Kilandaian Dragon Redraws...

Post by Xalia »

Okay, so in holding up my end of the bargain with Dray and StarFyre...

I've started redrawing the Kilandaian Dragon images. And I started with my personal favorite, the Plains Dragon... And I need help... :P

First off, I need to learn not to fill the whole paper before I find room for all the dragon's appendages...but aside from that... XD

I have no idea how to fit in his wings without covering him up or shrinking him, printing him all shrunken and using my light box to trace him and add the wings straight up in the air...which really doesn't appeal to me as a pose...

Also...is his head too small? And as you can see I'm still figuring out where to put his tail and it's all rough still from all my sketch lines and...yeah...

Feel free to red mark anything you see wrong or suggestions on where the wings can go or the tail or anything else...

And a ref to the old image so you know what I started with is here.

Oooh, Xalia! You've gotten better! :O Kudos for actually doing the re-draw!

Here's a solution I would never have thought of if not for NeoGeen, but it's so simple it's ingenious: Tape another piece of paper to the edge of the paper where you're going off of it, and keep drawing! It won't matter once it's scanned in! :D

I don't think the head is too big at all, either, as long as you're going for a very solid-looking creature. I think the proportions work, except that maybe you should consider moving the hind legs further back on the body -- giving him a bit more torso in between limb sets.

**claps** That looks really great! I love it!

I have that same problem, Xalia! My wings are always smooshed because of it. JKat's solution has worked for me a couple times, though- so I would definitely try that out. It seems to come out looking nicer than when you try to shrink everything down so that it will fit. Or it does for me anyway. Plus, the sketch you have is looking pretty good, I think you should keep going with it.

Dayumn, one day and I had already forgot to poke you guys! Meep! You look like you're doing amazingly though already, so I have faith that this is going to continue to be a good thing. I will try to poke you today, at least!

I agree with JKat about making his torso longer, as quadrupeds tend to have longer rib cages (or at least, they're set up differently from us humans!) so they should have more room to breathe, literally! If you're going to do that, you may want to size the head up a little bit, as I have a feeling that once you make the body look bigger, what with more torso, the head size is going to feel too small. These guys look hefty and badass, and I'm so pleased to see how far you've come since the first image you drew. :D Before you finish the wings, I would google some bat wings just to have a fresh mental image of how the wing tines and the sails between 'em work. The first image has some issues where the knuckles meet the wrist (and just in how the webbing seems to attach up there) so having a fresh perspective will allow you to avoid making similar mistakes!

Oh! The ears might be too close to the eye for this guy; I'm not sure if they're supposed to be more like... horse ears, or dog ears, or something else, but horses ears seem to be more up to the top of the head and a touch back; dog ears seem to be more back on the head and a touch upwards towards the top. You could probably nudge that after you've scanned it in, though, so I wouldn't worry about it too much!

(I'm excited for these guys!)

You know, it seems like a good idea to make a 'I drew THIS today' thread.

Okay, here's the (much shrunken) new version...I traced him onto huge paper (which may or may not ink well...hrm....), lengthened his torso, made his head bigger, finished the cut off foot, and added wings and tail. :)

What else do I need to do with him or can I attempt to ink? >.>

I feel like with the wings in there's something missing for the musculature of the back/side of the thigh...any suggestions?

Oh lord I always feel pretentious attempting something like this. Everyone has their own style, take anything I indicate with several grains of salt! XD

For example you seem to have the Plains geared as a bulkier species and I've more streamlined it out, here.... I also prefer small heads. Again, sleeker creature. :B

AND OF COURSE I POST RIGHT WHEN YOU UPDATE THE IMAGE oh man what timing XD

Oh, thank you for red-lining Phe! :D While I like my more muscley look, that really helps me see what was wrong with that back leg...because I didn't change that in the updated image and it was bothering me...

Definitely going to take out the kneecap (bad, bad habit of mind and it always looks silly, but I just can't figure out how to draw a knee without a cap... XD ) and rotate the toes though! Thanks for pointing that out! :D

I need to try to figure out what I did wrong with the head though because I like what you did to the head much better than what I did... I could not for the life of me make that head bigger and make it look the same... :P

Eyes viewed from the size often look like triangles with a rounded edge where the lense is, which is part of what Phe did. I hadn't put together ears == being attached to the jaw line, but that totally makes sense. The kneecap thing is awesome, too! XD I'm learning things!

So, apparently being home sick from work is good for my artistic side... :P I don't know what I'm going to do next week when I'm working all the time... XD

Next step: Plains Dragon Kit

Still very rough and a very quick sketch but comments and suggestions?

The wing is awkward...I need to go through my bat wing refs and find something to help me there...
