Take one down, pass it around...

Post by Shard »

Recently I bought a 2nd copy of Paint Shop Pro 8 online, because I couldn't find my original disk. (Knowing that I'd eventually find it of course.) It was cheap, about 40 bucks including shipping and handling, which is half what I paid for the original.

So now I have 2. I found my original. What I'd like to propose is a much more advanced form of 'file sharing' ... Since the company isn't supporting the product any more (heck, it's not even owned by the same people any more :( ) there will be no legal fallout here.

I propose that I send it to someone who needs it, and they send it to someone else, and so on. If you don't have PSP it's really nice. If you're used to Photoshop maybe you want to give it a spin. If you don't have a paint program as advanced as it, or a prior version, it's really most likely the nicest version of PSP. (I didn't get the chance to try 9 and I wasn't going to to out on a limb and try X knowing that it's not JASC and therefore: sucks.)

So, who's interested? This *will* involve private exchanges of addresses, and some amount of postage $. I'd definitely be willing to send it on its merry way if I know that it'll be in good hands, after hands, after hands... :) Interested, post. :)

I think I have that program! I paid extra to have it preinstalled on my computer or something. It's ... okay, but I eventually went back to photoshop because yes, tis true, I found the interface to be a LOT easier to work with. Frightening, I know. But I also thought my graphics just looked better with it. But PSP 8 is a pretty nifty program for those of you who want it, and I often use the sunburst feature because it's more splodey than Photoshop's Lens Flare :-p

Yeah you can just install it in another directory.

Yeah I know, but i couldn't figure out how to do really basic stuff, like change the opacity of the brush ... which is like, STAPLE, to my shading technique. Maybe it's something really obvious and I'm just being blonde

It's in the toolbar :) I always have my tool options open - but that *is* something you have to click on to do and save your settings that way. And - psp 8 is different from prior versions, the workarea is different but I like it more than the others I've owned.

Anyway - I have one taker, do we have another? :)

Nope - this is technically speaking Abandonware. Neither JASC nor Adobe are supporting the product line any longer in this guise. It is only available aftermarket like ebay (where I got it).

If I were *making copies* and *selling them* that would be pirating the disk. I'm not doing that at all - I'm lending the disk to people. :)

What they do with said disk while it's in their hands is *noooone of my business*! :D

The technicality lies in the fact that it's not the making of the copies, nor is it the selling for profit. You can distribute it freely, just don't get caught. That's where they'll tag ya.

And I wasn't saying that they were pirated copies, I'm saying the it is much easier to take your vitamins.

Look - I'm offering something nice for the people here.

Please don't take this the wrong way but I don't feel like arguing with you on it. If you don't want a perfectly legal *shared copy* of something, don't ask for it. Please don't rile me on this one.

Hmm... it's tempting. I have PSP7 on this comp and PS:CS on the other. CS is bloody difficult to learn and I only know enough of PSP7 to get me a bare bones finish on my pics. What's 8 like?

Hmmz, I only use it for the crappy burn-dodge effects I do. *cries inside*

But from what I have seen other people do with it, the effects can look darn lifelike and amazing! Otherwise, it's pretty similar to photoshop 7 in terms of where things are, but what the tools do is another story. I'd recommend a manual or a good sit down with the help option.. and a whole lot of patience.

Oh.. and a tablet. The smudge/blur tool works AWESOMELY with a tablet. It's just way cooler then Photoshop +tablet. *worships*

lol - yeah 8 *is* where I learned to use that feature of dodge/burn and push. :) You can load presets and brushes, but I don't know if it can share PS ones.

8 is very slightly different than 7 in terms of where stuff is at the start but once all the toolbars are where you put them, it's so easy to get used to. For me, it's very intuitive about how to use each of the items. Knowing some folks already are using PS though, that'd take some getting used to. If anything, having both will ensure that if someone wants to share a nifty trick, you'd be able to try it out in both programs.

But anyway - it's there. :) Cost of shipping. What I thought of is to enclose an envelope with it, it's in a DVD case sized thing which can go in a padded envelope. Next person buys a new envelope and sticks future person's addy on it. :)
