Neither as boisterous as he was as a newborn nor as morose as he was when first abandoned, Dumahar'hashmel has learned the value in putting himself first, not in selfishness, but in the understanding that he cannot help others when he's in need of help, himself. Life is full of mountains to climb, oceans to swim, and memories to make, but he makes them for himself -- while taking others with him to share in the joy. Having learned what it feels like to loose, regain, and recover, he's taken on the role of a counselor for other Destiny inhabitants dealing with grief and loss of the bond-based variety. It may not be a duty he's frequently called to fulfill, for which he is grateful, but he never hesitates to be there when he is needed.

When Dumahar'hashmel first bonded as a kitten, he chose his bond with the assumption and expectation that he could and would solve the man's problems. Unfortunately, but perhaps not unexpectedly, that was too much pressure to put on a child and the bond ended up severing. Dumahar'hashmel was recovered by the Destiny thanks to Doctor Schroeder's clairvoyant awareness of all those Destiny-born, but for a time, all the young hybrid did was wallow in misery over his "failure".

Thankfully, Dumahar's sister Kaunalii convinced him to attend a hatching as a candidate himself, "just to see". There he himself was chosen and bonded to, and it wasn't so much that anything about him needed fixing as he just needed to be loved, and re-bonding proved to be that first stepping-stone he needed to get on a path to learning to love himself again.
