Okay I don't know how this topic got started but if we're trashing the educational system let me join :P

My room mate's mom is a teacher and I feel your pain. It seems like the education system has TOTALLY gone to crap, even since I was in elementary and middle school, which doesn't feel like so terribly long ago. My room mate's mom is saying that they don't even have honors math classes anymore because they don't want the less intelligent kids to have their feelings hurt by being in a lower math class. Okay, WTF. I was in remedial math in the third grade when all my friends were in honors and I should say I turned out okay. Honors math was, dorktastic as it sounds, a goal to strive for. I was in remedial math in the third grade, then I moved to average, and then I was in above average for three more years before I finally made honors in the 8th grade (which contrary to my thread in art and writing, was a very long time ago ) and I wouldn't call myself traumatized by the experience! I wasn't OFFENDED by being in remedial math in the third grade, I took it as a SIGN that my math skills sucked and needed improving! And I might interject that I was a VERY easily offended child. But the teachers didn't cater to my easily offendedness. They left me to deal with it. And I say I turned out all right. Any kid that's going to be traumatized for life because they're not in honors math has bigger problems than their math skills. And if all the kids are in the same class regardless of their skills that means that they have to cater to the lowest denominator, meaning that the bright kids will be bored out of their f'ing skulls! And people wonder why other countries are starting to get ahead of us in science and technology ... well DUR, it doesn't take a Chinese Rocket Scientist to figure that one out

*raises hand in agreement on the 'bored out of their minds' part* Being smart makes it harder than people think. Despite all the things I do here with art and writing, I'm honestly more of a mathematician and scientist than anything (heck, I'm currently taking two science courses, college level calc, and talking about taking independant study in programming), and I've always been that way.

... I also currently don't do homework because, hey, what's the point when I can just sit in class, doodle in my notebooks and such while taking notes, do no homework, and still get every single question on the tests, even the harder bonus problems, right? And I'm hurting myself and I know it - I'm struggling a bit with some of the concepts in Calc because I didn't do the homework way back when and so I don't quite know how to do things now.

It's pretty bad when I can pay absolutely no attention in class, be asked a random question, and know the answer where other people are completely lost even with paying attention and doing the work.

This is why so many of our brightest kids are turning into drop outs and school-skippers - what's the point of wasting over 6 hours of your day stuck in classes that teach you nothing and are boring to boot? ("Okay kids, turn to page 263, read the section, and answer questions 1 through 20" *two minutes later, all the smart kids are done, while others spend the rest of the period on it*)

... That's my two cents. *coughs* Maybe we should return this thread to Shard? ^^;;

Schools are never good though, are they? Right now, I attend an international school thats supposed to be one of the best in Singapore, but it's crap. You pay about 15,000 ++ per year, and the school is constantly upgrading itself.

I don't get it. If your school "upgrades" itself, but never asks if this is what the current student body/parents want, and then make it compulsory for you to pay for it...

Plus, UWCSEA is supposed to be known for being nice. you know, social services, global concerns etc. It's a bunch of hypocritical bullshit where two of my friends (IB students) were pulled out of class because their parents could't pay for one term. They were late.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have things up and front, even if its bad than have people jump around like this...

*ahem*

sorry. had to give my two cents.

Wow.... Yeah the problems that we're mostly dealing with are in free, public schools in America, but it doesn't surprise me (much) to hear that pay schools are also having problems... :(

and your friend's problems for paying late sound like a desperation tactic to keep 'only the highest grade scorers' in the school - to look really good on paper. blah.

a little bit inappropriate, but i was thinking 'you know what, if we had the resources, advisors etc, we'd make a better school!'

and of course. it led to thoughts of...

well. some particular characters attempting to run a school together. XD

That sucks Sunny I'm sorry :(

Yeah it's definitely not limited to public schools ... I can bitch about the public high school I went to all I want but it was a gleaming utopia compared to the catholic school I went to for a year and a half *anime sweatdrop* They actually closed down a few years after I left, great service for humanity, that. It wasn't the religious thing, surprisingly. I didn't mind having to pray before class or whatever because I thought it might help me do better on whatever tests I had coming up  ... but it was just the school itself that was so moronic. For being an institute of education, they sure delighted in keeping us ignorant. Every once in awhile a student, or even a teacher, would just not show up anymore, and whenever a student asked what happened to them, the teachers and admins would pretty much tell us it was none of our business. When the planes hit the world trade center four years ago, we didn't even know about it until until like 5 hours later. I kid you not, it happened at about 8 am, and we just went about our business doing normal school work until about 12 when the information leaked via extremely exaggerated rumors. Finally in our afternoon chemistry class when our teacher failed to hold our attention talking about lyme disease did the principal go on the PA system and tell us we could all go home. Their excuse was because nobody could take the train at the normal time 'cause there were no trains (yeah, we lived in the subburbs of new york, and we were probably the last to know about it. come on). Anyway I'm getting grossly off topic from the already off topic post, but hey ... bitching about school is FUN!

Yeah! :) That was the idea. She's everywhere. Well, within a certain area and don't try starting up complicated conversations with her dupes. :) hee.
