Pern Movie?

Post by Yakima »

Not sure how many people here are intersted in this but I did a search after watching Eragon today and found out that in May 2006 they were talking about making the Pern books into a movie...

The first attempt failed, I remember, because they wanted to turn it into a TV series and the producers or something had wanted to make it more like Xena. It didnt go over to well, though.

Anyway, wanted to slap that up. After seeing Eragon, though they deviated from the book quite a bit (yeah, so Im only on page 151 of the book...) but watching the dragons fly were cool and makes me want to see little Ruth flyin around...:P That is, if this attempt dosnt flop like before - or hasnt already...*shrug*

[PS - my apostrophe key is causing the find thing to show up while typing so that is why it seems like I forgot it...sorry...:( )

I think it'll really depend on whether Anne's dead by then or not. Hollywood *will not touch Pern*. Because of her. Everything they tried - and they did try, apparently - she vetoed. They finally said screw it, not gonna do it.

If she sells the licence and someone else has creative control over it, then it'll look and feel great. :) Of course, it'd really depend on what story they choose to make.

They've been talking about this licence for like 20 years. It's a shame. Of course they were talking about an Xmen movie for about 20 years too, and they finally went and made em... :D

I dunno about Pern but I did see Eragon and there were some deviations I disliked - but I still liked the movie fairly decent. Ajihad and the Varden really needed more depth though, since they play such a major role in Eldest, at least at the start...they're going to have a really tough time with the beginning part of Eldest when they make that into a movie. @_@

I sneezed. It seems to have reshaped reality. My bad.

Hehe after hanging out on the NaNoWriMo message boards I find it shocking to see anyone discuss Eragon without spitting venom and shouting "PAOLINI MUST BURN IN HELLL ZOMGWTFBBQ"

Anyway I think that would be pretty cool if they did make a Pern movie. I don't much care for the world of Pern and McCaffrey's characters ceased to be interesting to me when I turned about 16, but there's something about a good old fashioned Pernese dragon that still makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

That'd be neat to see!

Me, when I go into a movie based on something else, I try to go into it without any expectations that it match up. That way there's less time spent bitching about how such a character isn't the same, or how the plots taken a tangent... either you can sit back and be entertained or try to chew on the message that the movie-makers have put together for you. (Hopefully both!)

I'm excited about the Golden Compass movie that's coming out, myself. :3 Those books were fun, and I loved the concept of daemons in and of themselves (Hah! Reading them as a kid and thinking, "I'd totally have a dragon! OH YEAH!) I'm sure the movie'll be different from the books, but it's still exciting to see things translated from book to movie!

I don't mind when they alter plots too much. LotR was still good and Harry Potter was the best translated book-to-movie thus far, in my opinion. I understand when they have to cut scenes or alter a plot. THat is why there is the books - so people can go back and read them and get all that juicy information. :P

My guess is it will be a few years before Pern hits the theaters. It took LotR a while to get going once they announced it.

Yeah but that was for the obvious reason that ... oh, say, they were *perfect* lol. :)

It kind of makes me sad that the Eragon movie isn't like the books - I haven't read them, and now I'm not sure what to do: see the movie and then gripe when I've read the books? Or just read them? Or just see the movie? In and of itself, is the movie *good*? If you've got no prior knowledge whatsoever (like me) will I like it just for being a reasonably good flick? Or are there huge holes in the story that'd be obvious without reading them?

And golden compass. Hum... See I still can't recall if the book I read was the first of those, or if I'm thinking of something else. Was that with the polar bear people? Because while I read that first one and it was moderately entertaining I can't see why everyone's so hot on it - maybe I missed something, or perhaps (more likely) I'm just thinking of something else and have missed another good book out there instead.

Golden Compass was the first book in the series, and the best X3 It had the polar bear people, yes.

I havent gotten around to reading the dark materials trilogy because someone told me the ending was depressing, and I have a thing where if I know the ending is going to be depressing I won't read it, because hey, who wants to intentionally depress themselves? Of course half the time when that happens the ending isn't even that bad ... that's what happened with Eragon for me, my friend told me it was sooooo sad, and when I finally got around to reading it, I thought "Uh, no?"

It's... mixed? I didn't really like the ending a whole lot, myself, but not because it was sad. I didn't like the preachiness of it, and the various twists it went in... it's like, I loved the first book, liked the second book, then by the third I was like "wait, what? no, that's dumb" XD

But I didn't think it was that sad, really. Certainly not depressing-sad.

Shard, I think it's a fairly decent movie, though I think they change the scenes rather awkwardly.....of course, Paolini seems to do that too, so I dunno if it's a good thing. ^_~ It's a pretty enjoyable fantasy flick regardless, I did enjoy myself for the most part. ^^
