hi from the nut house
I've been insanely busy lately, and when I have a few minutes, I've been avoiding the Nexus out of guilt for being awol and having so many things patently Not Done.
I'm not leaving and Ryslen will reappear on the net. I just have to find the time.
(7am, before work, while procrastinating something that was technically due yesterday is not the time to work on that, obviously.)
AND I have to find the CD and reinstall the stupid printer driver -again- so that I can scan the heavenly bodies template too.
Yeargh.

Things just keep getting better...
and by better, I mean worse.
I live with my sister (Frizzle) and her boyfriend -- 'cept they broke up last week and he'll be moving out as soon as he can find a place.
I'm stressed out like you wouldn't believe, and I don't know yet if Frizz and I are going to be able to afford this apartment when he's gone.

zomg, what a week.
So at 3 a.m. Monday Frizz and I were woken up by an odd sound. Water running. A lot of it. I bolted out of bed, across the room, and into the hallway. Squish. Swearing ensued.
Long story short, the supply line for the upstairs neighbors' toilet somehow came unattached, and the water all ran down into my apartment. The water continued to run until almost 5 a.m., when maintenance finally got here.
There was water in the bathroom, through the entire hallway past the bedrooms and out the door of the apartment; half of the master bedroom carpet was soaked, a third of the other bedroom, the linen closet, the hall closet, and the coat closet carpets were soaked. The light fixture in the hall outside our bathroom filled up with water. The main hallway outside our apartment was wet, and the fluorescent light fixture there was filling up with water as well -- the plastic dome/cover fell off of it and shattered at some point, though I don't know when. The water ran under the door into the apartment across the hall (the doors are staggered, so the door for 105 is halfway between the doors for 104 and 106 (ours). We think that 104 may have gotten water in their bathroom. I never went upstairs, so I don't know how much water actually stayed up there. The restoration crew told us that two sections of wall (stud-to-stud) between our bathroom and the main hallway were -filled- with water. It was very bad, and we got the worst of it. Damn you, 206.
There have been giant fans and a huge dehumidifier running in my apartment from about 3 p.m. Monday until about 3 p.m. Friday. There's no ceiling above my tub/shower, and the access panel for the plumbing for upstairs is off -- which the children discovered this afternoon, peering down into my bathroom and giggling.
Only two things got damaged by the water -- one of Frizz's textbooks ((oh, the upstairs neighbors are showering again. Bastards.)) and the signature/souvenir book from her high school graduation. (She's more upset about the textbook, oddly.)
At this moment, Frizz and I are packing, because we're f*cking moving out. Our lease doesn't end until May 31, but we can't live here right now. Her ex took advantage of the situation and moved out Monday afternoon (luckily, the place he was moving TO bent the rules and allowed him to move in mid-month). We're hoping that they'll let us break the lease without penalty -- because we could totally sue 'em for what they -haven't- done for us since we discovered not-our-fault flooding. (They didn't offer to move us into a vacant unit. They didn't offer us a rent reduction....) and they'd better be paying the electric bill for this month, because those huge fans were pulling huge voltage. (see? http://twitpic.com/18u32g )
We've been staying with our friends who live four blocks over -- fortunately their den is equipped with not one but two futons, and Pixel (yes, her nickname is Pixel. Swear to deity-of-your-choice.) has a lofted full size bed in her sewing room for some unknown reason.
And they'll let us stay until the moving is complete. (They have kitties. This is a VERY good thing for Frizz and I right now.)
Anyway, I'll be lurking same as always.

Oh jesus fuck.
Yeah I had two similar experiences... Two different apartments, two floods from above.
The one, *refused* to replace the pads under the carpet even though you could not just smell but SEE the mold already growing there.
If they don't let you break the lease DO find a way to get back at em. Because my god. Wow. *hugs*

Yikes! Check the terms of your lease and the legal code for renting in your area. I'm pretty sure in my area if there is so much damage to the unit that it becomes unlivable the management is required to pay for your stay in another location until the damage has been repaired. For example, bad wiring causes a fire, no fault of the renter, and the apartment is destroyed. No other units are available...the management has to pay for the renter to stay in a hotel while they fix the apartment, or I think they're required to not accept rent payments so the renter can afford to stay elsewhere. If they're insisting you have to stay in unit and continue to pay rent and won't allow you to break the lease without penalties definitely seek legal counsel. I don't think the law anywhere would insist that you keep paying for an apartment that's unlivable...
Hope this all gets fixed soon!

It has been a long and crappy week at Casa de TyGryph...
We're just about done moving OUT of the apartment, despite having two months left on the lease. Because they did the cleanup/repair promptly (save for a few idiot things like not putting up six feet of baseboard...) they apparently don't owe us jack. Unless our aunt (a property manager elsewhere) can successfully cast her magic and get us out of the lease without penalty (looking less and less likely by the hour) we'll still have to pay the last two months -- and considering the lease-breaking penalty is two months rent, we'll be paying the same amount anyway.
I have spent the last thirteen days not sleeping in my own bed, but tonight, at last, I will have that familiar furniture and my own pillows and everything... back at Mom's house. Frizz has no income, since she's finishing college and living on her student loans -- and has to have surgery on her knees again once the semester ends. And I can't afford a one-bedroom apartment on my own right now due to my debts -- being unemployed and having to rely on your credit card is a bad bad plan. Try not to ever have to do that, m'kay? So we'll be back at Mom's.
I may be moving in with a friend of mine when her lease is up (in two months, conveniently) but we're still negotiating...
But I may have to let that opportunity go (which would suck for her) because they've started laying people off from my job. While I'm reasonably sure that they NEED me where I am and doing what I'm doing* -- they're still quietly laying people off after five retirements, and closing the satellite office in another city. It could go sour any time, and then I'd be unemployed with no income to pay rent with. I'll be polishing my resume once I have a few minutes to relax.
Of course, all this crap leaves me longing for the relative simplicity of the Nexus. Floods are plot fodder, nobody has to "move home to mom" because crap happened and they can't pay their rent... hell, I don't think paying rent (beyond the occasional inn while traveling) has ever come up in a candidate/rider story. (Go ahead and prove me wrong, but making the rent doesn't generally figure in anywhere...)
Love to you all,
Ty

Oh I hear you on so many levels. I've entered bankruptcy for my credit card and other debts, I'd far rather pay a lawyer 2k than visa 10...
And moving in with mom.,... at least your mom's young.
And jeez, give my support to Frizz, owch.

Aww, what crappy landlords. That's just the sort of thing that makes me lose a little faith in humanity! Well, at least you only had 2 months left on your lease, and didn't renew it recently.
That's better than it could have been!
I'm glad to hear living with your mom is an option.
It's saved my butt more than once, including right now, after my second job just laid me and it's whole staff off to close the building with 6 days notice ahead of time. I'm hoping that doesn't happen to you.

I'm glad to hear living with your mom is an option.

a quick update from your very own TyGryph:
I'm moving! I get keys to my new place on Wednesday, and having had less expenses the last month or so, I've got the cashy money necessary to get the webspace set up. (hooray!) It is still probably going to be a bit until I get everything up and running, but things are looking up!

Computer and modem, can't forget that. And pack the toilet paper, some garbage bags, some easy-to-prepare food, and maybe the microwave someplace accessible. And pick up some plastic cutlery and paper plates at a local store. Trust me. XDShard wrote:Yay!
