I'm not sure whether to be enthusiastic or terrified.

Actually, I have a friend who finds Luera creepy... I'll have lots of fun terrorising her with Luera's offspring...

Mercale, also known as Phoenix, coincidentally enough, still insists that any pairing of Luera and Sera'Jocosa is unnatural and wrong.

Or, at least, that's how I'll interpret "I'm still right" as...

Personally, I can;t wait to see these mutli-appendaged babies. There can never be too many appendages.
