I'm trying to redesign my website (my personal one, for art gallery-resume-game info type stuff, once I get a better name) but I can't decide on what sort of look or format it ought to have.
What sort of 'preferences' do you have when viewing a website with a 'theme'? Elegant colors or styles? Photos or background images? Some of the artists work along the side?
I guess I'm just looking for design input. I want it too look professional, but I also want it to feel like....me. A gamer and fantasy nut. That sort of thing. I'm also intending do to stuff in blues and darker colors since I favor those....but I'm still open to suggestions.
Any? I'd love examples too, and if I come up with anything I'll post them here for critique.

'Epic' is most concisely defined as something that, were you to do it in view of a person in real life, they'd pretty much have to sleep with you immediately to maintain order in the universe.
I sneezed. It seems to have reshaped reality. My bad.

Don't put pictures or artwork in the background-- if you want to display your work on the main page, use it for thumbnails. Putting a picture or pictures in the background is the worst thing you can do, in my mind, to make a site seem unprofessional. Make sure all the colors work together, make sure nothing catches the eye that isn't important-- like said thumbnails, or the title, rather than the background or borders or whatever.
The stupidest smart person you ever met.
Make it easy to navigate! That's the kiss of death, in my opinion, for making people want to look at a site... >.> If you can't find anything, then what's the point of looking through it? I've seen so many art/portfolio sites that look absolutely gorgeous... but the content's so hard to navigate through that I give up.
I guess that means having everything clearly labelled, so that you know for sure if something is actually a link, etc.
Other then that... it's up to you! XD You can always fiddle with it as your tastes change!

I'm fond of gallery pages which have a nice background (just a satiny or plain color that's not too bright) and tiny thumbnails of pieces. Frames, not I-frames.
A simple, easy to navigate site which has examples of your work by year (if you want to show that much) or by theme/type (black and white, color, mixed media, etc).

Personally, I like to try and make sites that will look relatively the same in as many browsers as possible - I'm a big fan of tables within tables within tables XD; I also much prefer dark text on a light background.. trying to read webpages with light text on a dark background hurts my eyes, and if I want to read what's where I have to copy-paste the whole shebang into Notepad.
