Advice...

Post by Silver Midnight »

My parents are after me to try my hand at doing some freelance work, it's generally difficult to get a decent paying job without much experience in anything. I've never, honestly, sold much of my artwork though. There have been a few requests for tattoo designs and such, but most of the time I haven't... ended up finishing them. People've disappeared or something, or I just never got around to it because I figured they weren't serious.

I'm considering seriously giving the whole "freelance" thing a try, if nothing else but to supplement my income. So I'll have more and be able to do something else. Figurine painting was suggested to me, I've also thought about sculpture and possibly making unique beads/pendants to sell. However, I'm not sure where to sell them or anything.

Anyone have any advice? I know we have a lot of artists floating around here. :)

You really should :)

If you've got crafts, ask around (like at your art store, or coffee shops) if there are craft fairs and places where you can sit and hawk your stuff live. Otherwise, ebay's good for that kind of thing, though shipping is annoying I would imagine.

In the field of cartooning there's a famous character designer named Stephen Silver. On his art blog he had a list of tips to be more creative in art, business, etc. (here)

He gives a couple pieces of advice that retain very well to being a freelance artist... they hit very well from what I've experienced in my work.

"Keep your day job." They don't call them starving artists for nothing. There's good times and bad times... From my freelance experience, it's been a nice little bit of extra cash every once and a while... Like, I charge $30 for commission, and I get one every couple months, maybe. If you want to reply on it as a job, especially if you're just starting out, its not worth it. On this list he also adds "Selling out is harder than it looks." and "Being poor sucks."

Another very good bit he brings up, "The most important thing a creative person can learn professionally is where to draw the red line that separates what you are willing to do, and what you are not."

and, "Beware of turning hobbies into jobs."

addition: Craig's List usually has people looking for people to do jobs. I know my friend got a couple graphic design jobs that way.
