Age of Fire by EE Knight

Post by weyrwomanrhiannon »

Has anyone else read these books? I just finished the first one in the series Dragon Champion. I really thoroughly enjoyed it especially since the main characters are the dragons themselves. I really like the dragonlore he created as well. All females are green for starters. Males come in bronze, copper, black, gold, blue, white, sIlver, red, and gray. The grays are unique in that they are scaleless. All other dragons must consume metal to grow scales. This explains the hoarding and lust for gold and other precious metals. Also, they aren't born with their wings. Their wings are cased until they begin to mature and then eventually spring from their backs. In the wild, pairs mate for life as far as I have been able to gather from the first book. As soon as the eggs hatch the males begin to try and kill each other leaving one the clutch champion. Clutches are small less than ten eggs. One of the more interesting parts of the lore is that the dragons cannot only communicate telepathically like Pernese dragons but also send memories. They have their own spoken language as well and most also learn to speak the common hominid tongue of Parl.

Anyway, I found the book really interesting and I'm excited to read the next one in the series.

Yes, I started the series around when the third book came out, I think? And picked up the others from the library as they came out. It is a really good dragon-centric story, though the third book is probably my favorite, and I think it declines (slightly) in quality from there. Not really a fan of how the author handled certain Important Events, but there are other issues brought up that are really intriguing, so it evens out. XD Definitely one I would recommend to read.
Darkling Dawn: Fauna Frenzy Open to candidates; flights open to males/females; rukel eggs/breedings available.
Drockh-Tallahn Castle: 3 eggs, 2 available. Females and males needed.
Sgiath Wolfkeep: 7 pups available
Sedona Weyr: 12 eggs, Deadline March 8. Chasers and a female needed.

I loved the entire series. I even recommended them to my husband who isn't as much of a dragon person as I am and he thoroughly enjoyed them as well. A very interesting take on dragons and I /loved/ that they're written from the dragons' perspectives. :)

Excellent. I'm glad other people have read this awesome series. I'm really excited to read what happen to the copper and Wistala as well as the continuation of Auron's storyline. I can find the second book fairly cheap on ebay brand new. I'm a book snob and don't like to buy used at least not paperbacks. I don't like to break the spines on my books. LOL The third one I'm going to have to pay full price for no matter what it seems. Would it matter if I read that one before I read the second one?

This could be really interesting as an adoptable as well. Malk's dragons on chickensmoothie are based on Knight's dragons.

I can't remember exactly, but you should be able to read the third before the second without missing anything vital. The later books go on in chronological order from there, though, so you'll want to read four and on in order.

Well, I've just about finished the second book, and I must say... I LOVE it. These are so well written and to be honest it's a nice change from reading Todd's butchering of Pern. I can't wait to dig into the third one, and I'm so glad I went ahead and bought 3 and 4. I hope 5 and 6 will be as well done.

Heh, while I'll probaly still read Todd's Pern version, i agree they aren't as good as his mothers but I don't expect them to be...the only cool thing he did with those books was to give a reason behind those rooms in benden weyr that were never explained by his mother. Other than that, he's just using a plot line that his mother had with all that damn time jumping...*sighs* (the only other cool thing is that Talor Cliff was set in the third Pass, which those books are so...in an alternate dimension K'man will have impressed Mixuith and M'len to Jesioth and...yeah...)

Then again, i'm not one to really bitch about things like that...I mean, can you imagine what some people would say about my 'version' of Pern at Falas with the FPGC changing dragon colors and Elves running around weilding necromancy? :D Guess that's why I don't complain much. ha

I've read all of Todd's works (cause hey it's Pern) and it's all of the timing that drives me batty. I'm not half as bothered by the other canon-breaking points as I am by his gratuitous use of timing.

However, the Age of Fire books... very cool and not so self-contradicting. It's a really refreshing change. I should be starting the third book this evening.

Hey, yeah, the timing and Fiona really annoy me. I liked the gold rider who lost her dragon, but Fiona needs to die a horrible death...*coughs* And the whole timing-it thing reminds me I need to figure out this plot for Dark Moon and get a timeline going...*smacks Philippe who is not affected by timing-it because he's an elf so he happily does it all the time* :P

I hate Lorana. She not only hears all dragons but she can feel them too. I mean come on. That's beyond far-fetched. I don't care for Fiona either. I won't even go into what happens in Dragon's Time. I'm not sure I can read another one of his books, but I suppose I will simply because it's the only link to Pern left.

Heh, true. Forgot about that. But I liked her in the beginning. I think the only reason I really would continue reading is to figure out how they fix the low dragon population...but I'm waiting for it to be cheeper than $10...or even $7. I think the last one I read Lorana just jumped back in time and both were pregnant...so i'm behind. heh

So, umm, having just finished the last book of the Age of Fire series, I would honestly suggest you might want to stop after the fourth book and pretend the last two never happened, because wow, did it go downhill fast. The fifth isn't too bad except for an abrupt and open ending, but the sixth is kinda terrible and looks like it wasn't edited at all, plus makes little sense. Yikes. If you do read the fifth and sixth books, I recommend trying to get them from a library rather than buying them.

Thanks for the warning, Kitsuneko. I'll try to keep that in mind. I just started Dragon Outcast last night. I hope I won't be too disappointed.

Honestly, Dragon Outcast is my favorite of the series. ^^ And the fourth is still pretty good too.

I'm enjoying it a lot. It moves a lot faster than the others. Plus it helps that there are a lot more dragons.

EDIT: Just finished it. Oh my gosh, so good! I think it's my favorite so far. I'm really glad I read them in order though cause it gives the story a much more complete picture.
