Description: |
Tychari are a sentient alien species found in the Nexus. Their stocky, barrel-like bodies are the anchor point for six pairs of arms, a heavyset neck, and a short, muscular tail. One set of arms is long and powerfully built, with massive, blunt-nailed, four-digited "feet" comparable to those of the Terran elephant. Tychari walk with this pair in a lumbering shuffle and are not agile creatures at all. Given room to accelerate, they can run quickly by pushing themselves off the ground in long leaps, but otherwise they are measured, steady walkers.
Their other two pairs of arms are long and skinny, arranged around the base of the neck like the ordinal directions of a compass. These arms are three-fingered with a single thumb, and are incredibly dextrous and used for manipulating. The head is long, held parallel to the ground on the short neck, and is vaguely reminiscent of the face of a Moray eel. The lower jaw juts out beyond the bent upper jaw, and two small tusks stick out on either side. The mouth opens the entire length of the head, and their black, rodent-like eyes are set far forward between the end of the nose and the jaw hinge. The tail ends in a large, spade-shaped fluke, which can support the tycharis's weight like a third foot when sitting.
A tycharis's hide consists of thick leathery skin, mottled all over in assorted brown and grey shades in a wide variety of countershaded patterns. Generally they are hairless creatures, though the males have a small growth of hair on the chin like a unicorn's beard.
Tychari stand between 4' and 5' tall at the peak of their walking-arm shoulders. Both sexes have dense muscle packed to their compact frames, but the females are generally larger and stronger.

Society: |
Traditional Tycharan society is is matriarchal in all regards, with females being the dominant and chauvinist sex. At all points of their lives, males are expected to belong to a female, to the point that this is reflected in their naming system. If they are not selected as a female's consort, then they belong either to their mother (if she is alive) or to a sister (if their mother is dead and a sister exists). Males without a matron ("orphaned") are underprivileged in normal Tycharan society and usually enter roles of servitude.
Tycharan males are not mistreated in normal society but are nevertheless treated differently. In some impolite slang, the word "necessity" is used to refer to a male, due to the need for sexual reproduction to continue their species. A female with designs on having children will always seek a male she finds the most desireable to claim as her consort, but recreational homosexuality is common to both sexes. It is neither encouraged nor discouraged, but simply viewed as a normal option when interacting with social equals.
Even when subservient, males are expected to be strong, competent, and skilled at what they do. Daughters may be favored, but sons are not neglected. When a female wishes to chose a male as consort, she must pay a consort-price to his mother in order to take possession of him. The more desirable the son is viewed as as a mate, the higher the payment he may fetch.
The highest positions of power and leadership are only ever held by females, but on the whole there are no skills nor lines of work that males are forbidden to work in. There will just always be several more highly-ranked females that they report to.
