Trandiok Glacier

Post by Swift »

Chapters significantly updated with story titles. Most everything is cross-referenced to date.

Flying Colors, the 'novel', is begun...

Summer : Hatching Story
Reyalli's Rimienth and Ebset's Mantrateth hatch at Brynmor.

Three stories written this past week or two.

Summer : Solitary Evening
Shy Nekko adapts to life with Neroseth at social Dawn Sisters.

Spring : Face in the Mirror
Jer bonds bronze Kalidasik at Sunstone.

Spring : Together
Cortari, bronze Diraduth, Zharin, and green Ryadelath arrive from Falas.

And two older stories I found in the archives of an old update LJ.

Fall : Dead Weight
Sim and Saeroth deal with the usual dose of skeptical locals.

Summer : Tuna
Rhavik had only been at the Hatchery three days...

Anybody who wants can friend ~trandiok at LJ. I'll be posting updates there and here. The Yahoo group is nearly defunct. I hate posting there and I'm close to killing it completely. I'm looking for mailing list alternatives, but may just stick with LJ.

Zikek's Dunan, Kamaji, is up in the stables.

Slight adoptions changes, because I'm not up for clutches that never fill up and people who vanish before they can get the hatchings. I'm giving out dragons on a request basis now, if they're not just click-and-take.

Image

Anchorage's merthings are available for click and take.

Image

Aboli Cove's sea dragons, images courtesy of Ty Gryph from Ryslen (beautiful!) are available through request.

The rest of the adoptions should be updated this weekend. I hope to see some apps. I get the rest of the rules fixed and I'll offer some for giveaway.

Help! Has anyone heard from Serpent's Reach's owner? I've got three abandoned and no response in email.

Annnnnd, more of the same.

All the click-and-take pets on the adoptions page are available. All it takes is saving the image and filling out the form.

Caer Trandiok's cliff dragons have had a rules revamp and are ready. Submit a bonder or a sponsorship request and I'll send what you need to write and post. Pretty dragons from this one, too, owing to Tuehnth's coloring.

Image

Furino, Avast, Starlite, and Tallibot are coming tonight and tomorrow. Is anybody interested in a giveaway?

Swift... you didn't draw that dragon in your last post, did you? :{

I thought it looked an awful lot like a Dimar dragon, from dreslough.com, and I went to her site to check. And I ended up finding a dragon she drew that matched yours exactly on an overlay I did, except for the wings.

http://www.dreslough.com/main/Dragbodies/index.htm

Most of Dee's artwork on her site is clipart, meaning it's for free use and recoloring if you want, and Dee's super open about useage of her artwork, but I'm pretty sure it's not okay to redraw something/add wings to it and not give her credit/claim it as your own. :{

I looked all around, and I couldn't find anywhere that you'd said you'd been inspired by her or used her art as a base, so I assume that means you're implying you drew it :{

Yep, the base is from Dee but this version of the body (with wings) is originally from a place called Dark Moon Weyr (which everybody just called DMW). When that place went under in the McCaffrey scare, Starlite Hatchery was one of a couple places that had been given permission to use the old images in adoptions. The outline's been handed down with Starlite Hatchery and Trandiok Glacier, obviously, since I wasn't the one maintaining the site then, Sarai was. But it's all legal and good. These dragons have been around since 1999, at least.

For edification, http://web.archive.org/web/200106100223 ... n.org/dmw/

Why do I only ever get comments about stealing, instead of feedback on my fic? Not that I blame you, it's an excellent question and I know it's been forever since DMW went down so the oldies will remember it, but I just wonder.

ETA:

Dee Dreslough Hereby and Forthwith permits YOU: (Your name here) to use my art on your web pages (both for and non-profit) and to create derivative products from this art (needlework, stamps, stationery, other digital art pieces, etc.) The only restrictions on the use of this artwork is that you do not trademark or otherwise restrict other people from using it, or claim that you drew it. I retain ownership/copyright of my work (but not derivatives) and ask that no one try to lay claim of ownership through copyright or trademark to MY pieces. They are for everyone.

So really, it's not theft even if I did take them. Which I didn't. And you're perfectly allowed to take one and color it up the way you want and write a character for it and enter it in other people's flights and such, because it's a free piece of art. I just like having the hatchings and the drama that comes with that.

Good enough?

Well, I guess my only point is that I only found the image without wings, not with wings. Which means you (or whomever) added them, which is altering the art, which I'm pretty sure is still uncool by Dee's open standards. So "Dark Moon Weyr" is/was breaking Dee's rules, as far as I can tell. It doesn't matter how long that altered art has been around, if it's altered, it's still altered 7 years later.

Maybe if you just put a bit of text on the Cliff dragons' page, with a link back to dreslough.com and a little bit of info on the original artwork :} Kind of like how DMW has.

Lakota, DMW never did that and I'm fairly sure Sarai had talked to Dee way back when. There has never been a problem and a /lot/ of people have DMW dragons. Let me repost.

Dee Dreslough Hereby and Forthwith permits YOU: (Your name here) to use my art on your web pages (both for and non-profit) and to create derivative products from this art (needlework, stamps, stationery, other digital art pieces, etc.) The only restrictions on the use of this artwork is that you do not trademark or otherwise restrict other people from using it, or claim that you drew it I retain ownership/copyright of my work (but not derivatives) and ask that no one try to lay claim of ownership through copyright or trademark to MY pieces. They are for everyone.

Bolded emphasis is mine.

I have never claimed I drew the image, the credit page is among the pages that are still in transition (you'll notice the emptiness of the library), and a lot of people have this dragon. When someone allows their work into the public domain, you can do whatever you want with it.

Do you want me to leave? Is this the point of this post? If so, say so, so we don't have the hidden agendas.

Credit page is coming shortly. Image credits on main dragon adoption pages (cliffdrags.html, seadrags.html, and the index pages of the others) will be posted today.

For the Record

I did not draw any of these images. I only color the ones that came from Sunbloom Weyr. I don't even color the ones from Tiyanni. At no time have I stolen stories or images to use on my site.

Lakota, for the record, actually, at the time that DMW was open, ALL of Dee's artwork was available and for use for such things. She's never complained, and never asked anyone to remove them. The only things she doesn't like people (or didn't at that time) using them for was for-profit things. It's been used in half a dozen other weyrs, before and since, I have dozens of them from a variety of weyrs.

Honest - it's okay for her to use em. I like the image, I'm glad someone's got it...

Shard, respectfully, I'd prefer not to have to update the pages with all the credits. There's a lot and it's only Lakota who's asked. Am I running any risk of censure if I leave it the way it is?

Whoa, whoa. Far as I know, Dee's work is free for anyone to use/alter/give out. At least certain images are, under which this particular one falls.

Lakota, a lot of the old Agency owners used her images for their Weyrs since it was an easy and free source of dragons. Dee has never had any problems with our use of them and I do believe she's quite aware of it since many of our sites link back to or mention her. I'm not sure, but I think there was even a Nexus thread on her forums for a while. Just for us.

Swift, I don't see any reason why you should change it. You have the written permission from Dee.

Yeah I don't think that anyone would want *every page* to have to go through and link! :) One 'these = done by dee' would probably do at the start! :D

(and psst Swift - I missed your birthday... I'm givin away bday gifties. :D I *wanted* to do something military like your one bio/likes/dislikes listed, but I can't find that info any more... mind updating me?)

Too many pages, for starters. *headdesk*

Military would be ... well, USMC for starters. We have digi cammies now and we do earn the eagle/globe/anchor in boot camp. We have those cool dress blues that are in all the recruiting posters. I'm an electrician, fixing gear (mostly panels and pieces in the cockpit) on harriers. The Marines definitely hired a fashion patrol because we color contrast - white/blue, the four gradient colors on the digis, khaki/green... and the HAT. Females have to wear that hilarious thing called a havelock.

I like aircraft, pilots, sleek and muscled dragons, anything to do with being battle ready. I shot expert with the M-16 *evil grin* We're all riflemen.

I think that's what Trandiok is turning into, an air force capable of fighting on the ground when necessary. That's about all I think about these days, anyway. Marine Corps stuff. The rest of my likes are falling by the wayside.

Hokay. I never saw the last forum - only joined up when this one formed, so I didn't know about any previous alliances/allowances made by Dee. I know her art's pretty super free-use, but I didn't know if it was okay to alter it and whatnot.

The winged one was actually up there before, but I don't know my way around her site any more.

I'm still disappointed that while she was great and helped raise 600 bucks for my legal expenses vs the McCaffreys, she never did send me a print-quality JPG of that image that has since become the *cover of her book*.... :/ It was made FOR me, and that kind of pisses me off that now basically she won't even let me IN to the burned for fandom forums any more... apparently I was "too" burned... :/

But yeah, her lineart and black and whites are pretty much open game. She did stipulate after a while they were *not* intended for Pernese use, but since they were all in those more unique colors and such anyway, I don't think it mattered much.

I know DMW was pretty Pern-oriented for a while, but by the end it went lots of other colors. And Trandiok's definitely not Pern. I've used the image as a filler for those dragons of mine who don't have an adult stage, so I've always been free with it.
