A 100 year old movie...

Post by Yakima »

My mom sent me this in an e-mail and I thought I'd share because it's very interesting to see the differences of today and 104 years ago.

I think it's San Fransisco (don't quote me, though >.<). Someone strapped a camera onto a cable car thing and filmed all the way down the street. It's funny watching the cars because there is no way one can do that these days. lol

Thank goodness for traffic laws ... o.o Seriously, I can't imagine how there weren't a dozen accidents while they were filming :D

And didn't they have electric wires on the trolleys? I didn't see any but then that might have been the grain of the film. Kinda odd, I didn't think they had any other form of propulsion?

Every cable car is pulled along it's hilly track by an underground cable. The cable is gripped with a vise-like mechanism that is operated via the grip lever in the front of the car
Taken from http://www.sfcablecar.com/gripmans.html

So yes, run by cables, but actually pulled along by underground cables, not running on overheads.

Aha, that's awesome! I'm so used to seeing overheads, that's what they did here in san diego. Of course, our trolley system is ass.

I think the undergrounds make so much more sense -- less to tangle up and get in the way, y'know?

LOL I watched the 2005 version of this (someone filed the same street in 2005) and I saw the mess of the above cables. Very confusing. lol
