Biosynth 09

Hyrian, Yehenessa, and Wiphyr stayed in Driolo even after the two dragons had reached adulthood and finished their schooling. All three of them found jobs, though more often than not Hyrian would get fired for his eccentricities and have to find a new job just about every month or so. They existed quite contendedly together for quite some time, but one day Wiphyr noticed a change in Yehenessa.

"Hey, Nessa, is something wrong?" he asked, concerned for his friend and wanting to deal with whatever her problem was before Hyrian could get wind of it.

"No, I'm fine," she said, stifling a sigh. Wiphyr gave her a look and she had the good grace to look sheepish. "I don't want Hyrian to know."

"Understood, we both agree the less that upsets him the better."

"Wiphyr, do you- that is, have you ever- well, do you ever regret staying with Hyrian and me?"

"Never. I know I may not be experiencing everything I could, but you both know how much I love staying with you."

"But by staying with us you deny yourself a bond, a mate, a family, doesn't that bother you at all?"

"I'm an Earth dragon, Nessa, we're typically loners anyways so a mate wasn't likely, and you and Hyrian are as much family as I need." Yehenessa still looked vaguely miserable, but didn't seem willing to say anymore. Wiphyr moved about the living room of the dragon-sized apartment the three of them shared and contemplated what she'd said. Suddenly something occurred to him. "Nessa, do you ever regret bonding Hyrian?"

"No! Never! I love Hyrian! I just-"

"Spit it out, Nessa, better to get it off your chest."

Yehenessa sighed, opening and closing her mouth several times before she managed to get the words out. "I just realized recently that being bonded to Hyrian with all his child-like innocence means I'll likely...never be a mother."

"Sure you can, Nessa, Hyrian won't stop you from finding a mate..." Wiphyr trailed off as his brain suddenly made the connection Yehenessa had hinted at without actually saying. "Oh, you want to have Hyrian's children, don't you?"

Yehenessa nodded miserably. They both knew Hyrian was infinitely fond of both of them and though the bond tied him closer to Yehenessa than to Wiphyr they both understood that Hyrian would never mature the way they had. He was sweet and the bond let Yehenessa into the workings of his mind which sadly only endeared him to her all the more, but he hadn't a romantic thought in his head and Yehenessa didn't want to bring that sort of complication between them. Wiphyr gave her an understanding look then brightened as something occurred to him.

"Wait, what about that Abstract Destiny place up on Star City? Have you heard about that?"

Yehenessa nodded slowly, "Yeah, I've heard of it, but how can that help me? If I sponsored a hatchling from there it would still mean bringing another dragon into our lives and we both know Hyrian can't handle that."

"But what if you talk to Hyrian about it and actually have them synth your genes? Then Hyrian can stay pleasantly in the dark about the romantic side of things, you'll be able to enjoy being a mother, and you know Hyrian won't mind bringing your children into our lives, we'll just have to be careful about how we do it."

Yehenessa brightened, "You know, that might actually work!"

Wiphyr nodded, glad he could help his friend, a draconic grin splitting his face to see her happier.

Later that day once Hyrian was home from work Yehenessa talked to him about it. "Yehenessa wants to have babies?"

"Yes Hyrian, but they'd be your babies too. The Abstract Destiny could synth our genes together to produce babies for us. What do you think?"

"We could keep three of them?" Hyrian asked, his Goprin brow tilting in suspicion as he turned to look at Wiphyr who usually delighted in torturing Hyrian with reference to less than perfect numbers.

Yehenessa smiled brightly and nodded her head. "I'm sure we could work something out with them. Is that okay?"

Hyrian considered it for a while, his tail beating a steady rhythm of threes on the floor behind where he sat. Finally he nodded his head three times. "Yes, Hyrian likes this idea. Hyrian is perfect so Hyrian should spread his perfect genes, even if Yehenessa isn't as perfect as Hyrian she will do, and Wiphyr should contribute as well, Hyrian's perfect three children should have three perfect parents."

Wiphyr and Yehenessa both blinked in surprise but Hyrian merely blinked guilelessly back at them and they exchanged looks. Wiphyr found his voice first and gave Yehenessa a hesitant look. "Is that alright with you, Nessa?"

Yehenessa smiled, her initial shock wearing off. "Yeah, Hyrian's right, that's perfect. We'll finally manage to bind you to us genetically if not mentally, Wiphyr!"

They all laughed and the next day they headed to the Abstract Destiny to apply for their Synth. As they left Yehenessa allowed Hyrian and Wiphyr to get ahead of her and pulled Dr. Schroeder aside. "I'm sure you noticed that Hyrian isn't exactly 'normal'. Wiphyr and I love him dearly but if you have any control over it could you try to decrease the chance that Hyrian's children with have the same...eccentricities? Hyrian's happy enough, but I don't want the bonders and sponsors to be saddled with more than they can handle..."

"Personality can be very difficult to control, my dear," he replied with an understanding smile, "but I'll certainly see what I can do. We'll make sure we only bring in suitably prepared bonders and sponsors as well."

Yehenessa looked vastly relieved and scampered off after the fathers of her future children. Now that everything was under control she had but to wait until Dr. Schroeder could fit their Synth into his schedule. Somehow the waiting seemed worse than thinking she'd never have children, but she took a deep breath and plastered a smile on her face. There was no sense in worrying Hyrian after all, as that was likely to send him into a frenzy of 'perfection in threes' that would leave her and Wiphyr with their hands full for quite some time trying to calm him down. Still, waiting would be agony!
