Paint Shop Pro 7

Post by Cy »

I had to uninstall my favorite program because the stupid thing refused to work. It would freeze every time you tried to use a paintbrush [even normal ones], switch a layer, adjust hues, crop pictures, save pictures... small, random things would make it freeze up and not unfreeze [trust me, I left it sitting there 8 hours overnight and it was still frozen]

So I uninstalled it, but can't find my disc to reinstall it =[ Do any of you guys know where I can get it for free, or really cheap, but preferably free?

Aww that sucks. Somewhere I have psp 7 but I have *no* idea where the disk might be. Actually - I do. It's at my OLD work place, perhaps in the hands of an ex-coworker... Like that helps... :/ I've got a 6.3 disk, and my current 8.0 one... You might be able to look it up google or something, because it's not supported any more and may just be one of those 'wares that the company won't worry about any pirating. besides JASC was bought by ... *coughgagchoke* Corel... :( so their newer products may be just bastard offspring of the program we know and love.

I'll try browsing around. I hate that they sold out to Corel, I really do. And oddly enough, I've hated all their programs ever since 7. Weird, I know. I always saw 7 as the best, save for the confusing way the layers worked XD I could always do so much more with PSP 7 than I could with PhotoshopCS.

Trust me, bastard offspring is the perfect term for PSP10. I can't stand it - mom swears up and down it was made by the same programers before the buyout, but it really does feel like it any way at all. I stopped at 9, once you get past some of the wierder things it is right up there with 7.

Good luck finding the program, I wish I knew where my copy was. :/

I think I'm gonna stay with 8, I was going to hit 9 but meh, I already only use about 30-40 % of the program's capabilities. I'm useless with layers, and I hardly use any of the added extra stuffers, so hey, it's good for me....

I have pirated copies of PSP 7, PSP 9 and Photoshop 7. The latter two are a bit big for easy downloading, since they're over 100 meg in size each and my connection will only support a 55kps upload rate. But PSP7 is only 32 meg, so if you'd like that I can upload it for ya. If you got a decent connection on your end, I think you could download it in less than half an hour...

I loved using PSP7, but it was getting to the point where it wasn't powerful enough for the things I wanted to do, so I picked up Photoshop 7 (with optimism), but that was even worse. So I went back to PSP7 for a long time. Later on, I got Photoshop CS, and aside from the fact that I hated it as much as Photoshop 7, the blasted thing didn't work properly...

PSP9, though, is fantastic. It's taken some getting used to, because it is a bit different to use than PSP7, presumably because of being bought out by Corel? But now that I've learned all the slight changes, I love how there's so much more I can do with it. I'm a massive layer user, and PSP7's limit of 8 or 9 layers always frustrated me. PSP9 will let me have up to 500. Just why I'd WANT 500 is another question entirely, but at least I have the option to use them if I ever find a reason to do so...

Pirated copies~ The only thing i have is photoshop CS, which I swear to god hates me and doesn't work anymore anyways. I never got the hang of PSP.

LAst time I checked, you could download Photoshop on limewire. PSP was a bit harder, though; I looked it up and every copy I found was stopped because it was infected with some virus or another. -el sigh- But if you want to risk it, you might get lucky.
Photoshop used to have an option to seperate scanned lineart from the rest of the picture, though, with channels. THAT was helpful.
:/
But I lack any software now, and I'm stuck using Gimp. Freeware, but it's okay-- has a select-by-color and a layers tool, which ar the barest tools of the trade, i think. mah.

Shiolar, if you put any of those up for download, would it be possible for me to get my paws on it? But if that's not or it comprimises you i nany way, that's cool. ^^

Well, my biggest issue [and reason for switching to Photobucket CS] was PSP7's problem with layers. Maybe I was just stupid and didn't know PSP7 as much as I thought I did, but I couldn't do anything at all with layers OR lineart in PSP7.

I'm going to see about searching my house and my grandparent's house for the disc [I have the torn off flap of the box with the code on it, just no disc]

If all fails, I see about using Limewire to get Paintshop Pro 9. That'll still support PSP7 files, right?

to my knowledge, yeas. >.> but my knowledge isn't that advanced.

and i wish you luck on that endeavor. ^^ Tell me if you find anything; like i said, last time i did it, all psp things on limewire were virus wridden. But that was a year or so ago, so they could've flushed that by now.

It's only PSPX that will be all "THAT'S NOT A VALID PAINT SHOP PRO FILE!!" when you try to open older PSP files. 9'll handle it just fine.

Curse you, Corel, for buying out JASC and making the program all lame...

Tis no problem, DNS. I'll whack it up on my server later on, and you can download it at your leisure. It's also fully functional and virus free, courtesy of Shiolar Pirated Software Company (or something).

I have 8, it came with my computer ... I like it for some things but I'll take photoshop over psp any day. I just like it a whole lot better. You might try looking for a bit torrent file, other than that I'm not sure.

It would seem that there's no a lot between PSP or Photoshop, just a matter of preference. I always found Photoshop to be too unwieldy for the way I like to do things. Probably just coz I'm not used to the way it operates... *shrugs*

Thank you very, very much Shiolar =] According to my computer, it's only a 20 minute download, so that's excellent. *Bunches and bunches of hugs*

Well... I've reinstalled and reinstalled and reinstalled. I simply cannot get PSP or Animation shop to work. Both freeze constantly. For instance, PSP freezes everytime you try and work with layers. And seeing as I use layers for many things, that's not good. Animation Shop freezes every time you try and preview anything, whether it's an animation or an effect or a transition.

I thought it might be my computer, such as a space issue, so I uninstalled some biiig programs that I have that I never use, such as Dreamweaver and old versions of Microsoft Office stuffs.

Apparently space is not an issue because I'm currently only using 38% of my computer's space, and PSP and Animation Shop still refuse to work properly.

So I suppose I'm just going to have to give up and learn Photoshop as well as I knew PSP XD

Maybe it's something else to do with your computer... I dunno, how much memory do you have? PSP eats a lot of it. I have 2 gig of RAM, and I'm only now happy with the performance of my image editors...

Doubtful. My computer, by all technicalities, is back to the way it was before PSP started acting up. I uninstalled lots of programs, deleted many files, including music files, that I wasn't using or hadn't touched in a long time. They still refuse to run properly.

Assuming you're using the file I gave you, it has to be your computer, because that file is fine... And deleting files won't change the physical hardware of your computer... if you have a problem with your harddrive, RAM or graphics card, that could cause PSP not to function properly.

Hm. Well, I don't know. I mean, I know it's my computer, because the old version was doing exactly the same as the new one. Although, when I first installed the version you sent me, it worked just fine. But the more I used it, the more often it began to freeze.

Animation shop, for example, froze 5 times in 20 minutes last night. I really don't have the money or patience right now to fix it. I can do pretty well with Photoshop, so it's not like I'm pulling out my hair over having to uninstall PSP. It's just there were some smaller things I could do much better with PSP than I could with PS.

Could be some physical component in your computer is beginning to fail, maybe. Given that it freezes, I'd've said it's a memory problem, perhaps.

But it seems to only affect PSP and Animation shop, so it must be something connected to them. None of my other programs freeze nearly as much, if at all.

PSP is very memory intensive, though... as I said, I wasn't totally happy with its performance until I got a full 2 gig of RAM. Or maybe there's some incompatibility with your drivers... did you update them recently, after first installing PSP?

There have been a few updates yes, but it was acting out before all those.

Are you running anything else while using it? It sounds like you have bad memory, actually. It is an intensive program but frankly I've run it on less than half that and without any trouble at all. I do have to say though: psp 8 is better at keeping memory problems away than 7 was.
