Well, it was about time for it, really. CPU alarm started going off yesterday, which means my CPU is overheating. It's possibly the power supply, which isn't really big enough for all the things running off my system (like that pair of 17" monitors!). Bought a new power supply today, since I was gonna need a bigger one regardless, and will be installing it this evening. If it works, I'll be back up and running today.
If it's the motherboard... I'll be out for a few days. Don't abandon anything that's due up. Merc, expect delays on roleplays if I don't get online this evening...
Computer troubles... *sighs*

It definitely wasn't a fan problem. We isolated that fairly quickly. Having multiple computer skeletons around is useful for that. I have a really, really nice fan... It cost the equivalent of $50, but it's water assisted to balance out the fact that my computer always runs a bit too hot.
We do know enough about computers here to isolate the easy problems.
It was actually the power supply, hence why I'm now posting. We put the new one in (a 500W compared to the 350W I was using) and now it's fine. I'm keeping it under observation for a bit, because the alarm was going off when there was no way it could have been getting too hot... But it's been running for 15 minutes now and seems to be okay. So, back, still here. Not having to reformat...

Well, I'm here, but for all intents and purposes, I'm not. Basically, my computer is having borderline overheating troubles, because the new power supply vents heat in a different way to the old one, causing a build up of warm air over my CPU. My 'idle' running temperature is 67C / 152F, which is on the borderline of the 'safe' temperature specified by the manufacturer. This is with the kickass fan running on maximum and everything... If I do anything with the system that causes greater CPU usage, the temperature spikes and the alarm goes off.
So, I'm here, but limited to AIM, Firefox and Outlook Express... No Frontpage or PSP. So, I'm here, but not doing anything particularly useful or meaningful. The bonding roleplay will continue, but obviously I can't finish the images until some kind of solution to this issue is found...

I use an external fan over mine, which blows all that nice hot air over my feet under the desk....

And it lives!
The problem was... incredibly epic:
A month ago, a power surge killed E's motherboard, so he bought a new one.
The new motherboard was incompatible with his graphics card.
So we swapped our graphics cards, so he had my mediocre one and I had his kick ass one.
The kick ass graphics card is extremely power intensive, and when I got my new power supply, it got a bit excited, resulting in CPU overheating.
Swapping the graphics cards back to their original systems dropped my system's temperature by over 20%.
But then E's system began crashing again, due to the aforementioned graphics card and motherboard incompatabilities.
So we bought a new motherboard and CPU for E's system, so he can have his graphics card back.
I got his motherboard and CPU, which was confirmed compatible with my graphics card.
I have just now finished the essential post-motherboard-replacement-reformat.
Which means I'm back, with a significantly better system than I had at the beginning of this week, and due to (kindof) efficient hard drive organisation, I haven't lost a single file. Just need to reinstall all my software, and I'm done... Yay!
