Wingless Dragons as Candidates?

Post by Astra »

Just another twisted example of how my mind works I guess...

I was musing about how it seems like a fad nowadays, or maybe I'm just noticing it more, that there are a lot of wingless dragons. I am just starting (or I guess reviving) my not-so-new sci-fi universe so that I have a place to put all these lovelies that don't really belong on Cyrna or Taires and I was setting up a page to use my runner dragon from Myrror as a candidate.

And then it occured to me that a lot of places require a potential bonder to be able to ride or fly with a dragon. Well, perhaps a wingless dragon could ride a dragon, if it was big enough, though it would be rather awkward to say the least. But suppose their bond was smaller than them, or the same size? And certainly the wingless dragon can't fly with a dragon, because of that tiny little detail of being wingless.

I know that the emphasis has shifted away from being able to ride dragons anyway lately, and bonding is more for companionship or even mating purposes, but still, there are places that insist that their dragons be used for riding.

Guess I have too much time on my hands if I think of random stuff like this.

That's why I allow anything sentient to bond a dragon at Darkling Dawn. The weirder, the better, IMO ^^
Darkling Dawn: Fauna Frenzy Open to candidates; flights open to males/females; rukel eggs/breedings available.
Drockh-Tallahn Castle: 3 eggs, 2 available. Females and males needed.
Sgiath Wolfkeep: 7 pups available
Sedona Weyr: 12 eggs, Deadline March 8. Chasers and a female needed.

It's still a tad wierd for me to comprehend, but hey, to each his own. ^^ The only thing that reallyb others me is the mechanics-- there's a lot of maintainence that requires opposable thumbs, and then there IS the riding issue. ._. dragon on top of dragon would be akward, what with balance and the whole staying-on-with-claws thing, but then. there are loopholes for every technicality. <3

For that the Warren has employed den keepers. They help the dragon/dragon or dragon/other pairings with the nit-picky little details that a humanoid rider would usually do. Changing the bed, checking for mites, brushing fur/oiling scales. They get paid well and many of them go on to become riders themselves.

X3 Avengaea likes foreign dragons coming in to bond. Asandae have opposable thumbs themselves, and they can do the little things that thumbs are needed for by the time they're ready to bond. What bonding Asandae need is someone to raise them and provide for them, more than anything, someone to teach them things and take them to live with them.

I have my wingless dragons eat a little chip that makes them fly when I send them out. Works very well, especially if they're large.

The Mirusii have been living without people with opposable thumbs to care for them for many generations... they know how to groom themselves and each other quite well.

Generally, I assume that most dragons, especially natural ones (unlike Pernese ones which were created), have evolved with the ability to take care of themselves and their offspring. Think how many species of animals there are that can survive very well without the use of opposable thumbs? And if they can do that, they can probably look after a bond or sponsor, too. *shrugs*

So, as long as a wingless dragon is capable of looking after another dragon, they're more than welcome at Mirus.

X3 I think that people are looking at it from too involved a stand point. 'Dragons riding dragons' is only something a human would think up... >_> Or another dragon in heat... *cough*

Like Shiolar said, if they could raise their own young, they could probably raise another kind of dragons', right? And if they're living around bipeds and thumb-users, like in Mystic's Warren, then hey, another option. XDD

I guess I just never saw why it was necessary for a dragon to be /ridden/. I mean... they're smarter then horses. XD They can be trained just like humans: example and spoken/whatever instruction...

Then agian, if someone was based in a Pernese Weyr, I can see where that mind-set would come from. XD Never mind, now I'm just rambling!
