*rolls eyes* So it'll be down for a bit longer - site5 is apparently grumpy about live chat on their servers, so I'm hacking some code together so that it's on my silveredmagic account but still embedded as part of the forum.

It will be easily accessible again soon, I just need to wait for my hosting service to move my account to a newer server so I have access to the newer version of php.

I was going to inquire about setting up some basic php for falas...right now I'm thinking more like the wings and records. (will ask more when shes home from graduation and can use her laptop and not kindle...)

heh, kindle fire, not the original kindle. And yeah, its neat but they key pad is touch screen so it takes much longer to type anything...heh.

Mostly, I just want to know (or to know if what I want to do with Falas/my sites), is even possible. It sounds simple in my head but I'm sure it's not and I'm no PHP literate person. I know what it does, how it works, and that if one TINY thing is wrong in the code, it's little PHP-happy world blows up and the world ends...to put it lightly.

For now, I would like to start using PHP to create (and to later manage more easily), my wings. I have a spreedsheet started (that can easily be simplifed), in excel that lists all my riders. (It also tallies genders, color class, size class, and genetic class for me so I dun have to! Yes, I'm very proud of myself). Eventually, I want some kine of niffty onsite thing where I can go to 'Manage Wings' type thing and add/move/delete riders to my hearts little content *daydreams*. Until then, I'll settle for managing it in a spreedsheet format that the internet kindly transfers into a wing page for me.

How hard (and easy though I'm sure its more complicated (to me) than it sounds) would that be? Eventually, I want records and rider pages generated this way, too, with *daydreams* a control panel to make my life simplier... One step at a time...(i keep telling myself that at least...)

Here's the short answer: A spreadsheet is a database - at least when it comes to data storage (you can't do the formulas in-column the way you can in a spreadsheet, but for data storage they're mostly the same.)

Here's the long answer: ... a spreadsheet is a database, but data entry requires its own bit of wok, just like how I'm doing work to enter stuff into the nexus database. Truthfully, though, once I've finished the work for the Nexus, a lot of that can just be reused for what you want. Soooo... if you want me to do the work for you, just let me finish the Nexus work and then I'll get yours up and running. Of course, if you'd like to trade a bit of front-end work for my site, I'd like that very much. =P

In other news! Got my site moved to a new server, expect the chat back up around the new year! *thumbs up*

Star, I have always wondered this...

I like having colors on my site...i don't know about some of the others but it helps draw attention and make a quick visual reference to the colors of a dragon. So I like to color code my colors on the website.

Is there a "simple" way of doing that within a database/PHP set up? I have a feeling it's actually complicated but I dunno, have a program/file/thing/whatever that will search on a page and find (in certain areas of the page...obviously on a story I don't want the colors there), to find "green" and tell it to make that text a color? *blinks* Like I said, I don't really know the limits of PHP and stuff and will live if I must never have pretty colors on my website...but, I have to ask.

Yakima: *scratches head* Uhm.. Well. I'd have to say, off hand, that my immediate thought is something along the lines of fake-tags. For example, something like @green@This text should be green@/green@, at which point as the page is being built, the php would search for all instances of @, try to match what follows against a list of colors that you supplied at some point, then replace that with some piece of html that would force it to change color, whether that be a font-color: tag or a span class= doesn't matter. ... Or have the fake-tags be something like GREEN This text should be green NGREEN, at which point you look for a string of all capital letters... honestly, though, it's all going to boil back down to html or css stylings.

I was just wondering because if i have some/most of that information coming from a database, do i have to put the font color code into the database to get it to show up? *blinks* That is why I was wondering.

Uhm... ... I think, for the most part, if you have html code in the database, it'll display properly when output to the browser.
