Mhara Varrey

Post by Shiolar »

I was thinking a couple of days ago that there simply aren't enough aquatic dragons out there. Admittedly, there's not a lot of demand for them, but still... It got me thinking, and it resulted in these, the Mhara Varrey.

They're actually quite heavily based on dolphins... kinda halfway between a dolphin and a dragon, I think. I'm thinking I might do different types based on different dolphin species, just coz the good old Bottlenose, while very nice, is a bit boring in terms of colour-schemes. There's only so much you can do with grey, you know?

So yeah, obviously the Mhara Varrey are mammalian dragons, air-breathing and giving birth to live calves (maybe no more than two or three at a time). Although they're air-breathing, they can't come up onto land. But with the right magic, I figure they can probably swim through the air instead (good for flights, I should think.)

Now, I reckon that if I say I want to run a giveaway of these things, there'll be no end of people wanting them. Everybody loves free dragons, after all. But I'm rather thinking I might like to run an agency for giving these out. So, realistically speaking, if I ran an agency for adopting these out, somehow, who would be interested in them?

I haven't decided yet if they bond or not. I'd like to see what interest there is before I get too into developing them and drawing more sets of images and so on; I was considering having a separate template for each type, just because a lot of them would have different builds, different faces, fins, and so on...

So, with all that duly said, these are the first template I've done. An adult and a calf of the Tursio type of Mhara Varrey:

I love aquatic dragons, and yes, there are a huge shortage of them.

So, I'd definitely grab some up if you did an agency. :D

Glad everybody likes... They are a lot of fun to draw. Actually, I was drawing dolphins years before I learned how to draw dragons, so they're also quite easy, and I'm better with various angles and poses... I'll have to see if I can find my book with illustrations of all the various species...

zomg, they're doooooolphins! Hee hee I love them. Not sure how happy they would be living on a space station though, unfortunately... If they would be able to swim through air and not live in an outside aquatic environment then I would definitely be interested in adopting some, but I'm not sure how well they'd work into my world otherwise. Maybe they could with cybernetic or magical enhancements be able to swim in space. That would be cooooool.

They probably wouldn't like it... they sorta need water, after all...

I think they're bloody adorable. ;-; -grabbies at them- not too much demand for aquatic things in mindspace, though I do have underwater worlds, but you'd get atleast one candidate from me.

Yeah I just really don't have a use for an underwater creature on my world unfortunately. Don't get me wrong I love them I just don't think that it would be practical to bring them onto a high tech world, nor would it be to create a whole new water-based world for them. Although Centurans are aquatic and they live in space just fine, but that's them :P So I wish I could have one but for plotting purposes I'll have to sit this one out :(

And the inked, scanned, cleaned, shaded, coloured Comerso (Commerson's Dolphin) type:

Adult:

Calf:

I'm actually quite liking how these are turning out, even if they do take a long time to do... They do manage with only five shading layers, though. Including a brand new layer just for the shiney bits on their eyes.

Coming soon:
Coeruleo type (Striped Dolphin)
Delphio type (Common Dolphin)
Acuto type (Atlantic White-sided Dolphin)
Maybe a couple others... I haven't completely decided yet.

I'm not so much of a fan of aquatic dragons, but this is a very nifty design, Shi'! ^_^ They remind me, vaguely, of of plesiosaurs as well as dolphins. The tail-fin on the adult is just awesome--that pose is too cool. :3

(And, hey! Grey can be pretty nice! Might get boring to colour after a while, but there's nothing wrong with your neutrals! XD)

Glad you like, Dray!
And yeah, they do sorta have a plesiosaur look to them, too. I do like grey, but doing all the Mhara Varrey in varying shades of grey would get a bit boring to colour...

I am finding myself liking them... It's rare that I draw something that I actually like myself...

Delphio type adult and calf:

I don't like the calf much... the pose doesn't work, so I'll probably redo at later.

Aw, I think the calf's really cute. But then, I think they're all cute.

I like those two--and I actually /really/ like the calf-image, Shi'! There's something playful about those curves, it seems to fit right, to me! :3 Great example images--I'm certain you'll get some of these out there!

I shall keep the calf as it is, then... since the people who like it currently outnumber the people that don't. Heh.

I'll get an actual agency up and running soon. I have part of the information sorted out in my mind, but I'll need to write it up. And I'll need to draw and colour more images, of course.

Oh, I really like that last one, Shiolar. The colors really make it stand out, like it's something special. (and yes, I know they're just dolphin colors, but they go well with your image, dangit XD )

My goodness, I adore these~ I have a cove on Alskyr... if they can be transported off-world (something could be arranged >3 )... and if you don't mind them sharing the waters with reptilian, fish, and amphibian types of aquatic dragons, they'd fit right in! ^^
