Best. Day. EVAR!

Post by StarFyre »

Minor warning: Starfyre is hyper, excited, and twitchy, so the following may not make extreme amounts of sense.

So, this morning started out innocently enough, but then I checked my email and find that one of my professors this semester (I'm taking his class on mobile and wireless computing -- basically, the science behind how I can do what I'm doing right now, communicate with the internet without being plugged into a hardline) had emailed me saying, in a nutshell, "Hey, this undergrad research gig cropped up unexpectedly, would you like to fill it? It's on what we're doing in the class you're taking with me, and as a plus it pays around $800 a month."

So my immediate response is, "YESPLZ!" (a little more coherent than that, but you get the idea =P ).

He emails me back, "Have you taken these two classes? And if so, what where you grades in them?"

Now I start agonizing -- one of the classes he asked about I technically failed (a D in it) last semester, and I've already had a twitchfest over that because the Computer Security class I wanted to take (basically a continuation of the cryptography class I took in the Spring and OCDed over) had a prereq of a C in that other class. I got a waiver to get into the Securities class because THAT professor was like, "Well, you got an A in the crypto class, so I'll let you in."

So the Securities class goes by in agonizing slowness, because the professor I need to talk to told me to come by his office at 2:30, a half hour after the Securities class ends. And I'm trying to remind myself that the worst thing that can happen is that he tells me no.

One half hour of utter TWITCHFEST later...

Barring the paperwork, I have the position. Ohgods. And the project is actually something fascinating, involving setting up a so-called "ad-hoc network" where machines are talking to one another directly, instead of through a router. My job is to get this adhoc network to work. I have a semester, the professor isn't expecting miracles (as he told me himself, we're basically going to be exploring this concept together, because he hasn't done a practical application of this before, only the theoretics behind it), and OHGODS BESTDAYEVAR~

This means that, if I can impress this professor, I have that much better of a chance at getting into grad school here, which is what I want, and it's something that I'm fascinated with, and I really respect this professor, and I never expected this in the slightest when I came to school this semester and everything just seems to be going my way this time around!

ohgods.. excuse me while I go spaz and scare the living beejeesus out of my roomies by hugging them at random! WEEEEEEEE~
