Want to talk about random ... today I was looking over my friend's shoulder at her laptop and she for some inexplicable reason had the wikipedia entry for Schadenfreude open. And my first reaction was "WTF my balespawn is on Wikipedia," followed by "Wow ... that *is* what that means."

Balespawn growth time!

When it came to assigning Charm values this time around, I'll be honest.... If your character was not afraid of the Red Demon, you lost points. The Demon frightens everyone. :) That's just his essence. So, inversely, you could also earn points if I liked your portrayal of your character's terror.

As long as there's fear, though a fight-based fear would probably be suicidal. XD

Oh well that's a shame. I really liked Bill's story because it was fun to write, and I didn't want to do what I thought everyone else would be doing. I don't really mind about charm values or whatever (to be honest while it's a cool idea our boy Schaden is overpowered as it is

) it's just that Bill isn't the type to cower in terror even at the face of certain painful doom. It's not that he's not afraid -- he simply doesn't care that he's afraid.

Also it doesn't say that "inciting fear on everyone no matter what" is an ability of the red demon. There's like a sentence about it in the personality description but even that is up for interpretation. I'm really honestly not complaining and I think the images are great and I couldn't be happier ... I'm just pointing it out is all.

That and I really, really liked writing Bill's story and would rather not change it. Mneh

On a completely different note, what happens when these guys mate? Is it possible to, uh, do the nasty dragon dance, without the other party getting touched by balefire? How do corruption powers act in the throws of passion? And how does this effect those who in that one thread in general discussion had requested they rather not have their dragons modified in any way -- does that make any dragon drawn by that person automatically incompatible IC-ly to a balespawn? Thanks ^_^

Oh and because I didn't mention it above -- the images rawk.

As I thought I might, my comment hurt some feelings and I received some PMs about it, so allow me to try and explain myself in more than just a passing mention and hope I don’t come off as petulant.

Stories I read where the Demon was not feared was, to me, a something of an insult. Somebody doesn't have to be running around in a panic and pleading for his or her life to be afraid, certainly, you won’t find me denying that. But the Demon is essentially a god, and for me to emphasize the fear he invokes with his presence in both the hatching story and assorted blurbs on the site where he is mentioned, and then read bonding stories where he was not feared, was a little upsetting. I put a lot of work into trying to write a hatching that conveyed the fear blanketing it--I even had Anathema Scalesbane herself flee the scene after an aborted attempt at confronting him.

So for people to write their characters not fearing the Demon stung a bit. People do not fear the Demon because he is big and "evil". It is because it is his essence. It is not a rational fear. It’s the same sort of reaction as squinting at bright light or pulling your hand away from a hot flame: instinctive and protective. Fear of the Demon keeps people alive.

The Red Demon is the most powerful of my characters, period. So yes, I was hurt when the terror he causes didn’t get the credit I, at least, thought it deserved. I don’t need to see a character dissolve into a gibbering mess, but I did at least want acknowledgement that yes, the character was frightened, even if they had never known fear before and probably never would again (which was the case in a few other stories). The Demon transcends normal reactions.

“So you’re taking your hurt feelings out on our Charm values?” Well, yes, and wouldn’t you? Yes, some amount of leeway has to be given to others when they’re trying to write for your characters, so you won’t see me docking points off people that get a Seeker wrong, but when it comes to your biggest and most powerful characters, don’t you want to seem them treated as they deserve?

I’m not trying to alienate people here, and I hope the other offended parties will still send me candidates and stories for future enjoyment. None of the “docked” stories were in any way bad and I was not angered, and I still liked all the stories I found to some degree. <3

I'm not trying to start a debate NOR demand that people change their stories, either. But my Token/Charm FAQs do say I assign them based on my enjoyment of a story, so in this case I thought an explanation was warranted.

Were I involed, my only objection would be in principle-- it's almost bordering on godmoding, since you're kinda sorta imposing that every character ought to fear him. :3 then again, you've got a rational behind it, and it's justified, so eh. AND I'm not involved. XP Maybe that's why other people were annoyed about it?

*agrees with DF* Taking a character who has only ever /inspired/ fear and having them fear for their life makes for good plot and character development. It also /really/ makes you think which is why I didn't get my story done...I was at a loss as to how to deal with fear in a character who'd never felt it. XD But yeah, poor Sahkaeyla did not come out of that hatching the same as she went in...which will be evidenced if I ever get around to writing her story... XP

Edit: And I will say that when I first read the hatching and it said everyone was running around and cowering in fear I was like "Please, Sahkaeyla wouldn't do that!" But then I had to really contemplate how terrifying the Red Demon was so I could start to comprehend that Sahkaeyla may be evil, but even evil can be scared... XD
