When I was in the new chatroom briefly the other day, I suggested starting a fund for those people who would need help funding a meetup :3
::nods to Xalia:: We could sell commissions or whatnot, or just donate to the fund. If we're thinking of planning it next year, we have a ton of time.

I think that the money thing could get touchy, if some people contributed lots and others mooched off of it... >_>" It's a neat idea, but you'd need someone to fairly moniter it and make sure that things are getting spent on what they were meant to!
As for donating to it, I'm not sure about that, since I'm having a difficult time keeping up with the essentials... I'd hope that if we /did/ have a get-together, we could make it more then a one-time event... that way, people who couldn't come one year, could come another?

Well, maybe people who didn't have the money could donate items or artwork to be auctioned off, so that it a way they WOULD be donating :D
And besides, I know that I could use my own money and not worry about dipping into donations (because I haven't quite yet managed to escape from the black hole that is my house). And if we were going to be *driving* somewhere, a lot of the Cali people wouldn't need to buy plane tickets. We could all split gas money and hotel rooms, and if we crammed a bunch of people into a few rooms, we could save a lot on that too XD
It'll still obviously take a ton of planning, but I think it's feasible.

I'm kinda iffy about having a 'money pool' too.. it could encourage an additude of, "Hey, other people are going to pay for me, so I don't have to try and earn the money myself!" I'm not saying there's anyone here that has that attitude, I'm just saying it could be something we have to think about if we're going to go the pool method.
And for the record, not only am I comfortable sleeping on the floor, sometimes I prefer it XD XD Bring on the crowded rooms!

Well, Math is my forte and I'm OCD so if you want anyone to organize it and keep tabs on the money I'd be willing to. Maybe we could have a requirement that in order to elligible for the funds you have to make some sort of donation, be it an art piece to be sold or a donation, or whatever else we can think of.
Like I said, if I had the money I'd fork it over right now to get us all together so you don't have to worry about me being sore over paying out more than others do, but there really should be a sense of earning here so no one gets a free ride while others are working their tails off to make the money...

I've read a few good ideas that have been posted about having a money pool. Requiring one donates something, be it money, artwork, or something of value (housing perhaps depending on where this is held?) before being given a ticket so to speak is one such idea. A twist I'd recommend is having such donations be anonymous as possible, with the only people knowing who gave what being the person in charge of the books so to speak. That way they could know who gets tickets, and it'd help prevent hard feelings as no one could be accused of contributing less by those who put in more. After all, some might have to literaly scrape for such a donation, even if its artwork.
That's a good idea...though how we handled art contributions and kept them annonymous would be hard (some people have pretty identifiable work after all), but overall I think that keeping it as annonymous as possible would be good. We'd have to be sure we nominate someone everyone trusts to be fair about the money to handle it though, which would be hard considering what a diverse group we are...

Actually, this touches on an idea I've had for a while. We could start merchandizing the Nexus. It would mean a LOT of rules about what could and could not be sold. I'm thinking mainly personal doodles and the Nexus logo all over the place. Shirts, mugs, mouse pads and the like. I think I know a place that could handle the shirts. Those businesses thrive around here. If we did get this going, we wouldn't need the money pool so much since the funds raised would go towards supporting the Nexus in general. We could get our own webpage and buy convention spots... stuff like that. It's a monsterous project though and it WOULD mean that any Pern agencies would have to stay out of it or move to another world.

There's always Zazzle and Cafepress if we think people will buy lots of shirts and want them shipped from a "company".
Also, my family bought a sublimation machine, which basically uses a special printer and special inks to print WHATEVER you want onto pretty much ANYthing... from ceramic tiles to t-shirts to mugs to puzzles to coasters to... yeah, anything :} You can put pictures on, drawings on, patterns, anything. You can even make a picture into a "mosaic" of 2-inch tiles to put into the wall of a bathroom or something. It's actually really cool :3 (I printed up this picture of Lakota on a 6-inch tile http://www.theglasswolf.com/thumbs/lakotaandbob.jpg )
http://www.dyetrans.com/ on the right-hand menu, look under Sublimatable Products for an idea of what our machine can do. My mom's been looking to start up that part of our business, and she'd be thrilled to make some example products or get some customers

I'd NEVER be allowed to go meet up with you.
"Um- I'm going to fly to SanDiego, and then meet up with two dozen people I've never met, but they all seem like nice, crazy people. We'll all pack into a van and drive up the coast, nabbing people as we go, until we reach canada, where we will do who knows what for a week or so."
...In three years, when I'm off to collage (possible UCSD, 'cause as a DC-er I get instate tuition to any state collage in the country...) I can come.
Or if we all meet up at a con somewhere- that'd be fun!

...I know MANY lawers. I live in DC. It's what almost a third of the people do around here.
What you need is to have a document, a release form, that says basicly that the art is your own and that you are giving it over to the Nexus.
The problem would be when you start to get famous enough that someone would join the nexus to try to take advantage of the profits or the like. >.<
Law is confusing.

Right now I wouldn't be able to contribute but I would try to! And I told my step sister about it and she told me to take her with - anything to get out of MN I guess...hee...we went to New York for two weeks, drove out there. (and I would drive, not take a plane...unless I absolutly had to!) *shrugs* I'm not sure about what's going on with fundraising but I have this evil little memory lurking in my brain about the Graphics Club and how I couldn't do any of the fundraising because of school and work and ended up not going to Vegas...a painful memory I'm afraid of repeating...*shrugs*
Summer is good. Maybe I would have a better job then!

yeah I think the only way Sunny'll get in on this is if I get to fly out to Ilya there in Singapore, and smuggle her back with me.
