CSS/HTML help

Post by Cy »

***Edit: Music on websites? Yes or no?***

Google is being of no help.

Considering I use frames a lot [ok so a lot of us do], but when you link to, say, a character's page, it opens that page alone, without the frames, I was looking for a way to... embed or position a link at the very bottom of the page that you could click on to return to the main pages. Basically a "Home" link. But, I can't figure out how to do it with a .css file, and I'd prefer to not have to link each individual page.

Anyone know how to help or know a site that would be of help?

i didn't think that was possible in css, but i'll try poking around and see wot i can see. . . hehe ^^

edit:

yah. . . css is all about the style of the pages. . . if you were using php it might be easy to implement such a change, but i don't think css would help in this case.

of course, i'm in no way an expert, so don't give up hope just b/c of wot i've said. ^^;;;;;;; gomen ne.

You could... link back to the index-style page in the new window. o.o' Of course, then you'd have index-pages everywhere if you're opening new windows with each click.

that's all I can think of, sorry!

It's ok. I was just hoping that with CSS, you could use a position command to postion a link back to the main page in the footer of each page. Rawr.

Yeah, I was trying to do that recently, myself. I think there's something about 'Server Side Includes' that allow you to insert a bit of text (or a link, or a table, whatever you want) into the page... but your host has to have PHP access. If you google it you'll probably find a bunch of tutorials.

Well I consulted my mom(who is currently CSS-crazy  ) and she said -
no - they were correct - she needs to do it in the html. Even if she uses SSI she'd still have to add that SSI code to her page - no need for PHP just CGI scripting enabled. CSS could style the link differently there; but the actual html would need to contain the coding one way or the other.... And, alot depends on if she's using XHTML or XML strict doctype.
At this rate I'd just say it would be easier to write it into the html of every page. Write the html code once in notepad or something then copy-paste it onto each page, makes it quicker. That's what I'd do anyway. *shrugs*

You know, the easiest way to do it, instead of putting a home link on all your characters pages... Why don't you just have such pages open in a whole new window, which you can then just close when you're done with it? Or else just have them open up in your frames, and a home link in the frames, so it's always visible?

Because I was talking about linking to them from othe sites.

For instance, if I was to say, "Check out the new character I made!" and link to it's page, there'd be no frames.

My frames DO have a homelink in the navigation bar, and only outside links [like to other agencies] open in new windows.

For that, you'll be needing to individually put links on each page...

Orrrrr... Imagine if you set up each character to have their own frames, one of which is your home link page, and one for your character's stats, story, whatever else you want. Course, then you got to edit each page anyway...

Yeah, what I do is just put a link to the main page, or the "frames" in each page I do. That way, they can view just the page alone, or the frames as well. It can be a pain to do all the linking that way, but once you get the hang of it it's really no problem. ^^

Music on websites = boooooooooooooo, at least for me XD Maybe give a visitor to your website an option to turn music on, rather than having it on by default.

Please no! XD I tend to click out of a site with music as fast as I can, since it's generally of a different taste then I like, is too loud, or slows down the computer.

If you give an option, that would be really nice for anyone who /is/ interested... but for generic browsing, I'd say 'no'.

Agrees with all of the above. I tend to close sites with music, coz they always clash horribly with whatever I'm playing at the time.

No music. It's one thing to have a character based on a piece and you could link TO a file to choose to play if you like, but it's another entirely to have something start playing. Memory hogging programs suxxors.

Just curious =] During some of my stories, there ARE songs that set the mood, and I was curious if people would mind a player at the top of the page, where they could choose to play the piece while reading.

so incredibly anti-music on pages. . . x.X that's one reason i don't really like myspace. . . all that music on ppl's user pages. *Shudders* it's like being on sexual harrassment neopets.

anyways! <<; i know for awhile sky had the option of choosing a tune to play on her page, and i found that fun and rather tasteful. . . . i'm pretty sure it was sky. . . oo;;; with a flower-based layout. . . like. . daisies or something.

/tangent

so, yah, as long as it doesn't immediately start playing or wotever and you have to give it the option to load, i think it's okay. but that auto stuff. . . fastest way to make me leave a site. . .

. . as pretty much everyone else said. xD; *shutting up*

Ek, I have to agree - a link to a file would be alright but personally when I come across a page that has a music file that automanically plays I get a little violent. ^^; Not only does it slow my computer down but if I'm playing other music or forget the speakers on... I like to zip around really fast and nothing makes me leave a page faster.
