Description: As a Ruban, Schatten is a dragon-like creature. She is a quadruped with a short neck and a long tail, sleek of muzzle with forward-facing eyes and pointed ears. She is entirely covered with thick fur that is glossy to look and silky to the touch. She also has long, pointed wings, feathered like those of a bird and greasy at the touch, due to oils that keep her breed clean in the swampy waters of their usual habitat. Her Ruban nature is distinguished from other draconics by the small gem growing on her forehead, between her eyes, and the pair of long, thin spikes that grow off each cheekbone.

In color, Schatten is almost entirely black. Her fur and feathers are as dark as a midnight shadow, accentuating the elegant beauty of her graceful body and silky coat. Her mane, which grows in a line along the back of her neck and is more like human hair at the top of her head, is very long. Her bangs tend to slick together into spike-like tufts that gather haphazardly around her face. The eyes that look out from behind this irregular veil are golden-yellow across both iris and sclera, with pupils that are slitted as a cat's are. The only other color on her is the blood red hue of her forehead gem.

Personality: Rare is the Shadow Ruban who does not have the heart of a warrior, for that is the way they are raised, and Schatten is little different. She is a proud lady who will never back down from a fight unless she is certain she is vastly overpowered, enjoying the occasional rush of violence and excitement. She is honorable to an extent, at least enough that she will return the courtesy to anyone who would show her the same--but if they're the sort who'd kick her while she's down, she'll guiltlessly stab them in the back before they have the chance to get a jump on her. She is not a stranger to compassion, however, as she will show kindness to others in trouble--as long as it's not too much trouble.

She does, however, tend to be a loner, at least from her species. The cliffside tunnels she lives in are well populated with undead constructs of her making, but the only other Ruban to share them with her was a pup she took under her wing and apprenticed when she was about 1,300 years old, but who only stayed a short time in comparison to a Ruban's incredible lifespan. Otherwise she tends to only encounter other Rubans when she ventures away from home in order to collect new specimens for her necromancy. She enjoys these encounters when she meets Rubans worth knowing, but is always content to return to her solitary life.

Devoted to necromancy and constantly studying its magics, Schatten is fascinated not by death, but by the cycle of life, death, and reincarnation that is the norm for her world. Though many of her experiments are simply to make strong and unusual constructed creatures, she also seeks to understand the nature of souls: such as what makes a reincarnated Ruban pup different from the long-dead pup she just resurrected and used as part of a flesh golem. It is nothing short of an obsession to her, which explains why an apprentice is the only Ruban company she's ever had--because he was someone she could teach and who could assist her studies, at least for a time.

Biography: The best-kept secret of Schatten's life, so well kept that even she doesn't know it, is that when she and her littermates were born, she alone was a stillbirth--born dead. However, there exist in Rubara many arcane means of bringing the dead back to true life, and one of these was procured by Schatten's parents and used upon her--a jar full of magical flame called a "Phoenix Fire potion". The fire was poured onto her cold body and it brought her back to life, as healthy as any newborn nelp could possibly be. But her parents never told her of the dire beginning of her life, and there was no one who stumbled across the secret.

It is an old superstition, however, that young Rubans brought back to life by Phoenix Fire potions will be inclined to become Necromancers. In Schatten, at least, this seems to be true, for as she grew she became absolutely fascinated by the Necromantic arts. It was not for any sense or morbidness or desire for power, however, but simply because she became enamored of the cycle of reincarnation upon her world. She taught herself from books and scrolls she begged and bought off other local Shadow Rubans, and eventually left home at a young age, feeling crowded by the group her family was a part of.

She made her way to Sector 3 of Rubara, to the shores of the great freshwater sea there, and established a new home in a cave she found worn out of one of the cliffs there. Over time she expanded them, adding tunnels and more caves until she had a veritable hive carved into the sturdy rock. She raised undead companions from kills of her own as well as from dead creatures that washed up on the shore, practicing at every opportunity and devoting herself to her studies. The stronger she got and the more undead she raised, the further she could range away from her lair in search of better prey parts and more advanced books and scrolls. By the time she was an adolescent, she had guardian beasts who could hold their own against everyday Rubans, and so was free to wander all the Sectors of the world of Rubara for weeks and months at a time.

One day one of her excursions led her across the path of a young Ruban pup, half Shadow, half Demonic, and almost entirely mad from the demonic blood coursing his veins. For no real reason but that it seemed a curious thing to do at the time, she took the half-breed in and brought him home with her. His name was, strangely, N-13. Something about her dealings with the pup seemed to tame his chaotic urges and she ended up taking him on as an apprentice. In time they became friends as well, but in only a few score of years he left as she had once left her home, and that was over 1,500 years ago.

Schatten remains as devoted to her work as ever. She delights in assembling Flesh Golems from strange and powerful blends of species to defend her home as she struggles to comprehend the process of reincarnation, but she also enjoys small creatures that are nothing more than companions. Her warren is abuzz with swarms of the tiny, flighty creatures called NiKara, and her dearest pet is a conglomerate Golem called Skippy who is very doglike in behavior. All her creations respond to commands she whistles in various pitches, as well as to verbal instructions.

Inate Abilities:
  • Black Beam: Negative energy, memories, and emotions are condensed into a black beam which, used as an attack, can kill humanoids and leave larger creatures suffering for days afterwards.
  • Black Energy: An ability used to strengthen other negative-energy skills.
  • Create Shadow Companion: The ability to create a three-dimensional, tangible shadow-creature.
  • Create / Destroy Darkness: The ability to create and destroy magical shadows.
  • Create / Destroy Swampwater: The ability to create and destroy foul, swampy water.
  • Dark Ball: A black orb appears before the target, showing them their worst memories and causing them to be mentally re-lived.
  • Dead Call: An undead creature is summoned and remains under the caster's control as long as the caster maintains eye contact on it.
  • Defense Shield: A basic, instinctual magic shield.
  • Glower: A magically-enchanced glare used to disturb and upset an enemy.
  • Mental Yell: A loud mental "shout" used to frighten foes.
  • Murky Stare: Locking eyes with a foe and hypnotizing them like a cobra, the Ruban is able to see the other's memories and can choose one to be warped, although not how.
  • Psycho's Dance: The Ruban's speed increases tenfold, and they can rapidly move about and telekinetically fly without needing to use their wings.
  • Runian Form: The ability to shapeshift into a humanlike form, with very long ears and "birthmarks" where her gem and cheek-spikes usually are.
  • Summon Death Spirit: The ability to summon a Death Spirit.
  • Summon Feral Spirit: The ability to summon a Feral Spirit.
  • Summon War Spirit: The ability to summon a War Spirit.
  • Terrorize: The caster roars, reducing those that hear it into such fear that they feel worthless and incapable. Can even lead to suicidal thoughts and actions.
  • Word: A single, spoke word can be used to kill anything except other draconic creatures. Schatten's chosen word is "farewell".
Spells:
  • Craft Flesh Golem: Used in combination with either Animation spell or either Raising spell, this allows the caster to animate/raise a minion made from multiple corpses that have been pieced together. This spell is useless on its own without an Animation or Raising spell to be paired with.
  • Create Element: Create an element for survival--fire for warmth, wood for a temporary shelter, etc.
  • Graft Flesh: Used to heal undead constructs by grafting skin/flesh/bone from another corpse to the undead in need of repair. Useless on living creatures.
  • Greater Animation: The caster can animate any corpse larger than himself. Like with the Lesser spell, the new undead is obedient but without intelligence, and must be directly commanded to do anything.
  • Greater Raising: The caster can raise an undead minion from any corpse larger than himself. The new undead is as sentient as it was in life, and completely loyal to the caster.
  • Kill Corpse: A spell that "slays" an undead creature by tearing away the spirit that animates it.
  • Lesser Animation: The caster can animate any corpse of his own size or smaller. The new undead is obedient but without intelligence, and must be directly commanded to do anything.
  • Lesser Raising: The caster can raise an undead minion from any corpse of his own size or smaller. The new undead is as sentient as it was in life, and completely loyal to the caster.
  • Rune of Health: Restores health to the caster or target.
  • Sleep: Makes another creature fall asleep for several hours.
  • Undead Conversion: A spell that allows the caster to take control of another necromancer's minion.
