Really excited

Post by Cy »

As some of you know, I've been working. A lot. I go to school 30 hours a week, and usually work 30-40 hours a week if not more. So dragoning has taken a back seat.

However, working in a petstore has it's perks. Cheap rats for Sprocket Rocket, toys for my other pets, and conversation starters.

This has a point!

Today, a boy in my class at school told me he's trying to get rid of his snake. He got a Red Tailed Boa when it was a baby, and wasn't aware of how big it was going to get. It's currently 4 feet long, living in a 20 gallon tank, and he says he just can't keep it anymore, especially since he knows now it's going to reach 7 feet or more. He asked me if the store was willing to take it. Well, we usually don't take other people's animals and sell them for them, simply because there is usually a lack of profit.

I asked him what all came with the snake, and he said everything. Tank, pads, decoration, stand, etc. I asked how much he wanted for the whole thing, keeping it in mind in the back of my head that redtails that size typically sell between $400-$500, especially if they're tamed the way his is.

He told me he only wants $60 for the whole thing. I nearly choked on my drink. I quickly told him I'd take the snake. I said I'd get paid on Friday, and I'd come over Saturday after work to pick it up. He said he'd give me directions on Friday. I was really excited.

But when I told my mom about it, she got angry. I still live with her. She hates Sprocket Rocket, my ball. She claims I have no room for another snake. Really she means she doesn't want another snake around.

So I told I'd give it to Tim, my boyfriend, for Christmas. Because he has been wanting a snake. He doesn't know yet of course =] So she agreed, and the snake is coming home with me Saturday, and will be given to Tim at Christmas. So I get to enjoy him until then.

Ignoring the details of this post, the main point was "New snake addition, major deal, thrillage"

=]

In other news, I got my hair dreaded =]

Thanks you two =] I'm really looking forward to it. And since Tim will be living with my best friend, and I'm over there all the time anyways, I will get to see him often. I'm really hoping to get a bigger tank for him soon, since as proven in our store, snakes usually grow to their surroundings. We have a reticulated python, the ones that grow to 30 feet? We've had her for about nine months and she's still only two feet long because of the small tank we keep her in.

Gwahhhh.... that's so exciting! I hope your boyfriend and the snake get along all right. ^^

Even though I keep telling myself it's not always a good idea to keep reptiles... I still have this dream of a sunroom with a pond, edible plants, and plenty of light.... temp controlled because I live up north... =D... Something for "when" I win the lottery. I'll adopt iguanas, the ones that are already 4+ feet long. x3 <333

Working at a pet store would be awesome too. The one closest to my house once got this shipment of Russian box turtles. There were so many and I remember the one gal that works there was caring for each individual so carefully, cleaning them up, making sure they were healthy... that just sounds like something I'd want to do. >>

</ramble> I shall shut up now. XD

Yesyes another one! My boyfriend and I are huge animal lovers. As long as we have the room and the money, we will probably keep expanding our pack =] We want a snake room similar to your idea for a room, Neishai =]

Working at a pet store is hard work. I'm constantly bruised up from climbing in and out of the larger kennels and show cages, and I'm always scratched up from puppy teeth, kitten claws, and ferret play. I smell like animals all the time, and I'm constantly tired, and I have permanently pruned hands from being elbow deep in groomings, kennel cleanings, and dirty fishtanks. But I wouldn't trade the job for anything =] We take good care of all our animals, and there isn't a single one in the store that isn't friendly. Even our spiders are used to being handled.

Why a snake 'room' and not a pit? You know, the kind you keep in store for intruders?

Because I don't find it as humorous as some people do to watch someone open a door looking for the bathroom to fall into a pit of snakes =] Plus it's rather difficult getting in and out of one to play with them.

No, it'd be more humorous for someone to be looking for the bathroom, stumble into the gorgeous snake room, start looking at the beautiful scenery, and then turn white when you off handedly mention to watch out for the 30 foot python and his smaller friends
=]

I get Snakes in a Shirt a lot at work because of the baggy shirt I have to wear as uniform. Then people jump in surprise when a snake sticks it head out of my collar or sleeve.

Oooh, you're gonna have to post up some pictures of that one as well! Congrats on the great find! Snakes are so misunderstood, it's depressing. It's good to see someone so devoted to them. X3 <3

I like the idea of having someone looking for a bathroom, falling in a pit with realistic toy snakes, recorded hissing and rattle noises, and maybe a cotton candy type machine swirling under the toys so it looks like they're slithering around. >3

A snake room would be killer. I don't know if snakes and iggy's get along though, or I'd say I'd want them both... >> As much as I like both, I wouldn't want one to hurt the other. Even feeding rats/mice to snakes sometimes bothers me because of the rodents for pets factor. Yes... I almost took the class rat home with me once, too... not just the science department's albino boa... ^^;

I guess that's what the Rat Room on the other side of the house would be for. ;) Totally covered in concrete partway up, then waterproofed, then covered in high-traffic carpet, then totally furnished for ferrets, or rats, or whatever I might have at the time. ^^

I would love your job, seriously Cy. I love ferrets (when people keep them clean anyway), reptiles, fish, cats, dogs, birds... I'll just stand there and pick out the shy bird and talk to it for 5, 10 minutes. Ask Mooger about the time we went to Petco and we were supposed to get some spray for my pom... and I found a bird... =D They spent almost as much time trying to pull me away from the cage as I spent talking with the bird. ^^ (Twas very shy and antisocial, easily scared... and it almost came up to me. :D )

We're not supposed to mess around with the animals, because according to Stacy, the owner, "there is always something to do." Luckily, she is only there Monday-Friday. So on weekends, we have lots of fun =] There is one ferret in our store that I adore. I taught him to jump up into your hand when you say "come here" and I taught him to give kisses on command. Just tell him to give you kisses, and he'll lick whatever body part you present =]

I do bad things too though. I taught the store parrot [Joe] to say "No, go away" when people talk to him, as well as to say "Joe is a douche" because he bit me once XD I'm horrible. Joe is kinda cool though. He'll have complete conversations with himself.

Everyone in our store was picked to work there for certain reasons. Perri works there because she's an expert on fish, and she knows a lot about all kinds of dogs. Max knows everything and then some about reptiles, minus snakes. I work there because I know a crapload about snakes, cats, dogs and ferrets. Shaun works there because he's a dog expert. Dawn, who recently got fired, was another reptile expert, though hers included snakes too.

Usually, we're all working at the same time, so there is always one of us that can help someone =] We have lots of fun together, and we all work well together. Max and I, as the youngest two, make cracks at each other all day, which causes Perri and Shaun to laugh. Shaun is the negative one, and Perri is the country girl.

Sometimes I think the store would be better without Stacy =] But I'll never say that outloud XD

Oh, pretty snakes, even if I'm someone who would rather see them behind glass no matter how 'tame' they are. :P Still, I think snakes are cool and I know how to catch little, non-venemous ones if I have to. My mom was always catching snakes when she was little. She lived in New York - has had one bite her pinky and anouther get loose in the house when she put it somewhere and was going to come back for it. Yeah, grandma wasn't too happy about that. heh.

Oh holy crap those are two beautiful snakes!!!

Puppy certainly is ... LARGE. :) is that a confirmed male? And like.... where do you live again? lol! I've been thinking of breeding Carmine and he's just gorgeous. Do you think two snakes can maintain a long distance relationship? :D

;_; I just wish there was a snake breed that ate bugs, so I don't feel guilty about mice/rat feeding if I could own one eventually... {loves on the pretty snakes of yours though}

Thank you all =D

And Fuzzbutt, buy some quails, treat them like chickens so that lay a lot of eggs, and then buy an egg eating snake =3

You shouldn't feel guilty about feeding them mice or rats. Trust me. My boyfriend has a pet rat, and still helps me feed our snakes.

There is a huge and noticeable difference between pet rats and mice and feeder rats and mice.

Feeder rodents are mass bred and also inbred. They're insanely stupid, incredibly bitey, and generally pointless. It would take years to turn one into a pet, if it was even possible. Trust me. Working in a pet store where we sell both pet rodents and feeder rodents... The pets are pretty calm. They can get nippy, but with a little handling, they get cuddly really fast. They're also generally healthier looking. The feeders however, as soon as you stick your hand in the tank swarm it trying to nip it off. You can't pick them up for crap unless you pick them up by the tail. They're dull colored, and kinda... well... brainless. They're healthy for the snake, of course... but they're like the mentally retarded of the rodent world =]

Some people still have problems seperating 'food' from 'pet' in their head. It's understandable =]

I'm hoping to get better pictures of Absinthe soon. She's pretty snotty and bitey. And very fast. So I haven't handled her much yet.

^__^;;; Should'a fed one of my dwarf hamsters to your snake. I got her at a pet shop and smuggled her into the house, but she turned into such a farking bitch I couldn't even feed or clean her cage without her biting and latching onto my hand no matter how hard I shook the whole arm. XD

On the other hand, thank the gods I'm no shepherd- I'd probably starve for not wanting to eat what used to be a 'pet' XD

... o_O Geez. Let's just feed 'em stupid people. X33 Shame we can't. ^^*

*goes off in search of egg-eatin' snakies! though he's gonna be broke trying to move out for the next few years* X3
