Gravity wyrms (or worms, interchangable) are interstellar creatures that live in wild groups called "colonies" around black holes. Gravity has such a negligible effect on these beasts that they are essentially immune to it and can freely cross the black hole's event horizon (the point at which all other things, including light, cannot escape the hole's pull). They are sentient creatures but do not build or invent and live simple, contemplative lives, feeding on the matter and energies caught by the pull of the black hole they call home.
They can and do roam freely from their colonies, exploring the many things the universe has to offer, but never stay away permanently. They find races that possess widespread "civilization" to be strange curiosities and even the oldest of their kind often like to investigate other races with childlike interest, though they are rarely naïve.
It is unknown how long gravity wyrms live but they grow constantly throughout their lives as they feed upon the matter caught by their black hole. An exceptionally well-fed wyrm will eventually grow to a "supermassive" form. At this point, most migrate from their home hole to that at the center of their native galaxy to join other supermassive wyrms. A few, however, venture to distant corners of space and allow themselves to die in a massive sacrificial implosion, creating a new black hole which will eventually draw new wyrms to dwell in.
Non-participants get a young worm, (proved) participants get a supermassive one. :3 The young worms are measured in a number of meters and are no more than a few centuries old, while the supermassives are more like several hundred meters and tens of thousands of years old.
They can be male or female. They have no names between their kind, recognizing each other by sight and mental signature, but will "borrow" names when interacting with races that use them. They will have a different name for every race they've encountered, as they will pick something familiar to the other species.
Crossbreeding is possible, but only with beings of a similar disposition and, preferably, cosmic caliber. They are wild and contemplative creatures and would only take another such being, free of the trappings of civilization, as a mate.
All wyrms have the following traits/abilities:
Cosmic Entity: Gravity wyrms exist in the vacuum of space and do not need to breathe or eliminate waste, and can feed on any matter or energy captured by their black hole. Gravity has such a negligible effect on them to consider wyrms immune to its pull. As such, they can "levitate" in any environment.
Gravity Well: Gravity wyrms can create an intense gravitational pull centered nearby or on themselves. This ability increases with their age and size, culminating in the implosion that some supermassive wyrms use to birth new black holes upon their death.
Stellar Song: The five senses of a gravity wyrm are intertwined so that they perceive what they call the Stellar Song, observing all things in a far more encompassing manner than ordinary creatures do. They can taste light, hear color, smell sound, see flavors, etc. in addition to their senses working the "normal" way.
Telepathy: The ability to communicate mind-to-mind.
Wyrmhole Travel: Gravity wyrms can traverse vast distances by utilizing the wormholes that connect one black hole to another.
