New Arrivals

Post by Mystic Dragon »

((What the what?! New thread!))

The dimension didn’t have an ocean. Oceans had edges. Oceans had bottoms. The gentle black waves lapping at the edges of the sprawling steel metropolis that was Shy’s laboratory stretched on without end. The lab existed as the only source of finality throughout the dimension. A single shining star in a watery void. Somehow, it had sunlight. That was likely Shy’s doing. As was the greenery sprouting across the surface of the floating city. Flowers and trees and ferns of exotic worlds all growing together harmoniously. Unnaturally. A wind coasted across the surface of the lab, stirring the waves in an endless, mesmerizing dance. The wind had no source, but it always seemed to present itself whenever the air above the labs, for it had no sky to speak of, hosted a dragon.

Stacurik appeared in the air above the labs, his wings catching the sourceless wind. He hovered for a moment as his rider got his bearings, then began a slow, gentle glide toward the circular landing pad that sat out front of the lab’s stately welcome building. On his back, secured fast to the saddle and to his passenger, Thayer winced as his ribs sent up a beacon of protest in the form of blinding pain.

“Ease up a little, Sabrilla,” he called over his shoulder. “I would like to arrive on the ground with unbroken ribs.”

“Wh- what. What.” The only thing the awed and terrified young daughter of the Coranaet house could manage was a string of half-formed questions as she gaped at the wonder below.

Steel buildings. Glass buildings. Buildings that mushroomed up into bulbous tops. Buildings that curved and arched and stretched at impossible angles. Strips of metal like ribbon running between the lot of them with windows all the way along. Trees grew out of rooftops and alongside walkways. Birds flitted from one tree to the next, one building to the next, all of them colourful and fanciful and unlike anything she’d seen before.

Thayer well knew the wonder of visiting a new world. He had so many more he still wanted to explore. Which he momentarily feared might not happen if Sabrilla squeezed any harder.

You really should have taken the time to warn her, Stacurik chastised him. Though the blue dragon focused on his steady, patient descent, Thayer could’ve sworn he saw a smile twitch the edge of his scaly muzzle.

Time was a little short and she insisted on leaving at dawn. Besides, had we stayed any longer, I’ve no doubt that step-mother of hers would have shed her skin, revealed the snake that she is, and swallowed her up whole, Thayer retorted.

The woman’s ambitious. Not evil.

If it would’ve saved me the trouble of carrying her stuff, I would have happily fed one to the other, Baneo’Mybl, the scarred, grumpy red Geperna following after them, rumbled in irritation. Did she really need to pack her entire damn wardrobe?
She didn’t, Baaki’Virh, the violet Geperna coasting along beside her brother called out in a sing song mental tone. She packed only what was necessary, as a woman is always prepared for every situation.

Oh yeah? What dress do you wear when getting stepped on?

Stop it, Bane said to his two bonds. Baneo grumbled again, but soon after, all three dragons came to a landing. The large red released a noise that was part growl and part sigh of relief as he lay down in such a way that the six satchels attached to his harness rested on the ground.

Thayer turned in his saddle as Stacurik crouched, wings half-spread, and offered his hand to Sabrilla.

For a moment, the girl remained frozen in place, too afraid or awe-struck to do anything more than blink owlishly at her surroundings. When at last she noticed Thayer’s extended hand, her already wide eyes grew wider still, and she looked to the steel platform on which Stacurik rested.

“Is it… is it safe,” she asked tentatively.

“Safer than any ship you’ve ever been on. Trust me,” Thayer said. He gave her a smile, and as he anticipated, his supernatural charm outweighed her fear. Sabrilla slipped her arms away from his waist, gripped his hand with both of hers, and gingerly slipped out of the saddle straps. It took her a full minute to make it to the ground, and once she had, she kept hold of Thayer’s hand as if letting go meant the ground beneath her feet would vanish.

Thayer did not dismount as gracefully as he typically might have. Having a woman firmly attached to the end of his arm had that effect. He still managed to get down without tripping over his own feet though, and once settled, moved Sabrilla’s hand from its death grip on his own hand to a courtly hook around his elbow.

Sabrilla had the decency to blush upon realizing how her clinginess must have looked. She tried to recover herself, straightening her spine and closing her mouth, though she could not stop staring around at their surroundings in abject wonder. Bane joined them a few seconds later, after having detached the bags from Baneo’s saddle.

“I see some attendants headed this way,” Bane said.

Thayer looked past his brother and noted the tall, willowy figures emerging from the welcome center. Four of them at least. Shy certainly knew how to greet his guests.

“Excellent. They’ll be able to take care of Sabrilla’s things. In the meantime, we should find our host and introduce you. And then, with some luck, we’ll find out we’re the fashionably late arrivals and I’ll be able to begin your education in the who’s who of the Nexus networking world,” Thayer said, hitting Sabrilla with another smile.

Sabrilla smiled in return, though the expression barely touched her lips before it vanished again, swallowed by a mixture of shock and trepidation. The poor girl hadn’t been off-world more than a few minutes and already she was overwhelmed.

Thayer knew she would adapt though. She was a strong creature, both in will and intelligence. Once she got her bearings, she would thrive in this new reality of hers.

The three Tris’Hathian representatives set off toward the welcome center as the attendants reached the dragons. Without a word of instruction, they began to collect Sabrilla’s bags and carry them off to places unknown within the webwork of towers and walkways that made up the floating island. Just as Thayer knew they would. Shy was a man of proper manners, after all.

‘Shy’

The geneticist peered at the data set in front of him, letting out an absentminded murmur of assent for his aide. The needles from this project _might_ work on the Mad King, but he wondered if the speed of the man’s healing abilities would be too great. With images of the most delightful Sanger sporting silver and gold porcupine needles in his arms, he looked up.

Why had his aide not left?

“Ari, it is up to you to greet the delegates, make sure they were housed, fed, exercised.” His tone was slightly dismayed.

His most important clutch had brought in the most delightful assortment of candidates- future leaders, power players- the beginnings of an integrated network and an alliance that would span the Nexus.

He had _plans_. That could not be interrupted. By people.

His aide stared at him with gray eyes that refused to go molten gold.

“Your favorite one is here, with a candidate.”

Shy brightened. “Oh, you should have said so! Of course I will go meet-“

“Thayer” Ari supplied.

“Yes.” His lips curved into a smile.

What had Mystic’s son brought for him today?

“We have other candidates arriving today, Shy. Maybe at the same time. Please. PLEASE” she emphasized again. “Be on your best behavior. We don’t want the candidates frightened off before the eggs have hatched.”

The tall androgynous man with long raven black hair, feline green eyes dressed in a delicate qipao of silver and blue silk smiled. His nails, sporting curved ornaments of silver and blue with tassels and beadss clinked together as he brought together his hands.

“I am always on my best behavior, Ari.” He crooned. “Now, let us go meet our candidates.”

Sabrilla gaped at the open, airy interior of the welcome center. She stared in awe at the white walls that arched up higher than the turrets of her castle back home before coming together at an apex hundreds of feet over her head. She marvelled at the smooth glass windows that made up a good half of the structure all around her. All the while, she clung to Thayer's arm in a most unladylike manner. She was a child of the Sudland noble family. She was also a fifteen year old girl in an alien setting with near-strangers, being led to meet a man she knew only as "Shy." For the first time in her life, she thought Sewyn's approach to the unknown quite fitting. All she wanted to do was hide.

"He doesn't do small, does he," Thayer murmured absently to himself as he too stared around at the ornate structure and furnishings of the welcome center. The floor was glossy and smooth and looked quite cavernous with only the odd attendant drifting through the room. Up ahead, a curved staircase lead up to a second floor. It was there that Thayer's eyes found a familiar dark-haired figure decked out in a robe as showy as his surroundings.

"Ah, we were just coming to see you," Thayer called up to the geneticist. "I've brought someone you should meet."

Janardan was never much for ostentatious aesthetics for beauty's sake, quite unlike his father, but there was no denying the attractiveness of Shy's sprawling 'laboratories' as The White Serpent touched down inside the pocket dimension. The cacophony of minds screaming around him concurred, all except his constant companion Greer who growled and grumbled as he huffed hot breath across the view port. The tralvisk was notoriously neophobic and Janardan considered leaving him behind at the Refugium, but it might be easier for him to accept a (potential) bondmate if he was present at the hatching. Janardan just hoped he didn't cause too much trouble during their visit. The last thing he needed was to be exiled from Shy's labs before he'd even had the chance to stand, because Greer bit the wrong butt.

"You behave," Janardan said, casting the tralvisk a stern look.

Greer huffed, but Janardan felt the inkling of reserved assent from his mind.

"Good boy."

They hadn't brought much of a retinue. There was Janardan and Kutoth (who had come with trepidation, he didn't make many public appearances anymore), Dr. Krum acting as the supervisor to the young Dietlinde, and a few employees Janardan only knew the names of from scanning their minds, for the purposes of bag carrying and the like. The itch to bring along security nagged at Janardan. Kutoth wasn't as powerful as he once was and Janardan has no idea what was in store for them in this pocket dimension. Dietlinde was military, but her only magical prowess was the ability to shapeshift into a massive dog-like creature. Hardly useful in a fight against firebreathing dragons.

:: You're worrying too much.:: Kutoth's voice entered Janardan's mind like a soothing balm.

:: Probably not. :: Janardan replied, but it didn't matter. They'd already arrived.

The White Serpent docked in the appropriate area and the tiny group disembarked, leaving behind a skeleton crew of ship's workers.

"This place is magnificent," said Dietlinde, gawking as if she hadn't been born on a sprawling space station herself. But maybe it wasn't the city she was mystified by. The oceans lapped and waved, turning the air to sweet salt and the numbing the chorus of minds and voices with a soothing crash of water. Station born, she may have never seen such vast bodies of water.

"I do wonder what Shy plans to do with this place once he finds the Vella Crean," said Kutoth, aloud for the benefit of all parties.

Dr. Krum smiled her fox-like grin. "If he's setting up an embassy at the Refugium he might give us access to the labs here."

Us. Janardan bristled. The Heimdall was a tenuous ally at best, it wasn't an us.

For the purpose of public appearances and species' unused to the murdon's preference for undress, both Janardan and Kutoth had decked themselves in backless robes that left room for their fronds and many arms. Dr. Krum was invariably in crisp white while Dietlinde wore her dress uniform, sergeants insignia gleaming in the sunlight. They were shortly escorted to the welcoming center where it was quickly apparent they weren't the only group to arrive that day.

Humans - or a group of human-appearing individuals - milled with dragons in the massive room. A twinge of second-hand familiarity hit Janardan. Abiel had met some of these people during her odd excursion to an ice dimension for a winter gather. Janardan couldn't recall the name's she'd told him. There as a young girl with them who exuded the same trepidation as Dietlinde, seemingly overwhelmed by being in wholly unfamiliar territory. Indeed, Janardan saw Dietlinde peering at her from around Dr. Krum's wiry shoulders.

Greer bristled predictably at Janardan's heel, already alert for threats because strangers were present. Janardan stroked his head and sent a calming thrill between their minds.

"I do hope we're not terribly late!" Kutoth announced to the room at large.

Eeny looked out through the window and marvelled once more about this new and unfamiliar place she found herself in. The Island was large enough, but the tall and sometimes impossibly angled buildings were alien to someone who grew up in a small kingdom where the largest building had been the castle she lived in. Stranger still were the dragons that flew on and off.
"I have a feeling the hatching won't be much longer." Eeny said to Quart.
Quart stayed quiet as was his way. He wouldn't talk if he didn't have anything useful to say. Eeny had been trying to get the hunter who'd been degraded - or was it promoted? - to her personal servant to open up. The last week she'd carefully told him what'd be expected of him and what not. Speaking out of turn would not be a problem and Quart had been a quick study when it came to etiquette.
A soft knock sounded on the door.
"We've been asked to gather with the other candidates and attendees." Laedrys Trix's voice sounded.
"Coming." Eeny replied, keeping her voice carefully under control.

The Laedrys checked her dress and fastened the stray lacing ribbon that had come loose. She wasn't exactly comfortable in formal wear, but at least this contraption of a dress allowed her to wear pants underneath. She hadn't come across Shy yet but she'd heard enough stories of the other officials in attendance that she knew she would not want to draw his attention (oh no, a flag of doom was raised!).

As the trio entered the welcome center, Philippe paused, grinning despite anything and everything. He gave his brother a mischievous smirk before trying to run off. Randaril grabbed him by the arm.

"Don't even...You're not here to have fun."

"Actually, I'm pretty sure that is exactly why I am here. You're the one here for the not-so-fun stuff. Besides," Philippe said at his most charming while Tiale smirked at the two brothers. "I might actually know people, so if you don't mind I'm going to go people. Bye!"

Randaril grabbed him again and yanked him back. "No."

"Hey, just because you're better at talking to rocks and trees doesn't mean you can deny me people," Philippe said with a semi pout.

"Yes, I can. And I do not talk to rocks or trees."

"I do," Tiale piped up, raising her hand and grinning. Randaril didn't seem to pay attention but Philippe grinned at her.

"You're here as my bodyguard, remember. I dismissed the other two so now it's your job to..."

Philippe wasn't even looking at him. He suddenly got an excited look on his face and easily shrugged off Randaril's hand. "And I do believe I see a Thayer! Bye!"

"Philippe! No...get..."

"Oh, let him have fun," Tiale chuckled, leaning on the now irritated prince as Philippe trotted off toward a group that had just entered the center.

Randaril glanced at her then shook his head. "Why do I always have to be the responsible one," he muttered, taking Tiale's arm and interlocking it with his as they started to follow the quickly departing blue-rider of Isla Weyr through the crowd. "Even when we were kids and he was still the crowned prince I was still the mature one..."

Tiale only chuckled as they followed Philippe.

The blue rider easily weaved his way through the crowd, nothing but smiles and eager anticipation on his face. He could see a few other faces he was recognizing from his trips throughout the Nexus to find candidates of Isla, but his only goal was only for the son of Mystic. Stepping up right in front of Thayer and his group, Philippe grinned. "Hello, again Thayer! Long time no see!"

Darasath and Renoth appeared in the air above Shy's laboratory, the trip a familiar one to them after so many visits to check in on the eggs currently hardening on the sands. Eggs created from their Clan, even if their results would have... little resemblance to them, if Shy's goal was achieved.

(Darasath had no doubt that Shy's work would be impeccable. After all, he had created all of their kind at the very beginning, so the idea that he would fail in this... she couldn't imagine it.)

Still, both Renoth and Darasath felt protective of their unborn relatives, and Shy had seemed accepting enough of them popping in and out, different core members of their Clan staying at different points to help tend the eggs, with the two of them looking on.

"That's certainly a sight," Catsoberyl murmured as she leaned forward over Darasath's shoulder and peered at the lab below them. "This is the place, then?"

::Yes, this is Shy's lab,:: Darasath answered, not bothering to speak aloud as she usually did. She tipped her wings and began a slow, spiraling descent to the landing platform, pleased when neither Catsoberyl nor Lerya reacted poorly to the motion; for all that they had clearly never interacted with the Nexus before, their entire group was quick to adapt and quite skilled.

A perfect offering to the unborn dragonets on Shy's sands, Darasath felt, especially Catsoberyl, their leader. A guildmaster, and one dedicated enough to be thinking primarily of how to get back to her guild, her people, even while offering help to the Clan that had rescued them from the vast plains of Nyracii. One whose people trusted her implicitly, to the point where two had immediately agreed to split off to bond dragons, in the hope that doing so could help the rest.

Kallis had given a rather glowing report -- for him -- about the easy camaraderie and skill the four remaining Adventurers shared, and it had only solidified her opinion that at least one of these four would bond here.

They landed with a light thump, and both Catsoberyl and Lerya slid fearlessly from her back even before she could crouch to give them a shorter drop, Beryl's samurai armor clinking lightly as she landed and straightened back up, adjusting her two blades to settle them back into position. Renoth landed next to her, and both Michiyo and Varix slid easily from her back as well, Varix accompanied by the clatter of his full plate armor and Michiyo by the jingle of his chainmaille.

Still, all four Adventurers landed with ease despite the weight of their gear and the distance they had to fall; it was part of what made them Adventurers, Darasath suspected, though none of the four had said anything to that effect. Certainly, they'd shown a measure of disregard for injuries that Kallis had found concerning, though their attention to danger was apparently impeccable.

(Given the skill in which Lerya simply erased injuries as if they'd never happened, Darasath rather suspected that their 'disregard' had more to do with their confidence in Lerya's skills, rather than any true disregard on their part.)

"Come, I'll take you to the welcoming center while Renoth checks in with the eggs," Darasath said as she turned to lead the way, leaving her sister-queen to satisfy both of their needs to keep tabs on the eggs. "Then, after you've gotten some rooms assigned and know where they are, I'll show you the hatching ground and introduce you to a few other Clan members who are here at the moment."

"Thank you," Catsoberyl replied as she and the others lengthened their strides to keep up with Darasath's pace. "I look forward to meeting more of you Clan."

Darasath hummed in agreement, then nodded at the building ahead of them. "There, that's where we're heading. I am uncertain if Shy will be around right now, but I can introduce him to you later."

"Sounds like a plan," Catsoberyl agreed, casting a thoughtful look up at Darasath as she did. Whatever was going through her mind, though, she didn't speak of, merely patted the hilt of one blade, squared her shoulders, and followed Darasath into the welcoming center without another word.

The four of them stood out, Beryl decided the moment their group was through the doors and Darasath had settled against one wall, out of the way of the humanoids who were mingling about in the area, and began to speak with a... Pigeon? She thought that was the right name for the little winged humanoids.

She and her three party members were kitted out in their full Adventurer gear, not having brought along any sort of formal clothing when they'd originally been intending on raiding a dungeon, and because of that they were... rather out of place. Clearly, this was a bit fancier of a gathering than Darasath had bothered to inform her of, but that was fine. She was an Adventurer, just like the rest of her party, and if anyone took offense at them wearing their gear, she'd gleefully point out that their gear was their best attire.

Lerya stepped up to her shoulder and cast her a sidelong, amused look, her nine black tails swishing lazily as she murmured, "Bets on Darasath wanting to do more than 'introduce us to her Clan'?"

Beryl huffed and shook her head. "No bets," she murmured back. "I think we're all going to get co-opted into bonding something, even if it doesn't happen here. You remember what she said the first time, about feeling that all of us would do well at bonding."

"I suppose we'll see what comes of it, then," Lerya said as she scanned the gathered guests thoughtfully. "For now, I suppose the best thing to do is learn the lay of the land while Darasath sorts out our stay here."

"Hopefully we don't frighten everyone off," Beryl said dryly, then stepped away from the wall, aiming to mingle with whoever decided she and the others didn't look too barbaric or out of place at a gathering like this.

Shy beamed as he reached out with both hands, ready to give his favourite nephew (a concept entirely existing only in Shy's mind) a quick peck on the cheek. His eyes were bright, curious as they eyed the young woman who clung to his side.

"My dear boy" he crooned. "Is this delightful young lady your candidate?"

Another connection with Tris' Hath, one the Red Mage would be ecstatic to discover.

@baka-ryu

Ari managed a graceful half run, half walk over as she typed out quick commands on her tablet.

"My lord" she bowed in a silk sheath that should have made the movement awkward, and smiled. "Shy will be here to greet you personally, soon" the aide sent a mental stab in her creator's direction. "In the meanwhile, welcome to his Labs."

Months. She had spent MONTHS dancing through paperwork, plans, contracts, liaising with contacts across the Nexus to build Shy his pretty little home at the Refugium. She sent another mental stab at her creator.

The Abstract Destiny was not a ship meant for ground-based landing or docking. Following given coordinates, it warped into the empty sky above Shy's labs, and there it stayed while Doctor Schroeder and the Destiny's selected candidate were teleported to the city-island below.

The invitation had asked for just two -- leader and candidate -- and Schroeder, being a more humble sort of fellow, had seen no reason not to stick to just that. There had been some protests from those more deeply invested in looking after him than others, given the number of self-assigned bodyguards he'd accumulated over time, but he trusted enough that there was no danger to be had in accepting Shy's invitation. Besides... it wasn't as if Schroeder himself was entirely incapable of defending himself when need be.

His volunteer candidate looked far more delighted about things as they strolled to join the gathering at the welcome area. Xiao Shy was Shy in literal miniature, a genetic project that had departed with Schroeder and his sponsored dragons after his one and only visit to the Vella Crean itself before its inexplicable (as far as Schroeder was aware) loss from the Nexus. Clad in a bright red cheongsam, mirroring the originating Shy's style, Xiao Shy nibbled at a tiny petit four style cake even as he looked around and drank in the sights.

"This would be a lovely style to mimic for your Nidus, don't you think?" he asked in a little purr of the taller geneticist beside him.

"It is quite beautiful," Schroeder agreed, and as he looked ahead and began to identify the larger groupings of people arriving earlier than them, he chuckled with a slow shake of his head. If that was the kind of showing Shy expected in his invitations for 'lineage', well, it only confirmed to Schroeder that sending such an invitation to his ship was a little... out of place.

But then again, with the little Shy at his side, perhaps it was perfectly as intended.

Vaeden stood looking out of the broad window of their suite, it was high enough up that it didn't have a balcony. Which was wise, because the group had been located to a rather plush place farther up than Leespire's castle was over the town below it back home. A fall from even that height was ... bad. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back, a feature he'd picked up from his father Van; in fact he looked so similar that anyone who didn't realize it wasn't Van would have paused when Vaeden turned to reveal a much younger face and slimmer build. (Plus he always was dressed up, not like dad, not at all...) His sister Devera was still looking through all the varied booklets and information that she could find about this place.

"Father," Vaeden said quietly, "I can't help but notice that this place isn't... a place."

As he stared up into the skies, they were roiling with nothingness. Van approached, still a bit wearied from his excursion with Shy to the labs proper (let's not go into what was required of him there, shall we? He enjoyed it. Shy enjoyed it. It was about needles. They're both weirdos.), and glanced upwards into that self same 'aboveness'. He grunted, "looks like, yes."

"Don't the dragons require ... stars, or trajectories or landmarks?" Vaeden asked, and his sister finally perked up.

"Usually they do," she replied, ever knowledgeable about dragons or the steeds or whatever else caught her fancy. "I mean, we do only know that much about ours back home," she shrugged, but approached the pair standing by the window, to look out. Not to gawk, something bothered her about the not-sky. Something perhaps lingering from their long trip through spacetime to get here.

"It seems ... lonely," Vaeden said, quietly. While they had noticed that the large place wasn't exactly filled to the brim with people, they had all certainly felt the same - but it wasn't a loneliness based on lack of population. It was more a feeling of missing pieces, hiraeth in a word. But also purposeful, this place was made for something. More than merely to impress visually.

Van grunted, "oh, we're meant to be somewhere," he checked a little item, Vaeden wanted one - it was a datapad, given to Van by Shy. Probably to keep track of his whereabouts, and probably also to watch him when he was naked, but who's to say. It had a camera.

With that, the pair of siblings perked up. They were refreshed from their travels, the gift horses had been tended to and declared the impromptu owners of that large swath of parkland they'd been brought to. Devera fretted only momentarily before deciding to wear a more elegant dress instead of the leggings and smock she was used to. They were royalty, they'd been invited because they were royalty, might as well look the part. Vaeden always looked snappy in his own high-necked suit, they were both pleased that they still matched, as well as the fact that their mother had sewn both their outfits. So in a way, Adae too would be here at least in spirit.

Van looked down at the datapad but then put it away. "We could try and find the location of this meeting, or wait for an attendant." He paused just long enough for the kids to start telepathically discussing it, "we'll wait, because I would rather not get lost and miss dinner."

He smirked, and both of his children rolled their eyes and got back to waiting around...

Thayer stepped forward fluidly as Shy held out his hands, slipping out of Sabrilla's grasp as if the death grip she had on his arm exerted pressure only when he willed it so. Sabrilla herself looked a little bewildered to be left standing alone and wrapped her arms around herself for something to occupy her grasping hands.

"It's good to see you again, Shy," Thayer said as he allowed the geneticist to kiss his cheek. He did not return the gesture, but instead moved one step to the side and held out a hand to Sabrilla. The young girl took hold of it like a life line. Thayer guided her forward and turned his iconic smile on Shy. "Please allow me to introduce Nobili Sabrilla Alyssa Coranaet of House Coranaet, ruling house of Sudland. I don't think we've spoken much on Tris'Hathian politics, but Sudland is Lanutha's most cherished ally. They were the first to put forth a selection of candidates to begin their own warren. Sabrilla here will be leading it."

"How do you do." Her lips shaped the words, but her voice barely made more than a whispered appearance. She dipped into a curtsy regardless, determined to force her shocked mind and body to adhere to the social standards she knew so well.

No sooner had Thayer finished the introductions than a familiar blonde figure appeared before him. He let out an excited laugh and clapped Philippe on the shoulder. "Hey! It's been a while. Not since that... ah... rousing introduction I had to Isla Weyr."

It had been some time since the frenzy at Isla, which Thayer hadn't been expecting to be drawn into. Stacurik, in a strange bout of eagerness, had talked Thayer into staying on at Isla a few days longer. When Thayer woke up in the middle of the night one evening to find his dragon in hot pursuit of the junior (senior? How did Pernese rankings work?) queen, he understood the insistence.

I have no regrets, Stacurik said.

Behind the small group, remaining as inconspicuous as an obelisk in a wheat field, the towering, black-armoured brother to Thayer released a discreet, deflated sigh. Bane took no issue to Philippe. In fact, he quite liked the search rider's company. Yet with the two of them together in a new environment, trouble was sure to follow.

@Phe

"Report," drawled a nasally, irritated voice from the shadows of the darkened room. Lights blinked, a screen created a small barrier of illumination against the darkness, and somewhere from the shapeless void, a woman's voice spoke up.

"Recognized domains; Pern, Leespire, Amaras, Tris'Hath, Abstract Destiny-"

"Stop," the nasally voice commanded. "Show me Abstract Destiny."

The viewing screen was at least the size of a grown man, curved slightly so that all edges faced toward the user. Beneath it, an array of buttons and touch pads blinked, beeped, buzzed, and otherwise existed in whatever energized state they were meant to be in. The man who stood before them wore a starched white lab coat, matching white turtleneck and pants, and a pair of flat, black goggles that fitted directly to his skin. He stared at the screen as it panned around the entry room of the welcome center and landed on a familiar gray-haired scientist. A smile curved across Faust's lips.

He hated these interlopers. He hated all the pomp and fanfare going into this clutch. He hated knowing that this whole affair wouldn't end until long after the clutch hatched, and of those who attended, Shy had forbid him from absconding with even one teeny, tiny measly little attendant that no one would notice missing. Shy got his genetic samples. Faust got to sit in his dark room and sulk. Now though. Now he finally found something that might hold his interest until this mess could wrap itself up. He wondered if Schroeder would even remember him.

"Are all of our guests in attendance," Faust asked the sourceless voice.

"Negative. Subjects nine, ten, and eleven remain in their rooms."

Faust tsked in irritation.

"Have Striga go and fetch them. Seems to be everyone's chosen this moment to congregate and if there's going to be a party, Shy should have all his pets in attendance." Faust moved toward the door. It existed beyond the light of the viewing screen, but he had no issue with navigating the shadows. Outlines of gray and white gave sharp definition to his world, regardless of the amount of light available. The door opened before he reached it, spilling light into the dark chamber. Sterile white walls and stainless steel tables caught a brief glimpse of colour before Faust stepped through the opening and the door shut behind him. With his hands clasped behind his back and a false smile plastered to his face, Faust went to greet the intruders to his home.

---

@Shard

Striga, unlike her papa, could not have been more delighted by the veritable cornucopia of new friends her daddy had brought to their home. So many new faces. So many pretty bodies. So many stories and histories and pedigrees. So many delicious smells.

Upon receiving her papa's summons by way of the call system in her room, Striga touched up her make up, slipped into her slinkiest dress, and sauntered out of their personal apartments to make the trek over to the visitor area. It was a new addition, but daddy had spared no expense in putting it together. As such, Striga was not surprised to see the same lavish decorations and high, arching ceilings as in their living quarters. She took a tram to the building's entrance, rode the elevator to the top floor, and arrived before the singular door that led to the apartment building's suite.

Technically, every room on every floor of this building was a suite, but thanks to Van's early arrival, he'd earned the one with the best view. Also, daddy seemed to practically salivate whenever discussing the Mad King and his children. Maybe she'd finally understand why.

Striga knocked three times on the door, then stood back to wait.

Schroeder could have said he was not bothered by social gatherings of this kind. True, he thought inviting him when noble, imperial lineages were sought was somewhere between a mistake and a wry joke -- one he could appreciate, mind you -- but the size of the gathering hardly bothered him. Neither did the possibilities that these were indeed people of remarkable bloodlines and pedigrees, swarmed by their entourages and other persons of rank. He'd interacted with all kinds in his time and he was not an introvert. The large gathering, in itself, did not distress him. He spotted Shy arriving and beginning to mingle, but Schroeder neither expected or sought favoritism. He would wait his turn, and patiently.

What Schroeder did not expect, on the other hand, was the spotting of a familiar face that stiffened the iron in his spine and chased the genial good cheer from his own features. Oh, he remembered Faust, most certainly. He'd been an unfortunate involvement with the hath-hydras, the ones dubbed nameless by their hydra-mother.

Schroeder had made mistakes in his time. The hath-hydras had been one of them. Not the creatures themselves, for each one of them was precious now and he hoped they lived well -- but if he had never thought hydra blood could be tempered with Hathian, then he never would have had to turn poor Nairyg over to Faust.

Faust faked a smile, but Schroeder did not bother. He kept his eyes on the other scientist and his face fell into a stern frown as he tracked the other's movements so that the distasteful little man wouldn't catch him by surprise.

Philippe managed a half-hearted, almost nervous/embarrassed laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Ah yes...Flynnth's little...surprise frenzy that nearly got half the riders with dragons involved in a lot of trouble..." He sighed. "Well, that's not due to hatch for a while, so I was allowed some R&R while M'len does all the leg work this time around. Well, at least until this special clutch hatches." He turned around trying to find Randaril and Tiale in the crowd. Not able to see them, he shrugged and turned back to Thayer. "So...you here trying for one of those or just," and he leaned over to peak at the girl with the young man, "escorting?"

[FYI, I'm leaving Randaril and Tiale out in case someone wants to interact with them away from Philippe. :P]

The sound of a rather traditional knock-knock-knock at the suite's door somewhat surprised the two teens, but Van had heard footsteps arriving shortly before. He had to hand it to whoever had crafted this area, even though he could certainly still detect sounds, they were dampened reasonably well. He might even get a good night's sleep here.

That thought made him all but guffaw out loud, when he'd first realized it. But for the moment, he had already been slowly pacing around the large area, marveling at the manufacture of this table or that chandelier. It was a very nice - slightly overdone - place. He assumed the entire island was this detailed, after all if it was set aside as it seemed to be in its own 'space', was it actually 'built'?

He had only the very faint recollection of times training with that professor from Carramba High, himself in another dimension, who claimed that such things were all over the place if one knew how to look for them.

As he rounded the wide, low, glass table in the middle of the area, he instead directed his attention at the door, holding his hand up slightly when he knew both his children had looked up.

Old habits died hard, Van squinted as though he could see through the door. He could not, but then remembered: this place was supposed to be safe, supposed to not have assassins or stray threats. Besides... assassins rarely knocked. He had, once or twice. But that was a thousand years before...

He opened the door and was greeted by a cheerful slender woman, young, and the spitting image of Shy. He smiled, "well this is... interesting? Come in? Or ... are we meant to come with you?"

Behind him, Devera glanced at the young woman who stood in the doorway, and flickered her aqua colored eyes at her brother. Who was staring. Full bore staring at her. She thought the better of tripping him when he started moving toward that side of the large chamber.

"Well hello there," he said before anyone could shut him up.

"Oh, there's no need for all that." Kutoth beamed a warm smile at Aki. The expression might take some getting used to between species, murdon mouths weren't quite as flexible as a human's, but the intention was there. "We'll be fine on our own if you can point us in the right direction."

Although here might be well enough as others began pouring into the massive foyer. Large public gatherings were no longer comfortable for him and his fronds tightened to worried curls at the influx of people and dragons. Janardan's hand settled warmly on his shoulder, and with it the touch of his mind - steady and confident.

:: I'll mingle. :: said Janardan, mind-to-mind. :: You'll be fine with Aki. ::

True enough, Kutoth had been corresponding with the young woman for months and her presence was more familiar than many of the other faces that arrived.

Kutoth spotted a few familiar figures, though. Dr. Schroeder stood out. Always nice to see a like-minded individual in the group. And what was that delightfully tiny person accompanying him? Curiosity began to beat Kutoth's nerves at bay. The human seemed entangled in some other conversation and Kutoth didn't want to intrude, but...

Kutoth extracted himself from Aki with a deep bow. "I think I might mingle as well."

Kutoth started toward Dr. Shroeder and his companion (Faust), stooping a little to not appear so imposing. He couldn't miss the animosity swirling tension between minds and it made his fronds tighten further.

"Dr. Schroeder!" Kutoth greeted, louder than necessary. "It seems like all the Nexus' geneticists fit the bill of imperial lineage today! Who are your companions?" He forced a deep chuckle, eyeing Faust and the tiny Shy clone.

----

( @yakima )

Janardan was reluctant to go far from this father but he was here to make an impression. As long as Kutoth remained only a mental nudge away, Janardan needed to tamp down his worries and socialize. Greer shot out from behind Janardan's robes, spurred by the stormy ambivalence of his master's mind.

"Greer!" Janardan shouted and rushed after him. He should never have brought the tralvisk! If he couldn't control his own pet how could he cut the bill for a dragon. Janardan shoved himself past the milling crowd. "Greer, stop!"

The tralvisk halted, head low and tail swaying in slow arcs. He'd paused seconds before barreling into a pair of young-looking humanoids (Tiale and Randaril). Why he'd chosen them to get his hackles up about, Janardan couldn't fathom. He should be used to handling himself in crowds. Janardan needed to get his own worries in check. Kutoth was safe. Everything would be fine.

Greer's body language loosened and he turned, trotting back to Janardan with head held high as if he'd done nothing wrong.

"I'm sorry." Janardan approved the pair of pale strangers, palms exposed in apology. "He's usually better behaved than that."

"Good boy," piped Greer. "Treat?"

:: Absolutely not!::

This place was amazing! Dietlinde didn't have much of a mind for aesthetics but even these grand, looping pillars of silver could impress her. She felt dwarfed by everything, one little human drifting in this ocean of grandiosity, her dress uniform unimpressive and drab next to elaborate royal get-ups. Then again, a few of the present visitors dressed like they'd been hauled off a dirt road. It wasn't them that caught Dietlinde's eye, though. It was the dragons.

She'd seen plenty at the Heimdall but her interactions with them had been few. And now, not more than a dozen yards away, was a grand golden beast that was as decorous and gorgeous as anything else on this island.

"You can probably say hello," said Dr. Krum, nudging Dietlinde toward the dragon.

Dietlinde wanted to protest, but that's not what a Rosenheim would do. She shouldn't be afraid. Dietlinde straightened the creased from her tunic and marched toward the dragon, chin held high. Her heart hammered more rapidly with every step and she paused in the looming shadow of the dragon, breathless and wide-eyed but unwilling to voice her fear.

And now that she was here she had absolutely nothing to say. Dietlinde forged on regardless.

"Good... afternoon?" Morning? "I'm Staff Sergeant Dietlinde Rosenheim. Are you one of the clutches' parents?"

"Escorting," Thayer said. Once again he stepped aside to strip Sabrilla of her shelter in his shadow. The poor girl looked so hopelessly terrified and in awe of everything around her, and yet struggling to maintain the composure of her rank and birth. Thayer motioned her forward as he spoke. "Please allow me to introduce Nobili Sabrilla Alyssa Coranaet of House Coranaet. She's from Sudland, which is one of Lanutha's allies." Thayer paused, waving a hand dismissively through the air to dispel any questions about Tris'Hathian politics the quick introduction might produce. "Long story short, they're starting their own warren and Sabrilla here is going to lead it."

"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance," Sabrilla squeaked in the voice of a little girl who most certainly wasn't doing a good job of representing her homeland. She cleared her throat, dropped into a quick curtsy, and then stepped back with the fervent hope that she might vanish into the floor if she tried hard enough.

"This is all still very new for Sabrilla. I'm sure she'll be managing Nexus relations like a proper leader in no time though," Thayer said. He was focused on Philippe, and so didn't see the vibrant blush that coloured Sabrilla's cheeks. "How about you? Is Faroth getting a new friend or are you hiding your own candidates somewhere?"

Faust surveyed the impromptu party from high above on the balcony circling the welcome center's foyer. He stood tall (or as tall as his diminutive 5'6" would allow), with his hands clasped behind his back and the expression on his face carefully manicured into a polite, socially acceptable smile. He was high up enough that the twitch affecting his lip, demanding a sneer in place of the smile, was invisible to the crowd below.

"Pigeon," he called.

Immediately, a small, willowy figure with fluffy white wings and a crown of golden curls appeared behind him. He didn't need to turn around to feel the creature's trepidation in his presence.

"Have the kitchens prepare some tasting platters. Finger foods. Quick and easy to assemble. I want tables and trays placed around the foyer five minutes ago. Summon some of the attendants to bring drinks as well. Shy is... occupied," Faust watched the tall, raven-haired man swim through the crowd with the grace of a swan, dispensing greetings and coos of delight on his precious visitors. "All questions and issues are to be directed through me." He paused, turning so that the black expanse of his goggles pinned the Pigeon in place. "And I expect there to be no issues."

"Yes, yes. Right away," the Pigeon squeaked. With a buzz and a pop, it vanished into the air.

Faust waited a moment, then proceeded to the stairs. He'd marked the moment Schroeder had noticed him and felt a certain chill directed his way. Yes, the man definitely remembered him. Well at least that would provide him with some amusement while he dealt with the logistics of this... party. Why couldn't they all just stay in their rooms and wait patiently to be called down to the sands like proper test subjects? Ugh. People and their need to socialize. Well, he was nothing if not an accomplished actor. He knew how to put on an alluring front, distracting people with his knowledge and wit so that they didn't ask probing questions. He just hadn't been required to rely on those skills in... Gods, how many years had it been? Decades? He didn't want to think on it.

As Faust reached the bottom of the stairs, he noticed a tall, pale figure moving towards Schroeder. This one he didn't know, but the man with his multiple arms and curling tendrils certainly caught his interest. He hoped dearly that Shy had gotten a good sample off that one.

"My my, already becoming so popular, Doctor Schroeder," Faust said as he came within speaking range. He turned to look up at the tall, white figure. Bald, like himself. That was amusing. "I am Faust. I don't believe I've had the pleasure of making your acquaintance yet."

@Shard

The door opened to reveal a stunning example of a man. Tall, with rich, dark skin and eyes to match. And behind him, two younger versions of himself. The girl looked skeptical of her already. Or perhaps simply wary of the way her brother moved as if lost in a dream. The boy seemed already entranced. She wouldn't even need to feed to make him her own. But it was the father that drew Striga's attention the most.

"Oh my. Aren't you a feast," she purred in a sweet, sultry voice too old for the girl that stood before them. Striga could not have been out of her teens yet. Eighteen at most. Yet she stood with the confidence and figure of a woman grown. The silky violet dress that draped across her frame accentuated her curves. The long, glossy black hair hanging to her mid-back, half of it caught up with ornate pins and ties that glittered like jewels in a night sky, provided just a hint of cover with the way she kept it draped over one shoulder. Crimson eyes roamed up and down Van, and then each of his children in turn. Then she held out a hand like a queen expecting patronage.

"Striga," she said by way of introduction. Her eyes slid to the young man who appeared at his father's side a second later. "And you must be the one they call Mad. Papa sent me to be your..." she paused to put extra emphasis on the last word, her lips curling into a coy smile, "escort."

Randaril put himself between the incoming creature and Tiale instinctively. He also reached for his bow - it wasn't there - then his dagger - that also wasn't there - and he began to panic when the creature relaxed, turned, and trotted back toward its owner. He heard Tiale stiffen and no doubt she was staring just as he was. Randaril, however, managed to stifle his surprise by the time the apology was given. "Quite alright. We're both...just a little jumpy," he said. "I am Randaril Silvermark, Prince of Amaras on Shaor," he said, trying to think of anything other than the fact that he was talking to something that was not human, elf, dwarf, or any of the common races on Sentra.

Philippe could have warned me about...aliens, Randaril told Faroth.

The night blue said nothing but he felt the amusement from Faroth's mind.

"And this is Tiale," Randaril added quickly, gesturing to Tiale who kept looking around, looking for other non-human-like people. Her fear had been replaced with awe if anything. "She's a...extremely distant relation."

@Mystic

"Oh, no! One is enough for me!" Philippe grinned after giving a courtly bow and nod to Sabrilla. He chuckled. "Faroth doesn't seem keen on sharing - that and the whole 'nobility' thing puts a damper on things for me as I sorta gave up my crown....no, I am here with my brother and the candidate for Treval Dragonry, who just happens to also be my super-great something...well, she's the mother of the first King of Amaras where I am from..."

"I do not care." Shan did not look up, his green eyes still flitting over his data slate, claws flicking through sheet after sheet of numbers.

"Well, I'm at least going to oogle." Jaliath smirked as he pulled on his hat, running a hand across several of the oversized feathers, just to fluff them up.

"You do that. Don't forget to take photos for your wife. And don't steal anything." Shan drawled, still not looking up, tail flicking to the side.

"Piraattteee~" Jaliath's sing-song voice fired back down the hall as he sauntered out, off to find whatever mad sort of gathering had started to snowball in the main hall.

"You are not attempting human-based networking?" Desh loomed over Shan suddenly, almost unfolding from the wall behind where the man was lounging.

"I have no desire to do so. It is unnecessary, in any event."

"Your biological progenitor would likely be pleased if you participated." The golem-like entity clicked and whirred as they tilted their head.

"Don't you have an architect to go emote at?" Shan frowned slightly to himself.

"Retort indicates discomfort and defensive reaction."

"If I spend ten minutes or so in that room, will be leave me alone afterwards?" Shan growled under his breath, hand tightly gripping the slate.

"Affirmative." Desh buzzed at him.

"Fine, then I'll get it over with." Shan flicked his data into standby, then stood from his cushions to follow in Jaliath's direction. "But don't think I'm going to stop working. I have things to do."

"Of course you do." The golem beeped faintly, and followed as well, heavy footsteps behind.

In contrast to spotting Faust, realizing that Kutoth had gingerly made his way over was a welcome, welcome difference. His expression and mental signature alike softened when he focused on the murdon. Schroeder made himself admit: if Faust was here, he was meant to be. There was a certain measure of decorum and respect to Shy, as host of this gathering, that Schroeder had to adhere to.

"This is Kutoth, of the Refugium," he answered for the other's benefit, not because the old murdon was any responsibility of his own, but because there was one here he respected and one he did not. This was a fact emphasized when he added, "Kutoth, I would remark that Faust here is a man aptly named. I would not recommend striking any deals with him, if they can be avoided."

Down at the levels of their waistlines (or knees, in Kutoth's case), Xiao Shy was for one blithely unbothered by the emotional atmosphere. He simply finished his little cake and produced a replacement from some mystery storage in his voluminous sleeves. He was an aspect of gluttony, after all. He would never dare be caught without food or drink.

To finish the round of introductions, strained though they might be, Schroeder indicated the snacking little man.

"This is Xiao Shy, answering Shy's invitation for persons of lineage."

Xiao Shy chucked, considering Kutoth first and Faust secondly, green eyes intent on the dark goggles that barred true eye contact.

"I am made by him in his image. What else could qualify more?" he smiled around the cake held to his lips.

Van stifled a smirk, then stopped stifling it when he could no longer. Mostly because Dreikoth was doing the draconic version of guffawing...

"Well, 'they' call me Van, actually, King Van. The... Mad part is mostly behind me, these days." The King chuckled.

"He doesn't mean us," Devera said, picking up on this conversation quickly, and moving to intercept her addled brother. "We're only a little cranky," she smirked, but did keep looking between her brother and this 'Striga'. Muscling herself in front of him, she gave Vaeden a sisterly glare.

Vaeden blinked away whatever inner thoughts had been going through his brain, but shouldered Devera back to give himself some space. As he stepped forward, Van moved aside, after delicately taking Striga's offered hand and resisting the urge to kiss it. This was neither the time nor the place for such forward behavior. Maybe his son would catch on.

Probably not, but it was worth watching what he did next. That would be to intercept Striga's hand before she lowered it, and he did move right in for that far-too-forward (and... let's be real here, somewhat inexperienced) smooch. People in court did that, he'd seen it more on their visits to Nelband's court, rather than their own, but still!

Devera's eyes rolled so hard it was a wonder she didn't describe the inside of her skull.

Darasath finished her conversation with the Pigeon and turned her head to watch the stranger march towards her. She was a bit bemused at being approached by someone, having expected the various Nexus Leaders and their chosen candidates to mingle amongst themselves and generally overlook her, even if she technically was a Leader just like they were. The Clans of Nyracii were a bit odd in that they were led by dragons alone instead of bonded partners, and Clan Vecira hadn't bothered to interact much with the Nexus at large before everyone was cut off.

Still, she was a leader and she had no intention of ignoring anyone who approached her.

The way the person paused and stared up at her was very telling -- perhaps they'd never been this close to a strange dragon before? -- but the person clearly shoved past their fear in order to ask a question.

Darasath bobbed her head in greeting and replied, "And good day to you, Dietlinde Rosenheim, I am Darasath, one of the two leaders of Clan Vecira." She paused a moment to consider how best to answer the woman's question, then lifted a paw to wriggle it in mimicry of a human 'so-so' gesture. "You could consider me as such, yes. Shy took samples from various dragons of my Clan with our permission, including from myself and my sister Renoth, and used those samples to create the eggs currently on the sands. He's also allowed us to assist in watching over the eggs as they harden and grow."

Thayer's brow furrowed as he tried to work out the logistics of Tiale's relation to Philippe. He spared little more than a moment for the conundrum, as his mind circled back to something far more interesting. His eyes lit up with delight.

"Your brother, huh? That's great. Now we can leave them to entertain each other while we go have some fun."

"Thayer..."

"No, this is great, Bane," Thayer said over his shoulder. "You can compare notes on sighing in irritation and rolling your eyes."

Bane resisted the urge to roll his eyes. It was not easy. He glared instead.

Striga did not make any effort to hide the very amused smirk playing across her lips.

“A pleasure to make your acquaintances, your highnesses,” she said as the young man, the spitting image of his father in all things except comportment, caught up her hand and placed a light kiss on the back of it. She curled her fingers ever so slightly around his palm. “There is a party being set up down in the welcome center. Daddy would love for all of you to attend. Would you allow me to accompany you there?”

Her eyes slid to the girl again. A fiery thing. And clearly in possession of more sense than her brother. All three of them were just so delightful. She couldn’t choose who she wanted to focus her attention on most.

Sabrilla was not overwhelmed. She was perfectly in control of herself. She most certainly did not feel claustrophobic. An affliction which she'd never suffered before and absolutely did not develop a sudden awareness of when in the midst of so so many aliens from unknown worlds. The worst part, she admitted to herself, was how human they looked. How normal. She had expected dragons but also... what? Castles? Rolling landscapes? Home, but with more dragons. This steel and glass structure with its oddly perfect attendants and foreign dignitaries (some of which actually looked alien, which she couldn't decide was better or worse), did not fathom into her daydreams at all.

Sabrilla was no stranger to courtly affairs. She knew how to behave around strangers, and had made a passable attempt at manners for the few people Thayer had introduced her to. Yet now the blonde ayanrix was fully focused on this new person (Philippe was it?), and his foreboding statue of a bodyguard had barely moved or spoken since they arrived. Something about the man just felt off. Sabrilla refused to blame it on a childish fear of his size or the glossy black armour he wore. She was not one to be intimidated by his silent stares (which were admittedly focused on Thayer and not herself). All the same, she found herself edging away from him and away from Thayer's conversation. It didn't include her, and if she could just get through this event without causing a fuss, maybe she could find a few minutes to collect her thoughts.

The young Sudland noble was so intent on her internal thoughts that she didn't realize how far away she'd backed until she came up hard against another surface. Another moving, living surface. Sabrilla squeaked, spun around, and jumped back from the person she'd so rudely bumped into. A young woman dressed in finery like herself, but certainly better composed.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry," Sabrilla said quickly to Eeny. She backed up a few more steps, and once more came up against a barrier. Sabrilla squeaked again and flipped in the opposite direction to face Jaliath. "I'm sorry! Oh gods, I'm so sorry."

She could recover from this. This was not a disaster. Certainly not something to cry over. She would not cry. She absolutely refused to cry.

Philippe chuckled. "Yes...I've been trying to get him out and about but he's starting to take his new role a bit too seriously," Philippe nearly muttered to himself, eyebrows furrowed as he turned to look around the gathering. Now that he wasn't hyper-fixed on catching up to Thayer, he noticed that there was a dragon lounging about, and quite a few different races. In addition to noticing new arrivals, some he thought he knew and others not so much, he frowned. "Where did he go? They were right behind me..."

They are talking to someone, Faroth told his rider. I think your brother can handle it...

"Hmm..." was Philippe's only response then turned back to Thayer. "Um...speaking of missing people...where did that girl on your arm go?"

"No apologies required on my part, young lady." The smile Jaliath offers is soft, and genuine in a way no one would see cross his face when otherwise surrounded by politics. (I just mentally realized that depending on the lighting, and the fact that his skin has an iridescence to it, this is going to visually look like something out of a shoujo manga and that is TERRIFYING. o_o;;;) He tips his hat politely to her. "Are you quite all right? You seem a bit on edge."

---

And as that happens, Shan goes about passing through the background, silently looking for a corner he can lurk in, despite the oversized multi-armed golem trailing after him. The irritation has washed off his face into a blank deadpan (as opposed the literal faceless blank of Desh behind him) and he's more concerned with burying his face back in his work....but now this gathering has the original Shy, a tiny version of Shy....and a taller, lavender version of Shy. XD;;; Much as that last one has no inclination to be social at the moment. (I want to kick him, he doesn't want to play. ^^;;)

---

Also, links! XD;;; Shan, Jaliath, and Desh.

Eeny was quick to curtsy, all the people in the hall were some kind of royalty or nobles or leaders. Courtesy warranted a greeting and introduction. Putting on her best smile, she introduced herself to the young woman that had bumped into her, noticing they dressed similar. Some of the more exotic apparel in the room had caught her unaware. Extending her introductio to the man with the shiny skin and the big smile. His blue hair, frilly clothes and hat made her think of some of the more ambitious ladies at her parents' court. Eeny reslved to be polite but not too cordial with him.

"A party will be an excellent place to see our peers," Vaeden asserted to Striga, whose gaze he had yet to notice was straying to his sister and father with regularity. "We were wondering whether we were to be summoned." He straightened his collar, casually. He was clearly ready to follow this girl to the ends of the world.

"... Daddy?" Devera whispered quietly enough that perhaps only her father would hear. And to that end, Van gave a flickering smile to his eldest daughter, and then stepped up to round his son's shoulders firmly in his long hands.

"Yes, indeed, Shy's... influence is obviously as strong as mine is with our progeny," he stated more or less to Devera but also to make it clear that Striga was as important as they came, to both of his children. "So do lead on, we can speak while we're on the move, yes?"

Satisfied with this, Devera put the pamphlet she'd been holding back into its little display slot, but made note that she would want to return to it later - it had quite a bit of information on it.

Vaeden struck up his own discussion points of the history of Leespire, and asked pointed questions about this place - carefully avoiding asking embarrassing or too-personal questions of the girl herself, he knew enough about court politics not to do that.

@mystic, phe
Despite Schroeder's warning, Kutoth didn't want to stand on impropriety, so he reached one of his longer arms toward Faust, hand outstretched. Handshakes were an entirely human custom, but Kutoth had spent so much time around the species it was a near automatic reaction when in their company. His tail twitched, a subtle signature of worry.

"Director of the Refugium, although I fear we don't have quite the long history as many of Shy's guests today."

:: I thank-you kindly for the warning.:: The telepathic message sent cautiously to Dr. Schroeder. Kutoth's mind lingered a moment on Dr. Krum, milling somewhere in the crowds with her young charge. :: I fear I've made far too many deals with the metaphorical devil. I appreciate the opportunity to avoid getting entangled in any more of them.::

Xiao Shy's comment broke a little of Kutoth's worry and he laughed again, more sincerely this time.

"Very apt! Who indeed could be more fitting?" Kutoth straightened and cast a glance over his shoulder, but in this sea of humanoids it wasn't difficult to spot the nearly nine foot form of Janardan. "I've managed to convince my son to stand at this clutch."

He turned to Faust again, trying very deliberately not to search for surface thoughts. "Are you here with a possible candidate?"

----

@yakima

"Janardan," said Janardan, dipping his head a little in semblance of a formal bow. Once upon a time there were a myriad of titles to accompany his name, but now he was simply... "Director of the Refugium. I'd say being a bit jumpy is justified when something comes running at you with teeth bared."

"Good boy!" Greer piped.

Janardan curled his lip and resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He turned his attention back to the humanoids, gleaning worry and then awe from their surface emotions. Perhaps name dropping the Refugium was in vain in this instance. The word 'alien' blared between them and Janardan got the distinct impression they weren't used to seeing anyone so inhuman as himself. Janardan had forgotten what it was like to be viewed as 'other.'

"It's an interesting gathering of people here." So many minds from so many worlds. Expectant. Proud. "It feels like this clutch is important to everyone."

Dietlinde's heartbeat hammered, thundering rushing blood deafening her. She felt her face heat and a tumultuous cacophony of fear and awe she'd never felt in the presence of anything else before. She wasn't a stranger to dragons, but this felt... important. Ineffable.

"It's an honor to meet you, Darasath," Dietlinde nearly tripped over her tongue try to keep her voice steady. She'd hardly managed to take in all the information from that letter and what Krum and her mother described to her and the thought that this clutch was an amalgamation of genes had escaped her notice until this moment.

"Oh! Right, yes! Shy's a geneticist, right? My present for him is-" she looked over her shoulder, searching for Dr. Krum, but the woman had disappeared somewhere. "It's..." Dietlinde collected herself and turned back to the dragon. "Genetic samples from some of our projects."

@Phe and Bug

"You certainly are," Faust said to the miniature version of Shy. He'd seen these chibi forms before. Or at least their prototypes and some of the failures. He even had a different version that served as a sort of pet. It was about as intelligent as a cat and incapable of speech, but it could teleport like a flit and fit in his pocket. Plus he had a fondness for anything that made him feel tall.

His attention shifted back to the two scientists as he spotted a pale hand held down in his direction. Faust took the offered hand and turned a smile on Kutoth.

"A pleasure to meet you. Your history may not be long, but it has already gained quite a bit of attention."

Faust turned to Schroeder, the smile still in place.

"There, you see, Doctor Schroeder? That is how a proper introduction is done. There's no need for such animosity here. Especially with our history of cooperation." Without turning his attention away from Schroeder, he continued. "And to answer your question, my esteemed Director, no. I have no candidate. I live here. Shy is a dear, dear associate of mine."

---

@Yakima

Thayer glanced over his shoulder and made a noise of mild interest. Sabrilla had been attached to his shadow since he arrived at her home. He hasn't thought the girl capable of wandering off.

"She's over there," Bane said, nodding his head toward a small knot of people, through which Sabrilla's green dress could barely be seen.

"Huh. Looks like she's made some friends. Well in that case," Thayer said, turning back to Philippe, "it seems like our candidates don't need our attention anymore. Want to go exploring?"

---

@Dragonflight and Trix (and Starfyre if you want to get in on this!)

Sabrilla looked up to see a shining example of a gentleman, complete with sparkles of light dancing across his skin. Her anxiety over her missteps was momentarily forgotten as a blush crept into her cheeks.

“No, I’m- This is just- Sabrilla Alyssa Coranaet of House Coranaet,” she blurted out, dropping into a stilted curtsy. “And… Tris’Hath? Is… is that how I’m supposed to introduce myself now? Oh gods, I’m making a mess of everything. I just- We left in such a hurry that I didn’t have time to prepare and now we’re here and I don’t even know where my room is and Thayer- Ayanrix Thayer-” Sabrilla looked back in the direction she’d come from. She could see Bane standing a head taller than most of the people around him, but Thayer had disappeared from view. Though if Bane was still there, then Thayer couldn’t be far away, right? “He’s so used to all of this and he has friends here and I’m just… I apologize. I’m babbling. May I ask your names?”

@Shard

Striga led the three (very tasty) figures down to the entrance to the apartment buildings and out to the waiting tram. She made sure to engage with Vaeden on his topics of interest, making the right noises of engagement and excitement as he described his home.

The tram turned out to be little more than a sleek, silver cart with no visible driver at the helm. Just two open benches facing each other behind the sloped nose of the cart. Once they were all seated (Striga making sure to sit a little closer to Vaeden), she spoke a word of command and the tram whisked them away with scarcely a whisper from the engine.

On the trip over to the welcome center, Striga pointed out key buildings and intriguing views. Did she lean in a little too close to Vaeden while directing their attention? Perhaps. Did she sit just so, with one leg crossed over the other so the skirt of her dress allowed for a tantalizing view of exposed leg? Yes, but it was all perfectly innocent, of course.

The tram delivered them to the front doors of the welcome center, past the lounging dragons and the parked ships on the landing pad. It hummed to a stop before the glass front of the building, and Striga turned to her companions with a bright smile.

“We’re here. It looks like the party’s started without us. Shall we go mingle?”

"Oh heavens, we're doing 'proper' introductions, then?" Jaliath blatantly does the airquotes to go along with his comment, now confronted with one curtsy, and then another combined with names. But he looks amused, more than anything else, and goes from just that hat-tip to a proper courtly bow....with maybe a bit of extra 'swoosh' in there, while he can get away with it. "Officially, Jaliath Tirahj Zalinel, prince, of Kynn. Casually, Jaliath. Pirate." A momentary pause. "Now, far be it from me to say, but it sounds like you are unduly stressed, and need a moment to breathe. How crass of this 'Thayer' bloke to titter off somewhere else while you're distressed."

[Mentally, of course, all this fellow is seeing is two shorter-than-him variations of his daughters, so this anxiety and distress must be fixed!] (Parental instincts online, oh no. Eeny and Sabrilla might be getting unofficially adopted. XD;;;)

"You are not using a psionic expression to communicate."

"No." Shan continued scrolling through one of the charts visible on his slate, cross-referencing....something? Or cataloguing, perhaps.

"Then since you are also not speaking, you are still not participating."

"I said I would 'spend time in this room'. I'm doing that." Shan growled very faintly under his breath, nearly putting a fang through his own lip in a frown.

"That is not in the spirit of the agreement." Desh whirred at him, still faceless, expressionless, blank.

"No, it is in the wording. Fair game with your ilk, and you know it."

"Hrm."
