Games like Whiterock Weyr?

Post by Dray »

Hey guys! I was just wondering... do any of you know of any games that run similar to Kitsuneko's Whiterock Weyr? I'm having a brain-fart and can't think of any, and a friend emailed me to ask! If you know of any that are similar, I'd love a link to 'em so I can pass them on!

I'd love to know that, myself, though I don't think I found any...hence, why Whiterock exists... :D

Well, I don't know any, but I have thought about making something like that for Treval Dragonry and the Ortari. :P *blinks* But I would probably get overwhelmed with that one. Heh.

Aaaand, another thought, was that Nexus battle-thingy with you and Kendarath ever going anywhere, now that school's almost over and everything?

I had set it aside, since Phe mentioned that it would be load of work. XD I just snagged a day-job so I may very well have even less time than I do now. Or... did... then. X3

Rats, that's too bad then! I'll forward the info, anyhow!

Truthfully, I would love to try one based in Anar, maybe not Treval Dragonry but one of the other Dragonries and see how it works out. That way nothing interferes with the plotness...perhaps set it back in time for all I know/care, too. :P Anar is based off D&D anyway. :P

I don't know, I'll ponder it. I have the images now so it wouldn't be that bad...

Thank you for asking here Dray!

I'm really a mostly a lurker here on these forums, but I found the mechanics to Whiterock Weyr really fascinating. It is just casual enough I can fit it into my schedule, so I really enjoy how it is being played out.

From that I was curious of other "non-games" (casual, but point based with consequences) styled online games out there. The only thing I can think of is the more choose-your-own akin to Ruby Quest, though that is still leagues apart.

Thank you guys for responding though! I'm still sniffing around to see how others have handled similar games in the past. It is fun stuff. :D

Last night I had a dream that you posted here saying that you spoke with Ahkahna, and she had found a whole bunch of them for some reason. XD When I woke up and saw you post I had thought that I had a crazy prophetic dream (of something so random and mundane!) and it made me laugh.

Sorry about not being able to find anything, though! I guess it just means that there's a big niche to fill out there in LJ land! >:D

Oh my gosh Dray, how weird and awesome!

Though I don't speak to Ahkana very often, I did spend half the night wandering the internet looking for similar style games to glean information from (not finding much of anything). I may just have something up my sleeve finally, bwah ah ha.

(I'm gonna email you a link! >:D)

I guess psypets.net is casual, but points-based with consequences- Though you get over a certain number of pets and it turns into a resource hoarding/maintaining game which is probably more tedious than what you're looking for.

Agreed! When I came back to the game after a long time I had to spend about three hours preparing food just to get caught up again. XD It's a great time waster at work, but if you want something exciting, it's probably not the best.

I'm still working on the Nexus battle-thing, it just went on a bit of an unintended hiatus when I went to visit my parents. Intended to spend two and a half weeks with nothing to do catching up with creative stuff and... no drive whatsoever. *sigh* Maybe having to work again will actually see me doing something again.

And, sigh, eventually I'd like to have the Dragonmasters of Zekira thing rolling too but ... lol that would require me to do a LOT of art... ;) But, right now, it's kind of completely self-sufficient, if anyone actually ever wants to try it out. It's got dragon as well as dragonmaster generators, and an event generator that you can put your guys through...

Hey Shard, do you have a link handy to information on your Dragonmasters of Zekira game? I would like the chance to read up on the concept. :D

Well I am going to be correcting lots of page errors in it, when it gets moved to the dtf.com site, but here's the original... hard to read, lol.

http://www.geocities.com/dragonmasters_ ... ra/dmz.htm

(here is the updated version, with better tables...
http://www.droppin-the-fork.com/dragons ... ra/dmz.htm )

** Character generator, not the one I wanted to show
http://www.droppin-the-fork.com/dragons ... random.htm

** Dragon generator
http://www.droppin-the-fork.com/dragons ... agrand.htm

** Event generator
http://www.droppin-the-fork.com/dragons ... events.htm

Basically, the dragons there are animals, except perhaps one or two breeds that can become quite intelligent with mutations. Your character(s) would be from the lowest status in the world - Slaves and Bonds, those who show promise as a dragon-master, but would still have to buy themselves out of their situation.

So the dragons get paired up with their master, it can be multiples depending on what kind of powers / mutations the person has, and they get sent out to battle in random areas of the world. I'd like to more narrow it down to localized places, but it's not a big deal to have a battle all the way across the world and still participate in it.

The battles can leave scars, cause the character or dragon to lose 'turns' (saying how long it takes to recover), or even kill one or both.

The way I did my own couple of test characters is that I put together a Bond, and he had some ungodly amount of credit to pay back to get out of his Status. Then I ran a bunch of battles, and kept track of both how much money he'd made for each one, and how much time between them given recovery time. Generally I think I did one battle every 'season' for the purpose of keeping track, and counted how long they'd been at it in addition to the money thing. If they start out quite young, it's best, because some of them might actually be too old to command their dragons, if they aren't lucky.

The dragonmasters don't fly the dragons, they mentally command them.

Basically it's an offshoot of the whole World of Zekira game I've got developed, I'm even somewhat thinking of integrating it entirely into the story of the core world, instead of letting it stay an Alternate world.
