Naming Help?

Post by Yakima »

I've decided that, as long as no one minds, I will join the Nexus space ship fleet so that all the dragons here will have a home. However, I cannot for the life of me think of a name of a ship. (to much Star Trek back in the days...) I was thinking The Oddessy or The Phoenix or something...something to do with traveling around and giving all these "lost" dragons a home or two. *nods* I like Star Trek-like ships. (But I like the idea of a huge flight-bay with a lot of windows...heh)

Anyway, I suck at naming ships so...any ideas? :( In the mean time, I'm going to try to sketch out what I want this thing to look like...this ought to be interesting...X

Heh, well mine is the Caledrus, which was inspired by two things: Billy Thorpe's "21st Century Man" album (the sequel to Children of the Sun), and this school folder I bought in jr high that had a maze on it, of spaceships and stuff. :)

Maybe a name of an ancient place, or object, from Greek or something, they seem to be neat words just in general - familiar enough but exotic at the same time.

The great space revolution hit the Nexus somewhere around the time StarCity and Abstract Destiny opened. Now, I won't say that those were the FIRST, but I will say that with the advent of distinctive space technology, other parts of the Nexus quickly discovered space tech as well.

It's amazing how those things spread, isn't it? XD

I don't have any ships, myself... save for JKat's alternate matrix universe... but that's not the same thing. XD

Check out greek/roman names, maybe? Various deities are often used for names.

eta: XD Yakima, your J?? creatures are called 'Jracini'!

I've had mine for years. Glad to see I'm not alone anymore.

And Greek and Roman are okay, just stay away from the tragedies.

>.< I've been trying to avoid the space-ship thing but...I'm blaming all the trailers for the Star Trek DVD and Star Trek itself. I love Star Trek. And I need a place to stick all the dragon's I've collected over the years that don't fit at Falas, the FGPC, LSI, Treval or Baskar. XD Even when I was toying with the Isle of Rys as a location for them all, I was orgainizing it a bit more then I wanted. This might be the only way my mind can picture a bunch of random creatures living together with no real reason other then they needed a home. XD

Annnddd...thanks to the USS class Prometheus, I finally have a design I like.

XD I knew they started with a J. I was going to find out and change them as they were paged. *nods* But thanks! That saved me the hunt! LOL :D

I actually thought about using the name of my Matix ship, as I never really got into that one. (needs to find name now...hehe) My Matrix knowledge was too little to hold my interest. :(

Yeah, Voyager is my favorite ship of all time, but that was an Intrepid Class. XD This is a different class. It's actually more of an arrow-point. *nods* Voyager was rounder. XD :P I also gave it more of a "pot-belly" as the star trek class is narrow and more stream line, being a fighting ship. I'm still playing with it, trying to mold it to less Trekie and more...pretty? Hee...now that one really does look like an arrow head. LOL

*goes to try to figure out how many decks...and stuff* Had to scrap my Flight Deck idea...would never have enough room for it. :( A holodeck should do the trick...*nods* Hard to figure out, dragons varying from horse size to...huge sized. Is 24ft going to be too small for some to walk comfortably?

Heh...I knew I would go into too much detail once I got going. urg...heehee

Well, at this point I don't have much...I'm just trying to determine how tall and long everything is.

This is what I have so far. I intend to redo this on the computer so all the lines are STRAIGHT! LOL. I don't think I'll be able to get into the nice little technical detail I like seeing on the drawings of the ships - I'm not technical inclined. Heh..

Here are the stats so far:
Side view...
Image
Top View....just started it so there is pretty much no detail:
Image
Quick Specs
Length: (still calculating)
Height: 275 ft
Crew Size: 175
Number of Decks: 10 (5 double (dragon) decks, 4 average decks, 1 flight deck)
Deck Height: Dragon Decks = 24 ft; Human Decks = 12 ft (2 ft between the decks)

Decks and Usage
There are 10 total decks on the Last Oddssey, five of them accesable only to the dragons (unless they are small enough to fit on the normal decks).
A: for crew only
B, C & H: other humanoid residents of the ship
D,E, F, H, I: dragon residents of the ship

I don't need it to house thousands of dragons, just like 200-400 max. Comfortably. I don't know if I need to add levels and make it bigger so that the dragon's quarters arn't cramped, or what. I kinda see this thing going to places like Star City and other planets, which would allow the residents to "hop" off and look around, or something. I also want to try not to make it look so Star Trekie...though I love Star Trek ships...>.<

*shrugs* Dunno...you're the expert. LOL ;)

*edit* ah here it is.

I think you still have a very long way to go if you're hoping not to make it look 'star trekkie'. >_> Maybe try googling other space-faring sci fi shows and movies. Like Star Wars, Babylon 5, Andromeda, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica (new and old), the various Aliens movies, the Riddick series.... XD you get the idea.

Right now it looks exactly like a ship from Star Trek that had its nacels copy/pasted and flipped vertically. >_>

Star^3, I say.

Shard, that site is fucking brilliant.

And damnit, I will resist this spaceship trend! I will! (Even though Enzan Shi wants hovercrafts. How the hell do I incorporate hovercrafts with GRYPHONS as the indigenous mythological top predator? And with a shattered mosaic of countries instead of the usual united planet vs the universal stage. I mean... RESIST.)

Graeth: You attached hoverjets to the gryphons, didn't you.

Also, Yakima: EVE online has a vast variety of ships to look at. http://www.eveonlineships.com/index.php has ingame screencaps of all ships. And http://www.eve-files.com//media/12/eve_chart-rmr.jpg is an overall size comparison chart of the ships. *cough eiffel tower at bottom left cough* Though, really, the ingame screencaps are a better bet for looking at them.
