Falas Weyr: No, I'm not dead...lookie! :P

Post by Yakima »

Dray and Star know I've been working on this but I decided to let everyone else have a peak...and to give input.

http://www.falas-weyr.wolf-mage.com/v6/

This is the new version of the Weyr I've been working on (please ignore the first page. I need to fix coding...look at fighting wings & the Rising mist wing, and the hatching sands). I set out with a few goals in mind and would like your opinions, thus far.

1. i wanted to make some information more easily, and quickly accessable; ie current candidates, flights, updates, and wing/weyr population and stats.
2. cleaner layout with correct coding/css. :P
3. make a tempalte that can easily be altered for all my agencies.
4. Make it pretty; yet simple and not over crowded.

Feel free to put in your input. I'm slowly putzing around with this and do like the results thus far. (Oh, the image on the hatching sands is temporrary...its a place older for something I have burning in the back of my mind. :) )

Progress, hoorah! So far so good! I have a couple of things to mention that I noticed:

-Your navigation bar should be one to three pixels taller, as the 'y' and 'g' in weyrbowl and fighting wings links are cut off when hovered over.
-Since the rest of your layout uses gradients, I think that making your CSS dropshadow blurred would fit better than the sharp outline. I've found one tutorial on how to do it amongst the other tips in this link, and their 'Example B' box is mostly what I mean, save the orientation of the shadow is backwards. X3
-"K'man and J'ren are both Flightleaders - K'man's flight will fly with Forth." Should 'Forth' be 'Fort'? (I know, not a layout nitpick, but I see spelling errors on your website all the time and even though the layout looks really nice, a single typo is all it takes to throw someone for a loop and to start looking for other errors. It's a really good idea to triple-check the writing or ask someone else to read through and report spelling errors so that your site looks top notch!)
-Similarly, I think that you should indicate your switch from in character writing about the wings to your out of character talk about not wanting to between other people's dragons with some kind of visual cue: a smaller font, a divider, a div box of a different colour or with a border around it -- just give the reader a moment to adjust to the fact that 'I' and 'I'm' is suddenly getting thrown into the mix.
-Overall, the fighting wings page has a lot of info on it right away, and I'm not sure what I should be looking at first. In the end, I glanced at both sides, thought, 'huh, neat,' and mostly ignored them for the main article. If there's anything you want us to know first, using some tricks of hierarchy would better accomplish that goal: the 'fighting wings' header could be even a little bigger, as I find it's not quite big enough to immediately separate it from the headers on either side bar.
-The census information on the right hand side is really interesting, but there is something about it being bumped up there with the fighting wings information that this page is supposed to be mainly about that is odd to me. This isn't something that has to be implemented or anything, but it would be interesting if that right hand bar served as a small randomized box of information pertinent to that particular page: the population information could be moved to the Weyrbowl, since it seems to me to be general information about the Weyr as a whole. In its place, a header like 'random fighting wing facts' could show various information in bite-sized chunks like one or two sentences: when which wings were formed, who is the most experienced Wing Leader, who flew the longest flight, which wing has had the least injuries, which wing supports what colours, etc. Each time a person refreshed the page, another little bit of information would pop up. Not vital to the understanding of Falas Weyr, but another layer of interaction and understanding. :3

-For the Rising Mist wing's page, I like it so far! The only thing that could use nitpicking is the fact that the dragon info is all right-aligned, so I think that having the header, 'DRAGON', should be right-aligned as well just to ensure that it sticks over the heaviest looking part of that column. I'd love to see some random facts about each individual wing, though I can see how that would be a lot of work. X3

-Is K'man's page a finished example of the template that you're planning on using? If so, I'm wondering why the content box is so narrow. Was it supposed to fit into a smaller space? Right now it's opening in a new tab, so I'm getting half a box with a lot of content, and half a darker coloured, empty space. I find the center-aligned information to be offputting, especially in a left-aligned content box. I think it would look better if the information were left-aligned. I also think that since the dragon's images are not sunk into his information, K'man's image should not be right-aligned with the beginning of his stats table. Then again, it might look nicer if all of his information was left aligned because then it wouldn't seem like his image is nudging the information out of sync with the stuff lower down.

-The hatching sands page is looking great! I quickly understand what flight/candidate side info is getting at, and the filler image seems like a pretty good idea. It's an excellent hierarchical device. The only problem is, again, spelling errors that could be quickly fixed by editing the content!

Hope that all is helpful! The bulk of it looks really awesome. XD I want to snag some of your styles to integrate into my boring old site, man. This is coming along very nicely!

THanks dray. I like the layout for the most part but i'm not 100% satisfied with some of it; like some of the things you mentioned. lol I like the cream look (because it fits with sand...which Falas has a lot of ha). I will be playing with colors and whatnot.

I can try moving the census information to the main page. I only had the dragon-related stuff there. There is more, more weyrfolk oriented, that was going to be in the Lower Caverns. :) We will see. I agree it's cluttered and that's probably why that page has been bothering me. lol

K'man's page is still the old one. I haven't got to redoing that and no, I don't like that idea. I'll be starting over with it eventually. hehee And all the css for that page was deleted so it has no styling because I intend to start over again with that.

As for spelling errors, i haven't got around to fixing that yet. But I have a spell check available so I intend to run it through that and whatnot...when I'm done fiddling with layout most likley. :)

I will try to lurk in chat, too. I did say I would help you with your layouts, after all. lol

Oh I love the hatching sands page! Having the flights, the candidates and the current clutches up on the same page is wonderfully useful.

Heehee, thanks Delyar. That, and a few other things, that is my favorite part about this layout. Actually, im just in love with me side-links. :P *pets her gradients*

No problem, Dray. I'll keep lurking. I've changed a few design elements since then and I have a good idea for the rider pages. However, I am not happy with tables and want to find a different design idea for them. Something simple to match the rest of the layout. *pokes it...then beats on it with a hammer* Yeah, we're not getting along atm...grrr.

http://www.falas-weyr.wolf-mage.com/v6/ <-- Updated!

I think I'm getting somewhere with this! Here is what is done.

1.Got the main page working right. Will be moving Weyr census to the Weyr Statistics page when I create it. Also will be rendering (hopefully) my really, super old arial view of the Weyr (which I need to locate) in illustartor so that it kinda has this look to it: http://image.shutterstock.com/display_p ... 586200.jpg or http://www.vectorjungle.com/wp-content/ ... ch_day.jpg. Actually, most of the main pages (ie hatching grounds, wings main, lower caverns, ect) will be getting images rendered like that. I just...have to draw and sit down to start them. heh

2. Hatching Page should be, more or less, in working and up-to-date order, including where I left off before.

3. Candidate form IS functional! :P I do need to fix the css selectors on that page yet...though the form is what I wanted it to be. (very proud of my buttons...though css is evil and does not seem to want to let me change the a tag so it's a paragraph and tricky to click...grrr)

4. Wings are pretty much how I think I want them, except the image and spell check (i promise, dray I WILL do that before final launch...if it ever gets to final launch for once...). Rising Mist wing works and I have the table css behaving! yay!

5. Lower Caverns...have not yet tackled...

6. Records are started! and Clutches 1-5 of the current Pass are correctly styled....though i need to fix my html coding. lol Let me know if things are not clear enough or whatever...

7. K'man's page is now an almost complete template! http://www.falas-weyr.wolf-mage.com/v6/rider/kman.html AND, i find the page I kept wanting to use as inspriation: http://tirragen.net/ruine/ryukki/ was what was in my mind when i set out to start this so I ended up using it as inspriation. Saeri's page layout...loved the simplicity of it though I tried to keep my old style that I am still attached to. lol Though, I loved her pedigree table and mimiced it because it rocks! Though, I added a few twists (well, curves, rather) to it so it would match my layout.

I think that is it. If there is any comments you have ( *hands dray a notepad* heehee) please let me know. Their are some things I'm still fiddling with but other than that I'm probably going to start adding the rest of the pages...well, and the lower caverns page. lol

completely wiped from the late night flight, just wanted to say that K'man's page is wicked awesome. :)

I still think a very pale shade of cream on the left-hand column would not go awry, but good work so far!

FGPC has been attacked!

No, not my aliens or xeno dragons...it was attacked by me. I have to say, I think I may have to go back and revisit the Falas Weyr site...this turned out much cleaner and neater. :P

http://www.fgpc-weyrhall.wolf-mage.com/v3/

I didn't uplodad the rider images, or the dragons because it's still got a lot of Falas information stuck on it. :P

Yes, Im having fun changing stuff on you guys again. :P Wheeee! (and I need to go to sleep...bad...)

Huh, looks a lot like those 'Top 5 [insert witty moments/characters/things here]' sites. I think it looks pretty neat on a brief glimpsin' at, though the logo font is nigh upon unreadable. Liking the little images on the sidebars for genders and incubators!

heh...never head of those sites. It's a mesh of several inspriational locations and ideas, actually. :P I'll try to find a different font...*pouts* I was afraid it was going to be a readable problem. :P

I have also found my problem and why none of my sites were ever finished...i like designing not putting all the information into it. lol *facepalms* :P

Hm, I've got a few that are updated/adults on my old Win98 laptop, which has no internet or USB capability. It only has a really old, temperamental external cd burner and a floppy drive (haha)! But I can't confirm that they made it online, though a few from the archival websites show pages with missing images, or just aren't up-to-date stage-wise. At least some of those are listed at Falas as abandoned or deceased. Need to confirm how things stand with Yakima.

Oh, since I'm working on Pernese, I need to make a note to repage the ones from Dragonhope for your records. :)

*drops in for a sec*

One, very sorry about the page thing. I've been trying to find a new host that will allow more space and not eat my wallet's contents too much but no such luck. I wasn't paying for the site because I was hoping to find a new one soon. Since I am using it to upload school stuff (as I honestly don't want to use the school's free one...go figure...), I kept breaking down and paying for it. :P

Also, i know I keep disapareing and not updating things. I'm sorry but school and work (work kills my brain so I wander around Middle-earth killing orcs to make myself feel a bit better, heh). BUT, i have been playing with Falas's site again. :D (aka GO LOOK! hehee) Its kinda messy so I'll just post certian in-progress links: http://www.wolf-mage.com/falasv6/wings_test.html (only look at the Rising Mist page as it's my test wing) and K'man's page. I want opinions on the use of the accoridan and tabbed scripts Dreamweaver gave me access to.

@ Neishai: Give me links and I'll [try to] get them un-abandoned/undeceased. :P RL happens so I don't care. *points to self*

Also, if you guys have questions, send me an email or something instead of this thing though use kynta65 @ gmail . com (no spaces) as that is new and I get less spam. :P

*gets sucked away by RL again* Chiro appointment! yay. My back/neck will be happy. :P

I seriously need to get into the nexus from my desktop. It won't let me. :(

Anyway: http://www.wolf-mage.com/falasv6/

Let me know if the spry animated stuff is too much and I will see what I can do. :P

Here is a quick overview of what I've done that I would like your opinions on in terms of getting to the information or content:

Weyrbowl: Image Slider - Annoying or ok? I'll eventually get Illustrator going with some images for that. For now, deal with one image (that I'm not satisfied with) and text. >.<
Fighting Wings: The overall information is still on the left, like before, but I've put all the wings in a tabbed javascript instead of each their own pages. For the wing information, as Dray requested, it is optional to view.
Hatching Sands: Flights are not visable at first but candidates are. Flights are in an accordian panel though Im trying to get it to behave and have at least the first one showing initally.

Lower Caverns: I'll be putting firelizard adoption links directly on this page rather then sending you somewhere else. Rous Hold, should I ever figure that out, will be in anouther tabbed setting. I may condense the list of residents, weyrbrats, and winged wolves into more tabbed panels.

Records Room: Again, I hope I didn't go to spry-panel crazy but it beats all the pages and links i had before. The records open with the Eleventh Pass (current) records initially but the accordian allows you to view the 10th pass and the 3 special cluches from that time. Clutch charts are now tabbed. I've thought this might get annoying as you have to click each tab to see the clutch but there is a reason I like this way. One, I can put all information relevant to that clutch (ie genetic code listing and pedigree) with that clutch chart rather than seperate pages. One thing I want to ask my teacher is about getting a search bar in there just for the records but we will see (apparently I don't deal with database driven websites until next quarter anyway...)

Wing Pages (visit K'man): I've tried to stick the information that i deamed as 'optional' into an accordian. This allows you to look if you want but keeps the page tidy. That about it for the rider pages. All stories will be on their own pages as I think the accordian or tabs might get annoying (though...*plots* tabbed might work...*looks innocent*)

EDIT: http://www.wolf-mage.com/falasv6/rider/kman_test.html Or maybe like this?

Ok, i'm going to bed now. :P Critics are welcome as you guys are the ones that need to find your away around more than I. :D

PS. To lazy to spell check, sorry...

Truth be told I like the simple style that's up just ... fine. :) I don't like bells and whistles and too many options, I just like to find stuff on a page and be done, and as long as it's not fugly (which your layouts never are) there's no real issue for me. :)

>_> i just want mah dragons :D

Shard, what dragon images do you need? Or should I say, what clutch?

The most recent I think 2 from Falas and the one/s from New Dark Moon? Basically anything that's on my droppin-the-fork/dragonsites pages (if you have current links, which you should, since I think I'd moved all my characters over by the time these hatchings happened) that doesn't have more than a hatchling on it, is what I either missed or haven't been released.

V'inny

Ashena

... Those are just the ones I had from Dragonhope, I don't THINK there were others on different spots in my site. (not that that's not enough lol)

I think it's clutches 12 through 14 and whatever was done at New Dark Moon.

Ok, I've been thinking and I would really like to get Falas back up and have some clutches again (and no, Shard, I have not forgotten about your dragon images...it's just been ages since I used PSP and I have to see if I have to make some of the stages yet or not...and when I usually remember it I'm on my laptop and most of my template stuff is on my PC's external HD. heh)

But, would only bring back Falas and leave the others for now. I don't have time for them all. Besides, I want to try to make Falas more database driven so that it's easier for me to update and stuff. Star says she can help and my teacher said it's possible (anything is possible on the web it seems). What this includes for me would be adding annoucements on the site, adding/subtracting/moving riders in my wings (and adding or deleting/renaming wings), clutches (dunno, maybe find a way for you to submit candidates differently where you fill out the form, and you're added right away to the pending list until I look it over and approve it? *blinkblink*), add and edit records...fancy stuff like that. It would save me time and even my characters would be put into a database system. I would basicly click, add rider/candidate, link images, fill out a form for stuff, have a way to add the stories (and edit them), and *poof* candidate/rider added/updated....dunno how hard that will be but it would sure make my life easier everytime i change my stupid layout. lol

I might have to forgo colors on my pages tho...the dragon colors (ie green looks green, gold looks gold...) but we'll see. Perhaps, if I need a site to play with before the Nexus on in class I'll tormet Falas a bit. lol :D

BUUUTTT...i wanted to let you all know that Falas may be coming back. If i open anouther one, it will be the FGPC. I know most of you liked my other sites because they wern't Pern...but...Falas was the first and it's where my most favoritest characters are. :D So...keep watching. It may return in a new, awesome looking way. :P

Though it sounds like it's going to be a bit strange, I'd love to have another place to send candidates and an excuse to snag some of those FGPC firelizards. :)
