As a youth, Kelso was a jerk. He disliked most folks, being told what to do, being woken up early... but generally he had a grouchy attitude about everything. He used to hide behind whip-sharp sarcasm and a sense of humour (and generally that is still the case, though he's not cruel now), and it wasn't hard to tell when he's unhappy.
The same can be said now as when he was a boy. When he is happy, it's quite clear. Kelso loves working with machines, and there are precious few of those at Nidus Descendi. He clings to mechanical workings as a link to his past, when he was evacuated from Star City and separated from his family. As far as he knows, he's the last surviving member of the Ternigan's, and his father and mother were both skilled maintenance workers and valued members of their guild back on the station. So, though he was very young at the time, Kelso has taken it upon himself to follow in those footsteps. It's been a curse having to rely on others to learn more about how to do his work better, and he is conflicted with watching holovids that show more about the life that was stripped from him when he had to evacuate.
Beneath that, he longed to have a dragon bond, only he was uninterested in spending the rest of his life flying patrols and risking his life fighting hydras and acid-blooded monsters. He still has a lot of grieving to do, though he won't admit to that, even to himself. It was this longing that caused him not to turn down the invitation to Xanadu Weyr.
Since being bundled off to help the Weyr ensure they had sufficient candidates for an experimental clutch, Kelso's life has become very different. He didn't expect to bond. He didn't want to bond. He'd purposefully put himself on the outside of the group so that the hatchlings would have a harder time finding him. Yet still, Siurinth came unwaveringly his way and instantly Kelso's mind felt at ease. The moment of bonding was like being swaddled in a warm blanket, with Kelso's anxieties and deeper woes temporarily falling away in the face of a euphoric connection.
Since bonding, he hasn't exactly changed, but Siurinth has a way of reminding Kelso when he is lashing out in such a way that he's become... mellow. He can work past his snap conclusions to ask people for help, both in learning about his past and in deepening his understanding of technological workings. He's shaping up to join the Engineers Corps, though he and Siurinth seem to be on very different paths.
Kelso doesn't mind this; his bond is excited to dive deep into mental healing and has independantly entrenched himself amongst the medics of the Nidus and Kelso... he has more quiet time to work on his gadgets and process his inner heart's thoughts.
