Off Topic. -- College Applications?

Post by Naeodin »

My UCAS form is due tomorrow, I've decided to apply online and I was wondering about everyone else. We've got such a diverse group of people due to both age and nationality (I wish I could mention something about sanity as well... except we're ALL crazy!! AAaaahhh!) and I was wondering if many others were going through this now as well?

Are you? Where are you applying? What are you applying for?

Can't help you there......I'm not old enough yet. I'm planning to go to OSU (Oklahoma State University) and take meteorology, among other things.

X3 1st year, Alberta College of Art and Design, hopeful Character Design major = the awesome. X333 I /would/ have been 3rd year at the University of Alberta, general sciences (most likely going into field biology or something that involved evolution) but it wasn't working out at all for me. Frankly, I'm happier now then I was before. XD Goes to show that waiting and investigating other options can be so worth it!

Be glad you discovered it before you got a degree and a job in your field Dray! Going back to school after being out for four years just sucks...

Of course working two jobs on top of going to school isn't exactly making things any easier...heh...

*Hopefully* going to NC State to major in veterinary medicine. Though after taking massive amounts of biology last year I was thinking of majoring in plain biology and teaching it... or teaching Animal Science. Or going into the Horticulture field.
...I can't decide anymore - -;;;

Ehe, it's been so LONG ago that I can barely remember...back in '90 (I bet some of you were just starting school then *snerk*). Didn't make it past the first semester, though, that's when I found out I needed glasses, and by the time I got them, couldn't catch up on my art classes.

Warning, if you drop out, you might end up working for the university. *chuckle*

ooh college is fun. except for when you want to shoot yourself from the amaxing onslaught of homework. I am a sophomore (second year) now, although I'm having a rather odd semester because I changed all my classes a third of the way through so I'm in a freshman and a junior class at the moment :roll: But yeah. I only applied to two colleges, university of colorado and colorado school of mines. I had intended to apply for more but when I got accepted to CU I decided to go here. I started out in aerospace engineering but I switched over to computer science (after much head bashing and traumatizing mental anguish). I still plan to work in the aerospace industry, but now I'm a computery rocket geek. But yes college is really awesome it's a lot different than high school everyone's a lot more mature, and you really "Find yourself" as cheesey as it sounds. My room mate enjoys going out with a lot of different guys but I found my true love on the very first day and I won't give him up for anything *glomps him* ... so yes it's about more than just classes. But don't neglect classes, either. Doing so is very, very, very bad. And trust me as someone who knows, it's VERY tempting to just never go to class first year, but still show up to lecture no matter how pointless it seems or how early in the morning it is, you will be glad you did later. And thus concludes Astra's collegey rant.

Colleges...

*snarls, hisses and spits in the corner*

*slash slash*

( -- )

I really can't stand applications of any kind. Maybe it's like procrastinating and impatient...ing's worse nightmare all in one.

I'm presently enrolled as a freshman at ISU (Indiana State University), majoring in art. Just going there for a year while I get more stuff in order, like getting my license and some basics and saving money once I get a new job. >>;;

Haven't decided where I'm going to go next year, been considering IU (Indiana University--it's in Bloomington, and is better quality.) and a variety of other places. Money is really a major problem for me. >_< I'd love to major in Illustration or something, I haven't decided, but if it doesn't work out I figure I'll go back for my MA after I get my BA and become an art professor.

At least now I have some clue how the system works. 0.o Feeling like it's almost time to get out on my own, though...

>_> It's definitely nice to be away, but then you've got to consider all the costs of living, feeding yourself, keeping everything clean on a regular basis without having anyone to nag you, fellow apartment/residence residents... but yar. XD *Babble* It's nice to be away from home. Feels less restrictive out here. *nod*

Let me tell you from experience...get out on your own! You'll do so much growing and changing once you do. I /really/ changed when I left for college because I didn't have anyone to rely on but myself!

Right now the only thing that would make me move back home would be if I just couldn't afford living on my own anymore...and if that happened you can bet your boots I'd be working my tail off to get out of the house again! *L* I love my mom, but I need my space! And besides...my mom and I would be fighting for the computer all the time...heh...

Wish my mother understood that, she's positive I'll die/get robbed/assaulted/other bad stuff once I move out as I'm "ignorant". Only way that'll change is by experience. :roll: Needless to say she's not taking that idea very well, as at the end of this school term I'm out no matter what. *Wonders if he'll even be able to afford both a roof and food, much less a net connection...*

Ahem, sorry for the slight hijack, but needed to vent a little.

@Wanderer - Heh, my parents were against me moving out at first, too. I wasn't going to college at the time, I just needed to get out cause.. well.. they were pestering me all the time to go to college >_>

They helped me move into my first place, and after we'd all unloaded the car, they basically said, "Okay, pack everything back up, we're taking you home." XD

Now, almost two years later, I am so happy that I didn't give up and go back home with them. I've learned and experienced so much more than I would have if I were still all nestled in with my parents. Yes, I've made mistakes, and some of them were really stupid ones, but there's nothing like screwing up to help you learn stuff ^__^

.. er yeah, sorry for the further thread hijacking!

@Skysong - That pretty much sums up whst I try telling her but she does'nt listen. Worst thing is she knows what buttons to push, ended up ranting to Myst last time she got on my case...*sighs* Anyway, I know I'll make mistakes, but thats part of what makes life living after all. Still have to figure out where I'll go though....any suggestions?

Parents always know which buttons to push - that's their job XD

I'm not sure of your situation or what the place (city? town? countryside?) that you live is like, so I'm not sure of how much advice I can give ^_^;

Well, if you have to have roomates, make sure you're comfortable with the person (or people) who's going to be your roomate. I made the mistake of taking in a roomate when I was desperate to find someone to fill the two rooms that I had available, and it was the creepiest, most uncomfortable 2 months ever until I finally moved out.

Try to find a place where utilities are included in the rent. Nothing like receiving an unexpectedly high heating bill (ick)! En suite laundry is also spectacular, and beats lugging clothes to the laundrymat anyday (especially when you have to take them on the bus, like I had to).

When you're actually looking for a place, try talking to everyone that you know. The last two places that I lived were because I'd let my friends know that I was looking for a place to live, and they happened to have rooms available.

In that vein, if you're going to be living with friends, make sure that they're aware of and respect your personal space and boundaries. The two times I lived with friends, it worked out nicely because we were all aware that there were times when we just needed to be by ourselves and didn't need to socialize all the time - if you needed to sit on the couch and watch TV and not interact with anyone, you could do so. I've heard some horror stories of people living with their friends..

If nobody you know knows of anything available, another good way to find a place is to take a walk in the area you're interested in living in. Apparently a lot of places don't take out ads in the paper when there's a rental available, and so the best way to find all the available places is to look around for 'For Rent' signs.

Also, be aware of your rights as a renter, and what your landlord can and can't do. These rights will differ from place to place, but it's good to know them. And if you sign a lease, make sure to read it very carefully - you don't want to get evicted because you'd skipped over something important on the lease.

Er yeah.. I've had lots of good and bad experiences living away from home, so just ask if you need anymore XD

((heh, I've seen worse thread hijacking. At least this has something to do with the original post!))

And my advice is... hoard money XD I mean, I know that sounds pretty obvious, but even if you start a little box or container and faithfully drop your pocket change into it, or drop a couple of dollars in per week and promise yourself not to touch them, it will add up, and surprisingly quickly too. If you have family like mine, hide the money. Go to the bank and start your own bank account, or go to a different bank and start another one if their interest rate is better. (ING direct - http://home.ingdirect.com/ - has CD accounts with RIDICULOUSLY huge interest rates)

The reason why I say hide the money... basically, my mother threw a huge fit in a Washington Mutual branch once and literally got our accounts cancelled... even though I had nothing to do with her freak-out, my account was tied to hers, and they cancelled MY account too. When we went to Wells Fargo to make accounts there, my mother and sister were with me, and they put themselves as FULL SIGNERS on my account. Basically that means they have every bit as much power as I do over *MY* money. They can go in at any time and withdraw money from my account, and they don't need me to be present and they don't need my permission. One time my mother withdrew $9,000 from my account and didn't tell me, and I literally did not know about it until I got my bank statement a few weeks later. She's been withdrawing money from my account again lately to finance different crap, such as my dad's treatments... I've gone from having $27,000 to having barely above $10,000. Seeing as that money was supposed to support me when I move out finally, I'm now trapped in my house even LONGER since I have to wait for my mom to pay me back. Which she keeps saying "I don't have the money to pay you back right now, dear" and then she goes and buys another bit of furniture or some crap >_< I can't even remove my mother and sister from my account without THEIR permission... they'd literally have to go into the bank WITH me and sign themselves off of my account... which believe me, they'd never do. I'd get screamed at for a day straight... "Why do you want us off your account? Why are you sneaking around like this? Are you planning on running away??" (I didn't know 23-year-olds "ran away", I thought they "moved out"...)

...er, sorry for the off-topic vent of my own XD I know not everyone has a weird family like mine, but it's just a warning, protect your money and make sure it's YOURS, free and clear ;}

>< Oh man, Lakota, that's an awful situation right there. I'd say it's worth getting screamed at a bit to make sure your mom doesn't pull crap like taking out so much money without permission or anything -- just take all your money out of that account and start yourself a new one somewhere else. oO That is just... /not right/ that they do that to you.

@Skysong - Countryside, though in the middle of a forest would be more accurate. Kinda goes with being in Northern WI. Still have some good advice, and I'll be certian to have more questions as time goes on.

@Lakota - Thats horrible. I'd second Jkatkina's advice to pull the money out and start a seperate account. Secondly, if you got an address and its not too far I know where to get a nice baseball bat....

And already have my own account, though not sure if I have enough in it yet. Expecially as I'll have even less after the trip to Toronto come Nov 25. I'll be sure to check out that CD idea when I get home though...
