Come on, how many of us made it? Huh, huh? *pokes Yakima, Dray, and JKat, then eyes the rest of the Nexus lurkers* WEEEEEELLLLL?

Because I did! If there's interest, I might hunt down some of my unfinished sketches and make a NaNo!Winner!Dragon, though it'll have to wait until I finish my Operation Blinking Mirror submission, because OHLORDTHAT'SDUEINTENDAYSANDIONLYHAVEASKETCHOHLORD~!

Hahahaha, congrats! I'm maybe a third through the storyline, and i don't really have a story so much as a collection of scenes that kinda fit together. I need looooooots of glue and even more writing, but i'm going to put it down for a bit. Not just because i have other things thah need doing, but because through writing it some stuff came up that i need to take some time to flesh out properly.

I'm pretty far ahead as normal for me, but also as normal for me, real life is already conspiring against me lol.

I have commitments to do things for a group, but then also, my freaking website host needed to be moved AND that means no email until it gets reset at its new place... ugh. That said, I'm already at 35k, well ahead of normal anyway. The story I'm doing pretty much writes itself, since it's a "road trip" that involves many, many different characters from a huge variety of worlds (most of which are dragon-related in some way...).

LOL hell I should put in a bit with the 'left out dragons', since among the teams on the road race, every one of them has at LEAST one rider, usually more.

I've basically reached the point where I need to sit down and codify the rules that the story runs by, because I just kept writing on last year's story, so it's got a little over 100k words, and it's an interesting mishmash of follow-this-rule-no-wait-don't. Also, since it's basically the story of Akelara, I need to step back and redefine a lot of bits of it, in order to not be blatantly yoinking some people's work from them if I end up trying to publish this.

got mine done a couple days before the end, though that's saying only that I reached slightly over 50k, not that the story's done. :)

Hah! Yeah, I switched gears from writing Akelara's story. I'm still trying to figure out all the rules that the Myrsilk follow and reasons and also trying to figure out how to not make the story suck. =P So I took my Devyrs, built a real world for them with a real culture and such, and said "Okay, this is now my story that I'm working on. Flik, tell me your history!"

... Apparently, Flik's people practice infanticide. I have wonderful people.

Yeah. It's a bit... yeah. I mean, there's a legit (from their culture's perspective) reason for it, but it's still infanticide. And having to sit down and write as your main char's parents go ".... We should kill him. It would be a kindness." "Yeah. Yeah we should." "........" "...." "We're not going to, are we?" "... We'll just say he was born a few minutes later." "All the stories say that's a bad thing and leads to Bad Things." "... We'll just send him off to be a soldier before he becomes an adult."

.... reducing that scene down to that exchange of dialogue makes me really realize exactly how illogical Flik's parents were being. Like wow. Everything they've heard, and been taught, and know for a fact (Flik's country of birth has a law against allowing a Wild Star to live, which is what Flik is, and breaking that law, if you're discovered, means a very painful, messy death. Because Wild Stars bring about uncertainty and disrupt the fairly rigid social order that the Empire is built upon.) tells them that keeping him alive is Bad, and yet they still do it. Huh. Oh well,

Well in that regard: have they ever SEEN one? Or is this just 'so legendary' that no one's really got anything other than stories to go on? Because I can totally see doing that if it's not pressing and obvious.

They've never seen one. First off, Wild Stars are actually comets, and there are only nine that they acknowledge (though there are a lot more, they just lump them all together into specific categories -- "This is the Wild Star of Lightning, that one's the Wild Star of Fire" etc) so even with multiple comets falling under the label of each Wild Star, they're not THAT common. Secondly, any Wild Star born in any city, not just a border village like Flik was born in (where they still practice the mother and father going off into the wilds into a defendable location to give birth alone), is accompanied by a state sanctioned healer that arranges "birth accidents" to any kid that is unlucky enough to be born when a Wild Star is in the sky. And if the mother protests, they "die of complications". And the healer has to sign their name to the birth certificate of any kid they watch being born, and if it turns out they let a Wild Star live? Well. They die. Consequences!

But yeah, on the edge of the Empire like that? The nearest city is two day's flight away, and it's barely large enough to have one healer who's usually too busy to make rounds for birthings in the little villages nearby. They're pretty divorced from the might of the Empire and only have old wives tales to go off of.

I am, sadly, not doing NaNo this year...my brain is fried and i can't conentrate on anything latley in a creative sense (yes, i will admit it...a game has me very distracted). But I really don't have the right enviroment to write and have no hook or whatever to start either my dragon one or re-write my one from last year.

So...

Good luck you two! I'll be the one sleeping in the corner with the tablet-laptop she bought for writing and never uses now. lol >.<

heheh, well if it's warm :D

I just passed 15k and I'm waiting on a specific piece of information to come at me from facebook sources so I can write up a little more about one team in my race. Since it's got so many characters from my past and many of those were based on people in my school classes, a group of the characters will be piled into this old car that we used to drive around in during lunch period in high school. We had open campus, it was a massive car, but I just cannot for the life of me remember what exactly it was. Huge, ugly, brown thing, 'classic' according to some sources, but lol fugly as hell. Our tallest friend could lay down across the entire back seat, that's why I know it'll make a perfect "10 person team" car. We could actually FIT 10 people in it, in high school.
