Aion Online
So I know some people here do play MMOs, and I was just curious if anyone was thinking about picking up Aion? My fiance and I have it on preorder and are messing around in the open beta that's going on.
EW champions.
traitor.
I have seen a little bit of aion, it looks nice, but for my part I can only afford COH right now, so I won't be buying into it.

Champions is done by the guys who ditched COH because they were working on Marvel Online - which was dumped by Microsoft because they were told it wouldn't reach "world of warcraft numbers" ... durrr, because wow's numbers are the aberation in the gaming world, not the standard.
Cryptic then allowed NC to buy the IP and such for COH, that was going on 2 years now (jeez time flies). In that time, NC tripled the city of heroes staff, got them a new huge office, and has been pouring money into the project.
Cryptic.... I dunno, the only people I know are working on it are Jack who tried desperately to kill City of heroes with his "vision' (most of which appears in CO) and some guy from another utter failure, yes he came from blizzard (I think that's the guy) but... not in a good way.
CO is ... bright, but then again COH will be getting the long-awaited power customization that CO has said they've got lol.
If CO had used the full property, and made use of the actual Champions game system it would have interested me, but as it is, it's pretty much the bastard grandchild of the bitter ex-husband of City of Heroes.
hehe. I'm sure it'll be fun to play, it's just really, really not for me. I've invested 5 years of my life and plenty of money in City of Heroes, so...

Wow, Heroes has been around that long? Geezus. I knew it was old, but I never realized it was that long lived of a game. Also didn't realize exactly what sort of history Champions had behind it in terms of game devs working on it, doesn't sound like a winning combination there.
And I never realized exactly how many people subscribe to WoW. 11.5 million approximately? Compared to the something over 300,000 that EVE has, that's a huge gap. ... No wonder Blizzard's been messing with the people who love/want StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 to come out... have you heard? No LAN play is officially supported in those games. That, and the way they chose to release SC2... -.-;; grawr

Haha, alright, I consider myself enlightened. Still I'm enjoying Champions very much. It's had and is having some awkward baby MMO steps, but I find it great fun. I played WoW for a while but did not enjoy the grind or class limitation. Champions is classless and I have yet to encounter any boring grinding. Fights play out more like a fighter game and I find them more entertaining than battling in WoW was. All told, it appeals to and fits me as an MMO much better than others I've tried (WoW and CoX). I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, but goodness, no need to call me a traitor right off the bat.

*laughs* Eh, Aion might not be your cup of tea either -- it's a classed system like WoW, though so far I'm finding Aion more fun than WoW (though the lag is making me cry =P But that's why it's in beta.. server stress test for teh win).
Though, I think what's making me like it at the moment is that it's a completely different pacing than EVE is. With Aion, I can sit down for half an hour and walk away feeling like I've done something. Half an hour into an EVE login-session, and MAYBE I've finally got a ship fitted up and ready to go (given the situation of having nothing on hand) or (given the situation of having ships on hand and ready to go) I've maybe spent that half hour trying to hunt people down or looking for wormholes or sites to run, and probably come up empty handed. That, and EVE has such a huge learning curve, whereas Aion/WoW/etc is literally exactly like any other rpg I've ever played in my life.
Joe and I picked up Aion instead of WoW mainly because the low-level instances in WoW are (or were, I think they were fixed a few days ago) borked because all server-time was being prioritized to the brand new high-level instances. So there was no way to do dungeons at low levels.
<.< And, when it eventually comes out, we also plan to pick up the Bioware StarWars MMO for a bit to see how it is. ... Suddenly having disposable income (after school fees, basic cost of living, and tossing some into savings) is actually kinda cool 0.o;; if a bit startling. "We... we can actually afford that? ... Really? ... ye gods, we can.."

Hehehe, must be nice!
And where was it, maybe even on the CoH forums, there's a thread "did you ever think Star Wars would have three live mmos?"
I've heard that Champions post 30 is nothing but grind, since apparently they have no content at that point, but it's been live for what 5 days?
I expect they'll do something. Some folks seem to have gotten really lucky and not gimped themselves, but there are apparently plenty who did, who complained the most when the dramatic changes went live right off the bat. I can't blame them, really, since most of those folks had been in beta and didn't really see that coming that I know of.
I want an Elfquest mmo. I have a 25 page pitch for it.
I want a Harry potter mmo. I have an outline pitch for that lol.
I'd LOVE a Zekira mmo, but I suspect that'd devolve into "huh huh huh, you're my slave huh huh let's breed".

A bunch of my WoW guildmates are probably going to go check out Aion when it comes out. It generally shows promise. But idk, after having multi-player content shoved down my throat in WoW (have to group with people for everything *whine*), I am not at all eager to find myself another MMO, especially a baby one with no established raiding content.
It'll be interesting to see how it stacks up. I'd like to see one MMO stand up to WoW someday. :P Maybe then we'd get rid of the "omg this game sucks but I still play it only to whine about it" crowd.

Pffff, that will NEVER happen. I think there's a certain requirement that every single game ever produced has at least a 1% population whine.

City of heroes accounts, unless they're banned as spammers, are *never, ever* deleted. The worst that can happen is a name may be freed up after 3 months of inactive non payment, and that's something that actually happens very, very rarely because the devs have to turn that feature ON to have it work. they generally warn people in an email about it, before they do, too. Plus, it's "characters under level 6" anyway, so you're safe.
Whether the character's PLAYABLE after so long, lol, that's the question

Oh, yeah! I had her at level 28 or 30 or something...or low 20's. Can't remember. I just found it hard to play her unless I was in a group 'cause she was a defender and sucked by herself. XD

So, last night, this laptop (my art machine) decided that it didn't want to play EVE, a very disturbing change from the previous ability (albeit limited) to do so in fullscreen (since Win7 was installed) or windowed mode (with Vista installed... I've always had problems making this poor art machine play games). I was already incapable of playing Aion on here (Aion would make this laptop scream for mercy.. I already had to play EVE on lowest possible settings, and Aion makes that look positively primitive), but this really took the cake.
No EVE on this laptop means that, any time I want to do _anything_ with Joe, I have to sit down at the desktop at home, which Dave might need (his laptop is dying) or Kieran might need (he HAS no laptop beyond a Eee anymore, after his HP heat-deathed).
Soooo.. happy early birthday to meeeee -- Joe and I went out last night and bought a shiny new Asus gaming machine. $1000 worth of laptop, and easily the new master of the house (because the desktop hasn't been upgraded in three years). Drooool..
It's like, double the size, and probably triple the weight of my X61 Tablet, so there's no way in hell that machine is going to be carried around on a regular basis, but ohgods is it sexy. *gamer drool*
Now, to actually have time to USE it...
