Gara is a tormented child, kidnapped by a Seeker of the Twisted Fate when he ventured outside the sanctity of his birthplace, the Abstract Destiny. He is now the possession of a team of lab-mages who delight in seeing just how far they can push the terigon-child, crafting him into a tool to suit their own inscrutable wants. He lives constantly adrift across the many decks of the Fate, wandering the ever-changing population of the Chosen's Deck most often. He is routinely stalked and attacked, at the lab-mages' direction, by weaker members of the Guardians and given no choice but to fight back or be captured and brought back to the labs, there to be subjected to any number of rituals or tests. There is no place truly safe for him and he spends every waking moment wary and alert, catching sleep as rarely and as briefly as he can: a mere three or four condensed hours after pushing himself to the point of exhaustion. This is obviously not a healthy lifestyle for a young child and it has had adverse effects on his personality, which are compounded by the Rune-Brand burned into his forehead. The Brand is called the Mind-Snare and though it does not control his thoughts, it afflicts him with a deep apathy towards all things outside of himself and his own well-being. Deep inside the child there remains a core of true emotion, of fear and sorrow and desperate loneliness, but it is all but drowned out by not-caring. Exhaustion and external stimuli, like physical pain, can bring this core close enough to the surface for real emotion to bubble out, but otherwise Gara is marked by a bland indifference towards everything around him. He ignores what he can, reacts when he must, and never seeks interaction with any of the hundreds of others who pass through or dwell on the Fate with him. Somewhere between the Brand and his true self, Gara believes he was abandoned by the Destiny and those within it, including his own siblings. The pain of this perceived betrayal compels him to accept the not-caring of his Brand rather than continue to suffer that emotional pain. Life, he has decided, is easier in the grips of not-caring, and besides, the mages will eventually change his Brand so it truly controls his mind, so there's no point in fighting that inevitability. |
