Alair WolfKeep - A Wingless Wolf :P
I am working on getting the back bones up. I will have a handful of wolves that need homes, too. Some are old and have been up forever. Others are some of my own that I decided to give away because I have 40 wolves at Alair...So they're going on the adoption list, too. Some of my Frenzy wolves. I went and added a bunch of wolves from old RPG's (Ty will recognize two of them. LOL) so I had a huge group show up. *baps Sahvente on the head* Now, to choose an alpha female for Sahvente, the Alpha Lord of the keep. Heh...not easy. He may be single for a long, long time.
While I get all that straightened out:
I've decided on the size ranges for the wolves. I think these might be smaller then I previously used but I've done a bit of research and decided on the size range of the Gray Wolf (which seems to average at 2-2'6" feet tall). Most breeds will be around 2' to 2'6" while a few, probably the Alskyrian only because they have longer legs which will make them a bit taller, and the demonic western wolves of Cani, will be larger, closer to 2'8"-3'. Here is a chart...drawing the images for it so I'm just reusing the dragonrider guy from my Pernese charts and three of my wolves (who are not actually those sizes...>.< I just clicked on a picture to use. heh)

Wooh, new wolves! Don't want any inbreeding happening with the current ones!
(Speaking of which, Yakima, a friend mentioned something called 'Wolf: the animated feature', which is something like an animated movie that is produced entirely by wolf-lovers. XD I immediately thought of you when I heard about it -- you should google it up! You might like it! :3)

Here is a size chart for ya...these are the average heights for the wolf breeds. Some are the same but I included different images because of there color types (brighter or "natural").
http://www.wolf-mage.com/wolfchart.png
Here are the height ranges:
Alskyrian & Avian Canese: males: 2'4" to 2'10"; females: 2'2" to 2'8"
Pernese, Reririan, & Elruvian: males: 2'2" to 2'8"; females: 2' to 2'6"
Demonic Canese: 2'8" to 3'2"; females: 2'6" to 3'

Once my wolves start having babies I'll match them up to those heights. XD The current lot are all roughly 3' at the shoulder, but I think that's because that's what was given during the opening frenzy? Too much of a diversion to go back and make specific heights for them right now, but if I have spare time I'll see to it, then.
O.o Have any of those batwinged brutes been released yet? I don't think I've ever seen one in circulation, so to speak.

That's fine, Dray. I didn't have a clear picture of there size then. This was how I pictured them...my mind wasn't working right back then. LOL
No, the demons haven't yet. I have no image for them, only the pups. >.< When I do, I'm going to make it pretty clear that they're evil, bullies by nature. Any given out here are probably going to have a "nicer" side. XD

They were given out shortly before you went on break, I think! In the Giveaways thread. The images are still up there if you want to peek through the rest!
X3 I'm going to work with that template if I have any more pups born to Nidus Corona. In character, the wolves haven't settled into a real pack or taken proper permanent mates yet. (how many wolves did you say form a pack? I think I have more than one would likely hold. D: I'll have a hard time splitting them into two though!) Out of character I'm still playing around with how I want to set things up. Don't know if I want a real wolfkeep with the rules and the updates and stuff, though I do like giving things away!

Ah.
Pack size would vary and it's really up to factors like space and the wolves involved. Even in the real world they vary. I guess there was a record of like 30 wolves in one pack recorded at one point but that's rare. Alair has many packs living in the same area. Alair is a neutral zone where there is no territory boundaries. The packs work together, following the Alpha Lord (a term from Elrion) who is the over all Alpha, like Alynn on Rerir who is the High Alpha. You can have as many packs as you want in one location of any size, really. They just have to get along. XD
As long as you keep records of the wolf pups and wolves you give out, i don't really mind. For all I care, a WolfKeep (or WolfDen...) is a refuge/home for a bunch of winged wolves that aren't bonded to a rider/persona of a designated location. *nods*

I have decided, for some odd reason, to put litte images of the parent wolevs (if available) in the records. However, due to geocities closing and me not able to recongize all the owners by the URL, I don't know where to find some of them.
Here are the ones I am looking for:
rust Athlore Kethlar
dark brown Dyami Sirhann
dalmation Eaaril (Shard)
gray Kroro Ironnight (Kesava -lost)
gold Aleal Stormblade (Kesava -lost)
silver Ketair Aviener
gold Elnevi Tiian
silver Meneia Sashre
brown Eeita - found image, need URL & owner
common gray Aelarel Kamerin
white Rapian Turlsor
black Sholeh Duhain
gray Hyrish- found image, need URL & owner
Likewise, I may have the image of your wolf but I can't figure out who is who. If your wolf is in folder just point it out. Thanks!
I also will need URL's *nods* So, once they are moved, let me know. XD

Is this her image, Kit?
Also, I may...again...change the height ranges as to many people have them over 3'. I think if I add 4" to all the sizes, we should come out good, eh? *nods* I think I'll do that. Then people won't have to worry about changing there wolfs' sizes. *nod* As long as you don't kill me for not making up my mind. LOL *ducks*

SHOOP DE WOOP:
I was trying to figure out why your critters would have many different coloured offspring from one litter and then I couldn't get this out of my brain until I had it all written down. XD It has nothing to do with magic/abilities, just colours and how common grey might work.
Colour Genes:
Two sets of colour genes are closely linked on the same allele, meaning that one set can be replaced with the other, or even genes within the two sets can be swapped (thus why so many different coloured pups can show up from one set of relatively normal looking parents.)
Some genes are related to magic.
Colour genes are marked 'Cx#' where 'C' means 'colour', 'x' stands in for the breed of wolf that the colour comes from (Alskyrian, pernese, etc.), and '#' stands for the rarity. (Note that the numbers determine the dominance; Ca1 is still dominant over Cp2 even if the colours are the same. Ca1 and Cp1 in a pair would work much like 'Common Grey'.
Alskyrian Colour Genes:
Ca1 - Grey
Ca2 - Greyed Brown
Ca3 - Black
Ca4 - Red
Ca5 - Brown
Ca6 - Tan
Ca7 - Gold
Ca8 - Silver
Pernese Colour Genes:
Cp1 - Grey
Cp2 - Greyed Brown
Cp3 - Black
Cp4 - Red
Cp5 - Brown
Cp6 - Tan
Cp7 - Gold
Cp8 - Silver
Reririan Colour Genes:
Cr1 - Grey
Cr2 - Greyed Brown
Cr3 - Black
Cr4 - Red
Cr5 - Brown
Cr6 - Tan
Cr7 - Gold
Cr8 - Silver
Cr9 - White
Elruvian Colour Genes:
(Need more info on what magics are more dominant; coat colour directly linked to magic)
Canese Colour Genes:
Cca# - the 'a' causes more saturation to whatever colour is shown as well as giving multiple tones of dark and light. This only occurs when the Cca# shows up in the first pair of colours, not in the secondary pair.
Ccd# - the 'd' causes whatever colour is shown to be darkened greatly and to show multiple tones of light and dark across the body. This only occurs when the Ccd# gene is in the first pair of colours, not the secondary pair.
Cca1 - Grey
Cca2 - Greyed Brown
Cca3 - Black
Cca4 - Red
Cca5 - Brown
Cca6 - Tan
Cca7 - Gold
Cca8 - Silver
Ccd1 - Grey
Ccd2 - Greyed Brown
Ccd3 - Black
Ccd4 - Red
Ccd5 - Brown
Ccd6 - Tan
Ccd7 - Gold
Ccd8 - Silver
'Common Grey' is caused by a gene which flips dominant/recessive pairs into co-dominant pairs, so a pair which is 'black dominant over white' would become 'grey'. Similarly, 'gold dominant over copper' would become 'rosey gold'. There are two different levels of co-dominance.
-rr means a solid coloured wolf.
-Rr (pretty common) makes a wolf mostly one colour, but with a hint of the second geneset's colour dusting its body. Some wolves that look 'rr' will actually be 'Rr' but with very little dusting.
-RR causes the 'common grey' effect to show through, using a lightened version of the dominant colour for the base, and mixing up to all three of the other colours across the body. Generally how this works: most common colour (grey, for example) is lightened, works as a base colour. Second most common colour is prominent like a blanket. Third and fourth most dominant colours are dusted across the wolf and tend to show more prominently in the feathers. If the wolf's genes are all one colour, the 'RR' effect tends to lighten and darken things slightly to add some variation.
**There must be a gene that causes two coat colours to mix evenly, creating a new colour: for example, when Gold and Red mix evenly, they create a copper wolf -- a colour that has been known to show up rarely but more than once.
***White must also be FAR more common than what I have listed. I have some white Alskyrian/Pernese mutts, but according to the lists that Yakima made, white doesn't even show up as a possibility for those breeds. o.o I'd propose that white be moved up somewhere around Grey and Black. XD
Patterns:
Separate from the 'Common Grey' set. Patterns are rare, and are not well-known enough to determine the gene sets that trigger them. Some known patterns:
'Dalmation' - a white body speckled with black across both fur and wings. (Reririan)
'Black Prism' - either a black body or a common grey body with red and gold in patches across the body. Wings are mostly red with gold points and markings possible. (Reririan)
??? (Are there more patterns out there?)

*snerk* well just wait until I put up my next litter... that gene chart may get a workout...

No doubt. XD I think it would be nifty to try a couple of litters using those sorts of guidelines, though having to adhere to them all the time would get pretty boring after a while, I imagine (especially since if you went by that, every common grey pair of wolves would only make common grey babies! D:)
And ooh, a new litter! :D I'm always looking for ways to keep inbreeding out of my critters, so I may try to snipe some fresh blood! :P

How do you mean? As I was thinking, Rr could range between (nearly) completely solid, to mostly solid with a fresco bit of some of those other three colours.
I think that the biggest reason that I figured moving real 'common grey' to RR instead of Rr (which was what I had originally figured) was that there'd just be too many of them... and that parents of two solid colours would pretty well ALWAYS wind up 100% common grey, which hasn't been the case when people have just been winging it! Moving 'common grey' from Rr to RR still allowed the trait to be dominant, but it also meant that it wouldn't dominate a litter unless both of the parents were common grey... XD Something that can sometimes be avoided if you wanted some solid-looking colours to pop up!
I don't know. I think it could go either way. XD Maybe doing some 'test' litters with Rr being the real common grey, and some where RR is the real common grey would give a better idea of how litters would turn out.

Um...that was a typo...*nods* I'll have to fix that. >.< XD *goes back to continue reading this...yum...Dray I LOVE you! This has been plaguing me for months! Here's an example of a litter that I tried even with white being the rarest colour. XD
(GG/Gg/gg = common grey or no, wereas RR/Rr/rr = complete roan, the same way that gold/red might make copper.)
Hyriu: Cr9Cr9 Ca2Cr9 gg Rr
Jeyyea: Cr1Cr9 Cr3Cr5 GG rr
Cr1Cr9 = Grey x3 18.75%
Cr9Cr9 = White x3 18.75%
Cr3Cr9 = Black x3 18.75%
Cr5Cr9 = Brown x3 18.75%
Cr1Ca2 = Grey 6.25%
Ca2Cr9 = Greyed Brown 6.25% <-- instead of greyed brown being a colour in its own right, it would be interesting if it was in the same boat as copper: grey and brown together using the 'roan' gene so that brown and grey hairs are equally interspersed.
Ca2Cr3 = Greyed Brown 6.25%
Ca2Cr5 = Greyed Brown 6.25%
Gg x 100% (all partial common grey)
Rr x 50%, rr x 50%

Or, make the "pattern" for "common gray" a separate allele-thingy set.
Common gray is a mix of colors and shades and can have a very wide variety ranging from nearly white-ish to a more, if not very brown, shade.
This is Aria Ruari, for example. In the records, I have her recorded as brown. However, next to Alynn Easal you can see the same general "pattern". She does lack the "multi-hue" tones associated with a common gray which is why she is brown, not common brown or common gray.
This is a common gray, Jalepp, (alynn is an example of a dark common gray):
This is Nijeyy who is also recorded as common gray, but is very, very light.
<-- looks like i haven't shrunk it yet...doh...>.<
So, yeah, maybe separating common gray from the solid coloration somehow so that you can have a wolf who is "solid" but retains the common gray effect, like Aria. Perhaps the R/r dictates the solidness of the color, like rr is solid, Rr allows for other colors to show through, and RR allows for more coloration differants, like in Japepp (the one above Nijeyy). Rr may be an exsample of Rr. Aria could be rr.
Make sense? *blinks* And, just some random off the wall info, Jalepp and Nijeyy's colorations were taken off real wolf pictures. Porbably why they look the best, LOL (to me, at least.)
