Gemstone Dragon Giveaway

Post by Dray »

Image
(An example showing a polished body and 'rough' wings!)

Form
Name:
Gemstone: (I'll pick a colour from it, instead of using the specific pattern... so something that's got a lot of colours probably isn't going to show up as awesomely as you may hope. :o)
Fire Colour: (Participants only -- the colour of the fire will give the dragon an extra magical bonus. ^_^)
Rough or Polished?: (You can also choose one of both for body and wings!)

Information and Rambling
These gemstone dragons are a breed closely related to those in myth and lore -- 'classical dragons', in another sense. Their bodies come in a variety of shades and hues, some sparklingly bright and others more muted or chromatic in tone. All, however, share a proud, warrior mindset and culture. While these dragons are not especially social, those who have been trained and tutored from birth become regal and valiant creatures, loyal to whatever king, nation or peoples they serve. Those who are left to roam free often become feral and highly dangerous, choosing only one or two others to call a pack and slaughtering all other comers.

These dragons need a strong-willed partner from a young age to teach them the basics of chivalry and knightly behavior; they live for several centuries and can be passed from trainer to trainer or rider to rider (when they're old enough, the decision is mutual -- they're just as intelligent as men!) but do not share a mental bond. They can breathe fire (some in brilliant shades that possess magical properties) but can't teleport, use psionics of any kind, or perform any other feats that a lot of the dagons in the Nexus today possess as natural abilities; these dragons rely on their intelligence, bravado, sense of strategy, and brute force to make their way in the world.

They are roughly twenty feet tall (quite large!) and fleet of foot, needing to consume several cattle or deer (or men!) per week to keep their furnaces burning hot. They reach maturity at roughly their first century, and the eldest can reach 1000 years old. These dragons lay clutches of eggs about a foot and a half long each, in up to four eggs per batch -- dud eggs are common enough that the typical nest hatches twins. Depending on the scarcity of food, dragon hatchlings will cull one another until only the strongest is left; however if plenty of food is available, all hatchlings will grow to adulthood.

These dragons are scholarly but are most interested in war lore, histories and tactics, some possessing great libraries of information on the subject. Most are hoarders by nature as well, starting small with anything that glimmers or otherwise catches the eye, but eventually gathering vast riches that they can use as beds. Older dragons even have jewels embedded in their belly-scales... a sort of permanent bling that shows their status.

All of these dragons possess dire names that reflect first their colour and then their badass shoutout to the world. 'Wrath', 'Ruination', 'Scourge', 'Death', 'Devastation' etc. are common names. Despite their propensity for battle and wargames, civilized dragons and feral ones alike seem to possess a fondness for maidens. The feral ones tend to find them a delicate snack, while the civilized ones may keep several to keep stock of their hoard, listen to their endless tales of bravado, attract competent young knights to prove their own bravado, etc. These dragons are natural enemies with the hooved mythical creatures, and take special delight in chomping on pegassi and unicorns... perhaps they keep maidens to lure the beasts within toasting distance, too!

XD I think that's everything.

Name: AmberAnnihilation (Or 'Amber', or 'Annihilation' or just 'Nile' if you'd like!)
Gender: Female
Fire: Violet Fire: This fire consumes not only burnable substances, but the life substance of a person, plant or animal -- its soul. AmberAnnihilation can use these souls to supplement her flesh and blood consumption, meaning that she could burn a forest instead of eating the contents of a butcher's shop to keep her going for several weeks, or she can collect the ashy byproduct of the soul consumption to power necromantic spells. (She could sell the byproduct to a sorceror, for example, in exchange for riches!) AmberAnnihilation must be careful with these abilities, as the taste of that extra life substance is heady, and it would be easy to ignore morals in order to gain vast riches... she is, after all, one of the very few sources of necromantic power that doesn't require self sacrifice...

Maerwynn
Image
Name: ObsidianObliteration
Gender: Female
Fire: Silver Fire: ObsidianObliteration's fire can burn and barbeque and do all that usual good stuff, but it also has mystical properties that, when captured and transmuted via alchemy, cause a massive growth in mental activity of those who consume it, allowing connection with the spiritual plane and sight into the future up to ones own death. Of course, when it isn't carefully harnessed and purified, ObsidianObliteration's silver fire will burn long after any physical, burnable substance has been obliterated, often settling into the ground and leaving it smoking and uninhabitable for generations. Special precautions must be taken on ObsidianObliteration's behalf to use only as much as he needs, or else to carefully scrub and dispose of the extras, or else he will quickly leave his home a glassy waste of a no-man's land.

Unyko
Image
Name: MoonstoneMassacre
Gender: Male
Fire: Blue Fire: MoonstoneMassacre's fire possesses special properties that allow it to freeze solid once enough materials have been consumed to reach a critical mass. Feeding a tiny flame the bulk of a candlestick, for example, will yield a 'glass' flame that sparkles with brilliant blue light at the center -- a very useful tool for sorcerers to draw energy from, and one that most nobles go gaga over, to boot. MoonstoneMassacre's larger flames, however, can glass entire swathes of forests, leaving the land bound under flickering, eerie light that has been known to enmire those who travel over it from time to time. Because of this, MoonstoneMassacre needs to act quickly after breathing a gout of flame, devouring his prey (if he intends to roast it!) while still alive before it can solidify. On the plus side, if his prey does become encased in his own fire, Moonstone Massacre can shatter and suck on the pieces like large, grisly jawbreakers. Oh, dragons and their crazy ways...

Lovely dragons! Too bad I can't draw/scan/color a decent looking dragon image to save my life, because magical fire would be SO cool.

Name: SugaliteSlayer
Gender: Female
Fire: Purple Fire: SugaliteSlayer's fire is not only combustible, but reacts with all woody substances to produce a potently toxic gas along with its regular smoke that's comparable to nerve gas; when a lump of coal or wood is kept in a vile and SugaliteSlayer's fire is added to it, the contraption can be set amongst the incense of a religious or noble figure's home to kill all who reside within it over time in an excruciating manner. Similarly, if SugaliteSlayer were to start a forest fire, there would be no surviving life for leagues around, as not only would the fire burn all plant matter, but the animals caught in the path of the smoke would seize up and die! Luckily, SugaliteSlayer's fire does not begin to produce this potent nerve toxin immediately, so if she slayers and devours a burned creature quickly, there is little chance that anyone not intended to be killed will be killed.

Name:FireOpalFell
Gender: Male
Fire: YellowFire: While FireOpalFell's fire acts like the regular stuff, the rays of light it emits hold such a hue that vibrates with the rhythm of life: harnessed in, say, a glass or otherwise transparent sculpture fastened by magic, it inspires feelings of euphoria and love, making it an essential product for rulers who seek to sway the masses with a sparkly! Uncontained, however, the light of FireOpalFell's fire acts as a frictive to life, meaning that simply gazing upon an unharnessed blaze will burn out the eyes of even those who are some distance from it. Those who are closer will be blown to dust before the heat even reaches them. That said, FireOpalFell must use his special gift with caution!

Shard
Image
Name: CarnelianCarnage
Gender: Male
Fire: Orange Fire: CarnelianCarnage's fiery powers don't make themselves known immediately; rather, they need some careful preparation to harness its full potential. In this case, purified fire can be used just a dab at a time to seal a spell and make it exponentially more potent than it would have been on its own. Unharnessed, CarnelianCarnage's fire will feed on (and be fed on by) magic, causing any spell no matter its state of completeness or quality to rage into being and then expire once it's explosive results are complete. He must be careful not to flame any enchanted livestock, lest the spells snap back at him... and unfortunately for CarnelianCarnage, this means that prey like unicorns and other tasty mythical treats are much more difficult to come by, given how they are quite magical creatures!

Agreed! XD I'm having fun coming up with fiery magic for 'em, too! Their names make me giggle.

I think I'm caught up! Let me know if I missed anyone?

(Also, Shard: XDDD I thought something like that might be appropriate. *evil laughter*)

These guys are really awesome.
I gotta finish my gem dragons before school starts! D:

EDIT: I just noticed that someone already picked Amethyst, so if you haven't already started the image I think I'll change my gem to Peridot. Of course, if you did already start, I am fine with my original choice. Sorry!

Name: PeridotPerdition
Gender: Male
Fire: Green Fire: PeridotPerdition's name is well conceived, given that his fire has a hellish quality to it that could easily be taken for something unholy. While his fire burns in the usual sense, the smoke that it creates causes horrible visions -- false ones, usually -- evoking past terrors and memories in those who are close enough to inhale. Distilled into a pure form, it is an extremely powerful device to drive a person insane for an allotted period of time. It's very popular in torture chambers for just that reason, or by rulers who would wish to rule by fear. When PeridotPerdition's fire burns unfettered it will leave greenly glowing embers that can wait in a very slow-burning form for years and even decades at a time, and then reignite at a random moment, making the places that he's not careful with into a living hell long after he has left the area. He must take care not to set anything alight that he doesn't mean to be irrevocably unlivable for many years to come!
