Oh look, paint! And also: Commissions?

Post by Unyko »

Alright guys, it's come to the point where I need to replenish my diminishing monetary resources. I only have -just- enough to get me through two more months paying for my phone bill, and then I'm broke. I've got my other account, but that money's strictly for moving with. And I'm not sure it'll be enough to get me and Bel(l)a (my car) and Riva (my cat) across the country.

So here's the deal. I can sketch, I can ink, I can paint. I can even mat and frame. Question is, how much are you willing to pay for said services?

Sketches: Will probably cost about $5-$10 if people don't mind just getting the digital scan. Probably around $15 if they want the real!media copy. 'Cause I hate giving up the real thing. x.x;;

Ink: Um. Again, if it's just the scan, likely $10-$15. I've got a couple of inking styles, too. There's the clean style that I use for things like this, or this (I love working in that style X3), and there's the sketchy style, for which I have no good example scanned at the moment. ^.^; Will have in a sec. <3

Paintings/Illustrations: Er. Not a clue. >.>.. What do you think? There's no way I'm doing a full painting/illustration for less than $15 though. *blink* Hopefully I can get more than $20. Anyone think $30 is too much to ask for a painting about 8.5" x 11" in size? Obviously simple/no backgrounds will be less expensive than fully rendered/detailed backgrounds, too. Here are some examples, if you haven't already taken a peek at my Flickr gallery. I'll do the paintings, or the black and white illustrations, or the light-on-dark illustrations.

Matting/Framing: It usually costs somewhere around $100 to mat and frame a picture at a store, even if you already have the frame. I'm willing to do the same job (and pretty darn well, if I do say so myself), for a fraction of that. If you send me the picture and ask it be matted and framed, I can probably do it for around $20-$30, plus the cost of the frame you want (or the cost of wood + labor if you want a custom frame). You can even specify colors and style stuff just like a normal framing place, too. I've only got two examples right now, but I'm working on a few more to show soon, with various 'effects' and whatnot. ^.^;

Wow, did you actually read through all that? *impressed*

Well now. What to do? Should I post a poll asking for a price range? I think I'll x-post this to a couple other places, too, while I'm at it.

What do you think about all this?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just wanted to show off my latest bits of art. ^.^; I can't use photoshop very well at the moment (the computer with my tablet and photoshop is difficult to access, so I'm 'stuck' using traditional media. Which is fine, since I've had a taste for painting after my illustration class. <3
So here goes: paintings ahoy! :D
(Click for enlargement ^.^)
Scratch that, I'm only posting this one for the time being. The other one is being difficult. <.<; And my computer is being decidedly unhelpful. Won't even rotate the thing properly. *needs photoshop 7 or greater* x.x
Anyway. Yus. <3 I do like this one. In case you don't know the char, t's a portrait of Xalia's Naoryn. ^.^
Also, do you think anyone would be willing to commission a painting of that quality (or greater, if I can ever figure out how to properly paint fur)? *poke at it* It's about 5" x 9" ... I think. Possibly 5 x 7. I can't remember. And Xalia has the original now. *sheepish* Anyway. I need the monies for my move this summer.
Thank you thank you! <3
I tend to go a little crazy with the highlights. ^.^;; Actually had to resist adding more, even. *snrk* Definitely need some references next time I attempt a furry critter, though.
That's so pretty! I don't have the patience or skilled hand to do that in real media. Wow.
Thankyou Shard! :D I'm beginning to love real media. Fairly meditative, actually. ^.^
Oh also, I forgot to mention my Flickr account. I believe I'll be uploading art there pretty much as it happens, and there's some other stuff (along with the painting that I didn't post here) over there, too. *salute!*
Trust me guys...he looks /so/ much better in person...the picture kinda faded him out a bit because he's matted and framed and behind glass... :D
He's gorgeous!!! I have him sitting on my desk right now only because I have no idea where to hang him...
And Uny, if you need someone to play with the other picture for you I could pull it up in Photoshop and at least rotate it or something...
Xalia: *giggle* It's hard to get an accurate image when using a digital camera, after all. ^.^; And you'd do that? *love!* I'll send you a link to the pic of Caco's painting to play with. <33!!!
Reenee: Thankyou! :D And I'm -sure- you could do some pretty awesome paintings. I've been stalking your dA gallery lately. X3 I like your style, and you've got a pretty good grasp of color/light logic. When was the last time you painted?
Dray: XD Thankee! *love* I need to take pictures of some of my other (non-assignment) jewelry and toss it up there, too. <3
Well I finished an oriental calligraphy class a couple weeks ago which involved some painting... my I haven't used acrilics, etc since high school.
This was my last painted piece... 4 x 8 feet. o_O Massive. Took 5 weeks to do. xD;
A big art store opened up near my work, I should pick up some canvas or something. <3
For full colour stuff, I'd say anywhere from $30+? Depends on what you're asked and what you're comfortable with. :)
I'd have to agree, 30-50 would be very reasonable for your color work, I wouldn't say less.
