Firebird Dragon info

Post by Shard »

For birthday giveaways and other such things! Here's reference for the Firebird dragons.

Powers:
Fire Control - over local fires up to around 100 yards, from a spark to a blazing building in strength, can be manipulated to be hotter, cooler, extinguish completely or blaze up strongly
Flame Creation - can cause a magical flame to erupt even in very damp conditions though not 'wet' and much more easily when dry
Flame Manipulation - flames created by this dragon can be manipulated into shapes and various sizes from a match-head to its own full size
Fire Immunity - dragon is immune to flames in general, though may sport a weakness to a particular kind or magic type
Immolation - can in self defense suddenly burst into extremely hot flames up to 2 feet away from its body, is unharmed by this process itself

Verbal speech - can learn basically any verbal language given time and a teacher.

FireSong - can home in on any other strong fire-magic type of creature, from several miles away, 'hears' their blood calling. Also, can send out a specific signature of its own song.

Size: around 12 feet at shoulder

Lifespan: egg - from 2 months to 2 years gestation in egg; young - flightless but gains feathers and flames up to around age 20; fledge - true flight and full magical abilities after age 20, lasts a long time; aged - molts last longer and less flame magic around age 400; death comes after around 425-450 years if well cared for. If not, 400.

Features:
fire molting - this dragon will 'molt' and lose its feathers and flames around once every ten years or so. this leaves it flightless and vulnerable to physical attacks as it cannot properly immolate but it is still immune to most fire sources. This molt lasts up to a month, when their feathers grow back fully and they can fly once more. Generally the dragon will remain in its heat source home for the full duration, shortly before, and several weeks after while it regains its flight strength.

hot requirement - this breed requires warm through brilliantly hot living arrangements. while it can leave those environs it must sleep or lounge around in hot, dry conditions such as volcanic areas, geothermal vents, deserts, the sun, perhaps even radioactive waste (... don't even start on what bale-versions might need. ogod I said it.) to regain their strength. They do not need to eat, they literally feed slowly and magically on heat. Doesn't stop them from having breakfast of a rabbit or deer, but they don't need it.

breeding restrictions - for a minimum of 4 generations, NO cold based breeding can occur with this dragon type as its founder. after 4 it's still not a great idea. Ice, cold, and water types need not apply. (steam, however, might be okay; and those who have both elements or include flame/heat somehow would be exempt or reduce the number of generations required). These dragons can lay up to a dozen eggs, and can breed with multiple partners in one breeding cycle. Breeding cycles can last up to two years, and the eggs themselves MAY take different times to hatch based on the heat or surroundings (generally, hotter = faster). Any different breed that sires eggs with a firebird dragon are a crapshoot of when they'd hatch. Females will be able to lay once every 12-20 years, as they take care of young and are not inclined to remain 'eggbound' constantly for any length of time, so there will generally be a period of 20-ish years between each *typical* breeding.

NOT telepathic - these breeds rely upon visual and audio cues for communication and have never needed to become telepathic. That doesn't mean that subsequent crossbreeds will be dead-minds, but they will stand a chance of only having verbal communication skills instead of psionic ones.

NOT teleporters - however, they can travel up to four times (two destinations there and back, or...) in their lives, to another destination by "burning up" and "resparking" in a new body no matter how far distant (even other dimensions/genres/nexus places). They normally travel by flight, and are obviously experts at creating thermals to glide upon which they can keep up for days, or even weeks at a time.

Bonding/Pairing - they do not require bonds, and would prefer other dragons or magical beings if they must. They would never shun a bond, though, they are very social and consider bonds of other dragons to be perfectly normal. Breeding pairs do not necessarily bond, and bonds do not need to breed to maintain a relationship if they are appropriately gendered. they will generally not keep one mate more than a few times in their life, and will seek out more and more distant dragons for breeding as their time goes on. Females maintain fertility until they become Aged.

..... I think that covers it. *whew*
