You're not quite right, Shadow.

Aiden is not technically Gaelic for fire. Aiden is a modernised form of Aidan, which is the Anglicised form of Aodhán, which is from the name Áedán, which is the pet form of Áed, which was the name of an Irish monk and saint in the 7th Century. It's quite a leap from Áed to angeal, the actual Gaelic word for fire, however.

It's like running a translation through Babelfish multiple times... each translation becomes progressively more inaccurate.

The closest translation from the Gaelic word for fire into a modern name is actually Angela.

And hey, 80% of my ancestors were Gaelic, I've been learning to understand it spoken and read it in text format (can't speak it, though... I'm REALLY not a vocal guy. I struggle speaking English...), and I've always had a thing for history.

That's not what my book says! *points to the little pink hand book on her desk* And I'm fifth generation Irish! :D But I barely know anything about myself though. Oh well! *runs off to put up new drag.*

The books are using the incorrect translations, however, as I demonstrated in my previous post by quoting the correct translations.

Fifth generation Irish means your last Irish ancestor was five generations ago. That's 200 years, minimum. In reality, the culture you should say you come from is the one you actually live.

For example, by genetics, I'm part German. But by culture, I'm an English / Gaelic mix. I live in England, so I have an English culture, but I live in a Gaelic area, most of my relatives are of Gaelic descent, and I'm pro Cornwall Declaring Independance Of England And Forming It's Own Country. Because the government never got around to revoking our right to do that, unlike most of the rest of England. We'll do it one day.

So if I go by what you posted then technically I'm American but by genetics I'm part Irish. But because I live in Michigan, US. I'm American. *scratches head* That can get confusing. Oh, well.

Broadly speaking, yeah. If you act like an American and you uphold American ideals, then you're American. Also, considering that the American and Irish cultures are significantly different, you can't really be both.

Yes, you're American essentially if you were born in America no matter where your parents are from. Technically speaking I'm first generation American on my whole father's side of the family, as he's directly from Wales. However my mother's side came to the usa in the late 1800s.

Aaaanyway let's not derail this much more, mmkay? :D

Bummer, I'd have asked to snag one if it weren't past time (10min to 5pm West Coast time doesn't count though)! XD I like both of them... one looks glow-in-the-dark, one... well I just really love. More deserty-flamey/sunset goodness. X3 Just love on your work. They really are pretty. *nods*

*snugs* ^^ Thanks! In that case, I know who to put #1 with right off the bat~ Valentino: http://www.geocities.com/taikea/vampire/valentino.htm Haven't decided on the dragon's gender (I'm thinking maybe female or effimite male ^^ ); leaning towards bonding. :3

Edit: Ee... would you mind... terribly... doing up a list of Abilities? I'm terrible at designating (and naming) abilities. ^^; If it helps, in addition with what is listed on Val's page, he seems to have inclinations that warrant him obtaining a succubus-rukel. XD;;; *cough* Specifics I haven't decided on yet. e_e;

Uh... I was at WORK! I didn't have time to get her up. She will be posted momentarily when I put the finishing touches on her stats page.

Nephet is up. I was working on getting her a bond, but I panicked when I saw that people were already claiming her. So... no bond. Just a stats page.

And maybe it was just me, but I thought I had til Sunday to get her up. My work schedule has been ridiculous the past few days, horribly limiting my time to page/update dragons.

*reads back through the thread to see what she missed.... facepalms* -.- Alright, this is what I get from being stupidly braindead after work. Nephet will get a 'bond' later, as part of a short story. It's what I had in mind for her from the beginning. They don't really bond so much as form a partnership, seeing as they're both very stubborn people.

If you want number three, dragonflight, you can have him~ or it, rather. Since you were at work and /couldn't/ make a claim. -nods-

As for abilities, Neishai... hmm. Teleportation, Telekinesis, Fire breath, Telepathy, Unlimited Shapeshifting, Illusions/Light manipulation/generation [I.e, she can glow/make herself really bloody bright.]

Sorry to derail the thread again but I don't necessarily agree with that. Just because you're born in a certain place doesn't mean you can't be interested in/identify with the culture of your ancestors. I am a combination of all sorts of things actually but I am mostly Irish on my dad's side and a significant chunk on my mom's side and I am very into celtic traditions and culture. I still consider myself American as well and unlike many people today I do not think that american culture is inferior to/not as good as other cultures, but that doesn't mean I can't identify with other cultures, too.

Besides -- if people must leave behind all vestiges of their former culture when coming to the United States then why do we have holidays like St. Patrick's day and Cinco de Mayo?

What I meant, in a way, was that if you hold on to that culture, then fair enough.

But I've met Americans who're an eighth Irish, eighth English, eighth German, eighth Spanish, eighth Italian, eighth Scottish, sixteenth French and sixteenth American and so on, and the only culture they actually embrace is the American one.

If you're part Irish and you actually respect the Irish culture, then go for it. The majority of Irish-Americans I meet are, however, completely horrified by how much alcohol I drink, but compared to the average guy in Ireland, I'm actually a very light drinker. Not to be following the stereotype of Irishmen being heavy drinkers, but it is a fact that good strong beer is part of the Irish culture, whereas America's history includes prohibition, many Americans still consider drinking to be wrong, and ultimately, your beers are... Well, I'm not quite sure how to describe them.

If you're genetically Irish, but you strongly disagree with Irish ideals, then how can you claim to be Irish? That's the point I was trying to make. Claiming to be Irish because of genetic descent when you reject the culture itself is just as bad as people claiming to be Japanese because they like anime, while not having any genetic descent from that culture.

Shadow, how exactly does politics have anything to do with what culture you claim to be from? As Thomas Paine said "Some people have confused government with society, to the point of the two becoming indistinguishable. In fact, society is produced by our wants, and government by wickedness; the former promotes our happiness positively by uniting our affections, the latter negatively by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a patron, the last a punisher." Culture is born of society, politics is born of government. Don't get the two confused.

pfft, on the drinking thing, I may be American but I am also a college student. Interpret that as you will  And I agree most mainstreem American beers like budweiser and coors do suck a lot, though some of the locally brewed varieties are quite good. Though I'm not much of a beer drinker myself, I rather prefer rum and vodka (so maybe I'm Russian and don't know it, neh?) ;).

Blech! >.< Guiness has to be the worst beer I've ever tasted. Yet it's adored over in Ireland. Give me some rum! :3

And if you wanna run with sterotypes, I have yet to try any Polish drinks. Though I hear they're illegal in Canada. Which makes them something I /want/ to try. I love strong alcohol.

Hi! I'm a Canadian! :D We likes our cultural tapestry here, but honest to goodness, I just feel like garden-variety Canadian. I've got German, French, Dutch (I think) and later, American heritage, and though I probably have traits of all of those cultures I don't take them in as mine.

I think I was trying to make a point there and failed, so I'll just say it: what does it matter what someone else self-identifies as? There is no all-encompassing definition of any kind of self-label, so really, no one's qualified to tell anyone else that they can't call themselves this or that.

Obligatory 2c. :)

You're probably right, JKat... I suppose it just bothers me that I meet so many Americans who refuse to admit that they're American, and insist they know everything about a given culture because their great great great grandfather was from that culture... *shrugs*
