Wanna input on a new Pernese Weyr?
I'm having an indecisive... well... lifetime... In anycase, I'm opening up the chance for people to have input into the Weyr I'm in the process of building...
I'm going along the lines of it being a new Weyr, maybe making use of a long forgotten abandoned one, maybe brand new making use of natural caves and stuff... although, thats not set.
Other things still in the "consideration" stages are:
It's Name - the only thing I've thought of is "Thuraiya" (it's arabic, for the star cluster of the plaedies), but that's the only one I have in my head... options are always good.
Location? Thinking the Western ring islands (they don't annoyingly, appear in the Atlas of Pern... but you can see them on this map from a MUSH site here - for those interested, my previous "Weyrs" were on the Far Western Continent (Tiyaza) and the Eastern Ring Islands (Sunstone) respectively.)
Names of places within the Weyr (perhaps there is a lake named after someone, something?)...
And, any other suggestions / things you can think of, would undoubtedly make me smile too.

Pass/Interval you're gonna be in so I know how to send candidates to ya?
And maybe a pretty little detailed map of the lower caverns so I can...*segs throws something at her* Okay, I'm tired, what can I say...
Other then that, I don't know at the moment...I really do need to get to bed...

Falas and the FGPC are in the 11th Pass. Dark Moon WeyrHold is in the Interval following the Old Falas Weyr (11 Interval, I think? Maybe it's 10th...can't keep that one straight.) Turn 3011 is the current Turn for Falas/FGPC, 2820 for Dark Moon.
I'm not sure when/where everyone else is. Most people arn't going to care. XD We all have ways of getting candidates around time.

Pass/Interval could also help if you want to coexist alongside someone else's Weyr, maybe to collaborate on stories or roleplay or ease the writing/record burden by sharing workloads... maybe you could have complementing Weyr names.
Can you tell I have no clue how this works? =3
If you want a list of NPC workers and Wingriders without having to go through the process of individually crafting them, I have a few generator sites. Names and physical descriptions mostly. At the very worst, you could name and describe your NPC Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, or Searchriders.
As for more specifics... what kinds of crafts or pastimes do you see your characters taking part in? It'll give your candidate stories a lot of local flavor, not to mention perhaps inspiring stories from others. Also, you don't want beach bums dressed for southern surfing showing up at your subarctic Weyr, for instance. =)
A far northern locale might engage in some of the rougher tasks like mining or deep-ocean fishing. My southern Weyr had a Farmcraft that focused on orchards, while my Eastern Ring locale had an extensive seacraft and engaged in heavy sea-faring trade. And piracy. I love that Weyr.
I'll continue to ramble as I have ideas. I'm at least good at rambling.
EDIT: If it helps, if I ever decide to actually get my projects off the ground instead of existing as piles of notes...
My Aster and Sixpoint exist a few years after the start of the 9th Pass. Aster is Southern and has the most screwed up history known to Weyr-kind. Sixpoint is a far northern, mostly secluded offshoot of Telgar and High Reaches founded during the Moreta-era plague. Corvus is 11th Pass, Eastern Ring Isles. The den of high trade, high Marks, and corrupt sea-faring ne'er-do-wells.
I have another location tying these three together, but that's my secret for now. =D

I wouldn't mind also sending out more Alabaster, Blackstone, Dragonhope dragons/riders to fill wings up. Myself I'm less concerned about the pass/interval, because I always - ALWAYS - wind up messing through time anyway. And yeah lol - it'd be hilarious if you took the same island as the Protectorate AND Falas! That's one WELL WORN weyr!!

Yes, the western islands seem to be home to both Shard's Protectorate and Yakima's Falas Weyr, so you may want to pick some other islands. XD
Everyone else has good suggestions! Something else to consider would be what Candidates you'll accept. Offworlders? Pernese only? Do they stay with the Weyr and train until they're ready to join a Wing or do they get to Impress and then scarper off as soon as the dragonet's fed up and dozy? Is it related to the rest of the Nexus in any way, or is it a Pern-only adoption site?

For some reason I had to put this from Philippe's Pre-Search. J'tha is taking him to the Council room to meet with the Weyrleader along the passage and Philippe mentioned that Cedrik (later C'rik) had told him the Weyr was still being rebuilt. "Yes," J'tha answered, sounding a bit amused. Then his tone changed sounding more solemn and grave. "My friends and I used to explore this area before we Impressed five Turns ago. Before we were sent to Fort Weyr for some "real" training after the Hatching, we decided to try to set up a Weyr here. There are no records or anything but I have a feeling there use to be a Weyr here before. You just don't get pre-made service shafts or dragon weyrs naturally."

You would think so, right?
I've always wondered how Pernese humans existed stably for 3000+ years without making many significant technological innovations... you'd think that anyone who'd forgotten their roots (who didn't have religious dogma to keep traditions alive or else) would want to make their lives generally easier... even with Thread falling every couple of centuries, it couldn't (and didn't sound like it did) put humanity back far enough not to allow innovations to grow on themselves.
Pern has such the potential for some serious steampunk elements using alternate sources (I remember something about the planet being low in metal minerals or something?) for building and upping quality of life. Even Egypt made massive pyramids over their 3000+ reign. :o

Yeah the reason it was deemed inappropriate to fully colonize was the "rn" part of the name: resources negligible. There's not much mineral stuff to work with, unfortunately.
However, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of STONE, and with enough innovation they could very well have done things with it that theyd' be able to live "outside".
Of course I run into a similar problem of ancient civilization with Zekira: how to keep them roughly at the same level of tech, without growing too weird and without falling into stone age, for 11 thousand years...

I think that it just needs one repressive group to keep everyone in fear in the dark, or else folks are going to want to improve their quality of living... I suppose that the Lord Holders could have played that role, though you only ever saw that kind of behavior out of the 'evil' Lords... Benden at least I'd have thought would be progressive, being McCaffery's baby. XD
Makes you wonder where all that rock went that they dug out of the tunnels... it couldn't have been quarried out and used to build outbuildings at the very least?!

I think it's a serious case of cozy timekeeping on Anne's part. She takes a tiny chunk of the 9th, 6th, or 3rd Passes and writes romantic little vignettes (and plagues, can't forget plagues in a McCaffrey setting) without considering the larger scheme of historical progress and cultural, social, political, or technological evolution.
Not to mention just how long a span of time 200 and 500 years is. It's hard to believe nothing of note happens between pass and interval or long interval. It's like she hung herself on a cozy medieval fantasy notion and to hell with anything but static utopia and burying one's head in the grub-infested dirt.
It's not just technology though. Take the beginning of Dragonflight. In thousands of years of existence, only one person has tried consolidating the Holds, by force or otherwise? Consider China as one example. That country in its lifetime has had dozens of bloody wars and campaigns by hundreds of warlords and emperors trying to unite the land.
Makes for interesting reading, by the by. *pats her copy of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms*
I know someone tried bringing up the argument that the Pernese outlook works in cycles rather than linear progression, thus excusing how static the world remains after 2000+ years, but "history repeats itself" isn't meant to be taken to that kind of literal extreme.

The Holds had stone buildings outside the Hold walls. Key one that comes to mind is the one in the Harper Stories, where the girl "harpers" lived... I forget what the womans name was... but hers was a separate dwelling to the Hall.
And... I've made a couple of decisions:
Location - I'm going to stick it on one of the lower Eastern Ring Islands... Sunstone was near the top (the one about level with Benden Weyr), I'm thinking I'll go a couple down to the one more on a level with Half Circle... possibly the one below that, I'm not sure... it's warmer, for one. lol.
Candidates - I will be stating a preference for Pernese Candidates. Although, I *will* accept human, or humanoid (with no noticeable differences), from offworld - but they would have to get to Pern to be searched, and my search riders would warn them to keep their off world discussions to the minimum.
Colours - For those of you who haven't seen my initial mention of this, I am planning to hatch the five main colours, and rares about as often as bronzes, if not less often... and probably the same rares, as oppose to a different colour each clutch.
Pass/Interval - I'm thinking an interval (partly to explain my intention to have even golds clutching at a very maximum, like 15 eggs)... but Ive not picked which yet

Sounds pretty solid thus far. Means I'll have to give some more thought into where I'm placing Corvus to make sure I'm not stepping on your toes. =)
Regarding rares though, how would you handle parent dragons of definite unusual coloration, such as a parent from the Braethas Raug, the later Flurries, or some similar event? Would they clutch solid colors regardless of lineage, or would you make exceptions once in a while for particularly special dragons? Would you accept them rising/chasing at all?
On a less extreme front, how about variants such as dual-tones, speckles, Light/Night/Twilights from Ryslen, or Dawn/Dusks from Seiryuu? Or my personal favorites, the comparatively mundane white?

Oh, heck, sorry... I didn't see that was where you were considering for Corvus, I'm willing to rethink if you like... heck, I can dump mine at Sunstone in a different pass... tho... I'm leaning towards somewhere warmer.Keilin Alyr wrote:Sounds pretty solid thus far. Lights/Nights and Dusk/Dawn's would certainly be welcome, they are to me, still the regular colours just light/dark versions of the (and, I do plan to have a couple of shades of each colour myself... although, a light green, and a dark green will both just be "greens") - In regards to rares, I am leaning towards suggesting they find other Weyrs to rise at; It's not meaning to be rude, but more that if the parents were rares, I'd be more inclined to hatch rares from them, however - and I do want to try and keep the place fairly traditional. I would like rares to be, well... rare (to me, it means more when they aren't appearing every clutch, or, when half the clutch isn't rare... etc).
I haven't decided for definite, but my current thought pattern is that I'll be restricting rising/chasing to the traditional pernese colours (well, gold and the three male colours)... but I might make an exception for a Black/White born at my own Weyr for example. (Or, if I end up with one for a character of my own from somewhere, and they move to the Weyr permanently).
(NB. I may end up with a second more relaxed Weyr at some point, (if I start to have a mass of riders on dragons I don't want at this weyr, I might end up needing somewhere to put them) - but, I'd like to keep this one fairly traditional, if I can anyways.

Nah, its all good! =D It's gonna be a long while before I get to Corvus in the overall scheme of this project, and the Eastern Ring looks to have a whole mess of islands to choose from. You pick your location, and I'll see where I can place Corvus that's best for mainland trade.
That, and both of my 11th Pass Weyrs are very minor fixtures. I also imagine Corvus would probably rather someone else combat Thread in the Eastern Ring so its dragons can ferry trade goods and cause a ruckus. XD
It's been such a long time since I've written candidates for an old-fashioned, ultra-traditional Weyr though. Hopefully there's enough golds belonging to people that are still active. Or maybe this Weyr could be like Jerdan/Aden or early Talor Cliff in keeping most of breeding stock within its own lines. We'll see what happens. =)

*grins* I love Falas.
*goes to sulk after opening her big mouth and making a bigger mess out of things* *sigh* Or I'll just work on a map...XD
They still use glow-baskets and stuff, but because of Avias I can have computers and genetics and all the things I love about Falas! And still keep it Falas. Mwahaahaa...They entered a well lit cavern with a long, oval shaped table in the center. It was made of a light, brownish-gray wood. A diamond shaped design had been carved and burned into the center. J'tha explained it was the Weyr's symbol. There were a dozen chairs around the table, tapastries hung on the walls depicting varies scenes – most had dragons. There were papers and what appeared to be a laptop computer sitting at the head of the table, where the two tallest chairs were. Philippe blinked at the fermiluar contraption and gave a short laugh. "I didn't think there were computers here!"
"About four-hundred turns ago there wasn't," J'tha grinned. "Rediscovered technology.

I still try to do the "old-fashion" clutches at Falas Weyr, and Dark Moon. I am basing them on genetics but I have realized I made it very hard for rares to "pop up" even with that code. *evil grin* Falas is actually a minor Weyr, too, though you may not see that one. Falas flies with Fort Weyr's Wings. J'ren wants to make it so that Falas and the FGPC are not under Fort Weyr's "control" but that will take some time. Fort's Weyrleaders like Falas (American Revolution takeoff, sounds like it. LOL)
Tiiyn:
You know, the Dark Moon Region is open, too. Falas protects it in the 11th Pass...I don't know about you using the actuall Dark Moon Weyr as a location if you put yourself in the 11th Pass but it's an option. *shrug* I don't know, I know Aden and Jerdan were almost like sister-weyrs. It would be kind of simular. Falas will help your Weyr and vise versa.
Or you can try a different location in the Region. You just have to deal with my Holds being in the way. LOL

Looking at this map, you can see where Sunstone was, and where I'm looking at my new Weyr going... I'm leaning towards the middle Island, with a main Hold there and perhaps smaller Holds on the Island above and below... (this map shows the sunstone (and new Weyr) group of islands with a scale for size). Strangely, the Holds attached to Sunstone, enjoyed breeding runners... they liked the freedom of being able to let the runners loose on the smaller two islands (Eliej and Rathiv)... tho I have to assume the runners were either very used to ships... or, perhaps the dragons carried them, lol.
I'm also thinking I'll settle on the 11th Pass - about a level with Dark Moon Weyr Yakima... that's one of the main places I'll be sending candidates, and, I'll figure out the jumping around a bit for everywhere else. Sunstone will be alive and active in that timezone... though, I'm not sure exactly what time I started it (aka. how old my characters there would be)... So I'll probably only reference it/them vaguely... I'm going to go along with the idea that the holds in the Sunstone area were starting to get popular, and they wanted to spread out to some of the other Islands (but, it being recent enough after the pass, that people still respect the need to have enough riders/Weyrs to protect the Islands.)
And... I'm planning to create one or two foundation golds... (one decended from Sunstone stock, to allow me to use those images once in a while), and I'm very slightly tempted to make a small exception to my "no old riders" decision, and allow Lendrae to move to the new Weyr too... I never did much with her, which I feel is a shame. Having it in the same timeline as Falas/Sunstone should enable me to find a couple more golds if needs be... though I think there are a couple of old world golds around places.

Heh, okay. Dark Moon is deserted in the 11 Pass so, yeah. I have plenty of Searchriders that can go between times (Tayenden will become the best for time-travel candidates after his stunt to get Cathy). M'len is best for off-world and then I have Aheya staying as a Searchrider when Falas "comes back". And, when Philippe comes back I'll have four but he's part time 'cause he's gonna be a Wingsecond.

Yeah, I thought just as I shut the PC down I'd said the wrong thing.
Falas is in the 11th Pass... Dark Moon is in the interval between the 10th - 11th... which is the 10th Interval.
I knew what I meant, I got confused in the writing it down. >.>
(And, It looks like, Dark Moon has been around for 11-12 turns, right? So, it's 11-12 turns into the Interval... Just thinking, for the sake of if end up referring to any riders...)

Re: Wanna input on a new Pernese Weyr?
I'm going to shift some impressions around a little bit, lol... I have a 22yo who impressed before Falas shut (from Blue Sky, I think?)... but I'd like to write her two little sisters as candidates... soo... assuming that's 12 turns ago, they'd be 22 and 25 respectively... so... we'll mess time a little to make them younger -grins-
And I totally forgot to reply to this... repeatedly... SAERI!!! -launches on- I don't know where I disappeared too. >.> I blame sucky-real life and sucky-job -nodnod-Saeri wrote:Totally not helpful to the main point of this topic but I'VE MISSED YOU. WHERE DID YOU DISAPPEAR TO. ;o;
And... I shall double post. I think I'm settled on most details now... just, one major one I'm missing.
A Name.
Anyone have any suggestions...? I'm currently toying with Virlante (Silent Mountain) taken from the Old Tongue in the Dragon Prince books (here). This is where Tiyaza (Lost Gold) and all of the Sunstone island names came from - Sallante (Dream Island), Eliej (Little Crown), Medripol (Five Star?) & Rathiv (Carpet of Flowers)... so it would follow the theme... but I can't seem to settle completely on a name that I like. (nb. Sydne, D'mic and D'rin were all Tiyaza/Sunstone riders from that planet, so they are to be blamed for the names -nods-)
