Thunder rumbled over the Devil's Backbone, the day that Suletu'kee came to town.
The sky was bone dry, hazy, yellowed clouds of sand and dust rolling in and around the Nidus as the weather tried its damnedest to come to the Thunderbird's heel. Suletu'kee wasn't even trying, not really... okay, maybe a little bit. Having an entrance was fun, after all.
Her flashing red wings only helped: she floated down amongst the gobsmacked residents and allowed the electric crackle between her flight limbs to settle down to the occasional spark, and the demonic red glow of her 'feathers' faded to a plasmid, ghostly layer. She clicked her beak, looked from one dragon to another, and then stalked her way down through the footpaths with a skrick, skrick, skrick as her massive, purple-metallic scales scraped along one another.
She looked down at one of the smaller Hathians.
:: Where is your Hydra Brood? :: asked she. The nares of her beak had curled upwards, just a little. The expression wasn't necessarily friendly.
Mantling its scales, the Hathian hissed and then, thinking better of snapping, said, "Sssouth, inssside the cavernsss below." And then, "your intentionsss, sstrange one?"
:: A warning, or perhaps not. :: Suletu'kee looked beyond the oddly horned little being, at the wind that whipped across the Backbone and the stinging bits of sand flung up with it. An ominous rumble of thunder from somewhere close startled the Hathian into hurrying away, and Suletu'kee took her time on the rest of her journey.
By the time she reached Vesad and Mihaly's clutch, most of the little eggs had cracked open, spilling their contents across the sands in a gangle of limbs and heads and tails. The Thunderbird gave a little croon as the fathers caught sight of her, glowing red in the darkness, and with the croon came that same low booming, a growl of otherworldly depth.
Mihaly'tyan, more suspcious than Vesad, immediately bared his fangs.
Vesad extended one wingtine to his mate as four of his five heads eyed Sulatukee warily. :: Why are you here? Who are you? ::
:: Shall I answer you promptly, or later? :: Suletu'kee answered with a question of her own. :: Your children are looking for their place in life, are they not? Is this not their moment? ::
Mihaly, wary beyond relief at the touch of his partner, gave a growl of his own. :: These children are not for those with evil in their hearts. ::
Suletu'kee cocked her head. :: What beings are perfectly free of evil? :: When she saw Mihaly dart a look unsubtly at his mate, she creeled a bird-like laugh. :: Ah, I see. Well, love breeds more than hatchlings. Much more. And so does desire. I'm here to let you know that a pack of pirates had been planning on sneaking into your hatching for desire of powerful bonds that might gain them glory and gold. I caught them. I may have asked some questions. Politely. :: Lightning crackled between her wings as she smiled her birdy smile.
:: Word had spread of your union. I find myself curious, too: the beasts and hydras I have seen are intent upon cruelty. How can you trust that yours will not fall to such behaviour without strong mentorship? :: She continued before she could be interrupted, for several heads raised their voices at once from the two clutching creatures. :: How true that for any young being? I have a proposal for you, for both of you. Might I have custody of a child? There are others with the conformation you bear whose behaviour has been absolutely abominable. I wish to prove that the blood does not boil without the stoking of poorly behaved peers. ::
She cocked her head, blinking vibrant red eyes. :: What say you? When they reach the age of maturity, they might decide to return to you, or they might decide that what they have observed requires further action, in lands far from here. Or, perhaps, they might see brethren uncontained by morals or rules or ethics and they might wish to join them, to seek out the pirates that I may or may not have waylaid? ::
Mihaly looked to Vesad again, and Vesad looked to one of the hatchlings hiding behind his legs and tails. :: You don't have to go, :: he murmured, noting they'd been listening the entire time.
Suletu'kee raised all her scales and then smoothed them again, glowing claws flexing. :: What say you? :: she asked, no longer speaking to the little one's parents.
