Aestyru's spine and wingsails are living plant matter and provide him with energy via photosynthesis, but he needs to consume meat as well.

Aestyru has a rather bad mix of traits going for him: he's hyperactive and he's a klutz. He's easily excitable and likes to romp and play around, but he also has six left feet and is constantly blundering into people and things. When he was very young he was forbidden from evening going near fragile structures, for fear he'd trip and fall onto one of them and bring the whole thing down. Aestyru was very much aware of his ineptness and was apologetic to the point of upset and embarrassed tears, for it seemed that no matter how hard he tried, he was totally unable to train himself into any kind of dexterity.

Thankfully though that all sits in the past now, for the Nidus's agriculture can very much benefit from abilities like Aestyru's, and keeping him away from the crops would have been a waste of his talents. He's learned to move slowly, placing all six feet with careful deliberation, and then standing very, very still once he's gotten where he needs to be.
