There is, in fact, a story behind this.
The mother of the litter of cat-dragon-lets is the pet of a US Special Forces team living on an alternate Earth. On this particular Earth, there are various mad scientist-type people who mess with genetics.
She's a genetic mix of lion, some kind of long-haired cat, western-type dragon, and bird. They're pet-creatures, about the size of your average housecat (with maybe one or two exceptions, due to the dragon DNA.)
They're a new species on Earth, Felix Kyra Draconis (Kyra being the 'mother' of the kittens.) Many of them show an uncanny talent for wreaking havoc, and act more like puppies than cats. However, they aren't much smarter than a normal housecat.
The Kyra-dragons, as normal people call them, are live-born. They only have one stage. The short fur on the body is usually a normal cat color (brown, gray, calico), and the wings and longer fur is a different color (green, blue, red.) They can be named anything, seeing as they're pets..some, however, won't respond to a name they think is beneath them.
Anyway, there's an infinite number of kittens, although only one per person at a time to cut down on the amount of coloring that needs to be done.
